Someone made a mod that brought back the elephants of doom. I quite liked it, since it introduced me to the concept of missing limbs (I thought the paraplegic dwarf I had sitting in my entrance hall was merely badly bruised, and couldn't figure out why he kept falling unconscious). Sadly, the herds of 20+ elephants were hard on my FPS.

Just make it so they can't drag people under water from the shore, and I think it should otherwise be OK.
The main problem is the dwarven AI which forces them to charge the fish which is in water. There's no mechanism a fish can drag a dwarf into the water as far as I know.

Well they can attack the dwarves from in the water.  The dwarf then enters combat mode and charges the carp, dropping them in the river.

Y'know, I've had plenty of dwarves wrestle imps to death while the imps were one z-level below in a magma channel, and not once has the dwarf in question leapt in. I'm not saying the situations are identical, but they seem similar at first glance.

(This only happened in the first place because of a channeling mistake; normally imps never get anywhere close to my dwarves)

It has already been fixed in the version toady has.

Hmmm last time I checked carp still had the 1:6 bite tag...

Maybe it has something to do with the fact dwarves can learn to swim but magma will always kill them.

Fix all the fish except carp. The carp shall stay as a reminder of suffering. Or perhaps create two separate yet indistinguishable version. One is harmless, the other is "Genetically Different." A steroid amped monster of bloodied waters and scaled suffering. All shall suffer the wrath of the deep ones. Those who breath water must have their thirst slacked by other more potent fluids.

Just make it a megabeast.  BloodCarp.  They arrive in your river every once and awhile and destroy your floodgates and fisherdwarves.

Or we could keep the game semi-realistic and just fix the damned things.

Just a suggestion.
The only real problem is that it makes it near impossible to settle in warm areas. Its a huge pain and you lose a viable food source.

If We add more evil see creatures in the spirit of carp im okay, but in no way should i have to "guess" which carp are dangerous, Nor should i have to fear a river like the plague because of fish ripping my arms off. They don't even have teeth for god sakes.

Last I checked, I'm certain you had a different version than Toady.

yes i was under the impression that Toady fixed carp to much of my and others protest.

as far as i'm concerned, killer animals like carp and elephants should have been left alone as their appearance gave rise to very interesting and challenging situations.

Not only that but they made Dwarf Fortress special and are a serious part of the legend that is Dwarf Fortress. Boatmurdered anyone?

At least have it so that they can climb up or carp that won't drag them down but simply bite them when they're on the shore, perhaps wounding them but no drowning of UberLegendaries FisherUrist.

Its an easy fix to change the carp back, just un-change the raw.
