So true.

Then again, most single-player games have no incentive to delay gratification beyond simply increasing play time for a box advertisement. You don't have to keep paying for Civ4, for example.

So the grind is a direct result of the MMO business model. If you had an MMO where the cost was totally up-front, no monthly fee or other income from the player playing, then the game could just offer what is fun rather than what will keep you logged in.

Although I'm sure the current WoW/UO/FF11/EQ etc. model is the more profitable.

The only joy I find in Ultima anymore is in Roleplay servers. Khaeros, in particular, aside from the graphical interface it's almost not even the same game anymore, they;ve customized it so thuroughly. No dwarves though, I'm afraid, hee hee

You know, if you're going to bring back a thread that hasn't been posted in for well over two years, it's generally considered good form to at least acknowledge the fact that you're doing it, rather than just act as though it's business as usual.

Does it really matter? Can't a guy just post without the risk of someone jumping down his throat with an off-topic comment?

It just shows that the person is fully aware that the thread is somewhat old, and while recognizing that fact still feels that their dusting it off with a relevant, thought-out post is the best course of action and would benefit the thread and forum on the whole.

You know, to distinguish them from people who just randomly post in threads regardless of their livelihood, and also from those who actively seek out really old threads just to bump them up to the top for some bizarre thrill.

It's just etiquette.

But it was quite clear that this poster had none of those hidden agendas, and merely wanted to say something relevant and on-topic. Surely posting something in those categories negates the need to highlight it's an old thread?

I could understand it if they'd have posted something completely off topic, but their post was a valid point.

I just don't feel his posted needed the type of response you gave.

Well since he wanted to say something about Ultima Online i guess reviving a old thread about ultima online is better than making another one.

Heads up: Someone named katwithk is going to necro this thread yesterday.

Now the issue's been addressed, can we move on?

Anyone play IPY2 at all? I was thinking about starting again, but I can't think of a good dexxer build I'd like to use.

I could try and argue my own observation and interpretation as to the matter of agenda, but that really wouldn't get anyone anywhere except for furthering this derail.

As for my response, I specifically made a point of trying to be neutral and non-hostile, as I know a number of "This thread is old" reminder posts tend to be.  I was honestly trying to help and point out something that would make him seem a more conscientious poster and would stop most comments related to the age of the thread from even being published.

Apparently, I failed miserably.  My apologies to anyone who was offended by my manner.

You did, bud - but kudos for the apology.

On topic - I used to really be into playing on third-party RP servers, but after trying a few they all seemed to end up the same way - a dwindling active member-base, mostly based in the USA, and pretty empty servers with a stunted development.

Does anyone have any decent RP-only server recommendations that don't suffer from the above curses?

This is an ancient thread from so many years ago. But I didn't want to start a new thread for Ultima Online.

Here is my play through of my time playing.

http://forums.mmorpg.com/discussion/457075/my-experience-of-resubscribing-to-ultima-online-atlantica/p1

Once the month subscription is up, I'll give my thoughts on both there and here. And decide if I want to keep subbed or not.

So far though been really enjoying in UO. The game (on Atlantica) is still really active, and UO STILL gets updates. An expansion was even released at end of last year.

The community is really great too. A lot of MMO communities these days suck, are troll-like or just plain rude. Or in case of one MMO I tried, everyone seemed like they were faking being nice and in that game, the community was kinda creepy in how they talked. In UO, everyone I've personally talked to or met has been genuinely nice. It feels like when an MMO is small and tight-knit community, but UO its more moderately populated.

There is also a TON to do. There is so much content, that at first it was pretty overwhelming. With many years of content, guess to be expected lol. But it is easier to skill up than it used to be, and some things seem a bit modernized.

Overall really like my time playing UO, not many complaints and its a nice change of pace from other MMOs. Only other MMO I actually like at all is EVE Online. But UO is great so far as well, and it might be the 2nd MMO I play (alongside EVE)

Woah! I had almost completely forgotten about UO. I never played it myself, but a family member was obsessed with it at one point so I saw a lot of it (this must have been about 2001!).

I had heard great things, however there was another MMO I played a while ago (I really can't remember what it was called) and I felt like I was joining about 10 years too late - everyone knew everything, everyone had everything, and I basically felt like I was just messing about whilst everyone else had already done it all. I didn't really enjoy that at all - part of the great thing about an MMO is exploring stuff with others.

What are your thoughts Vendayn?

Well, some people have played a long time and know a lot. But like my guild leader has played a while, and does have a lot of stuff. But very few people actually have EVERYTHING, especially the higher end items (artifacts). And since its sorta a sandbox kind of game, there is still lots to do, like crafting/housing etc. It isn't like some others I played where even though people know everything...in UO they still help out just as much.

But...you probably will definitely get the feeling you are in a very old, "settled" world. That is the feeling I get. Everywhere has been pretty much touched. Especially in that houses are everywhere and its kinda hard to find a spot (though there are still areas for housing). And the gold economy is pretty wacky, in that some items are very expensive and a lot of people have a lot of gold.

With that said, I always see completely new players (at least trying it out) and people returning that don't have much or had to make new characters. But, like I said, its a very old, settled game world. Not really likely to go around discovering things or exploring places no one else has been. And you'll see people with really good armor/weapons, with a bunch of gold. Pretty settled. I haven't really felt like I discovered anything at all in my week of playing.

Though granted, pretty much any MMO past 3 months old everything is pretty much discovered in most of them. Then there is a wiki or fansites with all the info on them lol. Not like how MMOs used to be, before sites like WoWhead or whatever has an encyclopedia of information shortly after release. I remember playing Everquest for years and still didn't know that much about it. These days, all that info is right online.

But yeah, sadly UO probably not a good fit for exploring/discovering things. Even though there is a steady wave of new players/returnees, the game is pretty old to discover anything. You could maybe try a free shard, I don't have any recommendations...but some of them might be good for that if you wanted to try some version of UO.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

...I felt like I was joining about 10 years too late - everyone knew everything, everyone had everything, and I basically felt like I was just messing about whilst everyone else had already done it all.

If you play alone, you'll basically be exploring new areas because then you do not have anyone tell you "been there, done that", but then, why play an mmo
If you start playing with a friend(s) then it's like above unless you read about everything on the internet.
If you start playing, join a guild then you'll be joining the old timers club where people makes you feel welcome because YOU are new and fresh to them, unlike the rest of the game.

And I agree with jocan. Nostalgia tripping. I got the title screen music (stones) on my player and even then i feel the nostalgia every time.
