I never played Ultima Online, but I remember looking at an advertisement for it once.

I'm sure someone around here would be more than happy to provide a run-down of what it was like, to benefit the uninformed classes such as myself.

I used to have a server or two running under Sphere Server(if anyone even knows what that is).  But it had its own modding language instead of one regularly used, it was closed source, and I was young and totally inexperienced at that time anyway.  I think I'll be using UOX this time around;  Open Source, moddable with JavaScript, etc.  Awesome.

Tylui, it's great but it takes A LOT of work and there're a lot of bugs and cheaters to deal with.
It's even much more time-consuming than actual gaming. And it takes a lot.

I helped to script a bit and we made a stable server (with beds to sleep, temperature and stuff =)) but it took about 2 years to make it to the beta-test phase. Too much scripting/content/bugtesting.

There's too many to advertise.

If you want to know precise details, there's a lot of info at http://uo.stratics.com/.
basically it's game with hunger and other stuff (scriptable, i.e. some servers have tiredness and body temperature/sickness).

It features simple stats system (strength, agility, intelligence -> health, stamina, mana ; also stats affect verious things, i.e. strength -> melee damage, agi -> attack speed etc.).
But it has nice skill system: 54 vanilla + expansions/scripts.
The skills grow with usage, no levels etc. However many shards use class system with skill restrictions and class levels, but I prefer original free skills.
There's a huge world with islands, caves and dungeons, different biomes from deserts to snow plains etc. Hundreds of different monsters and nice quests (if you have nice staff add to this nice Game Master-driven quests like attacks of monsters on cities and quests for artifacts of power).
It has complex magery system with different spells from 'magic arrow' and 'create food' to 'summon demon' and 'polymorph self'.
There're various jobs and professions avaliable to you: you may be a ranger, or warrior, or mighty wizard, or sneaky thief, or mere crops-grower, or everything-in-one. However crafts are not too easy to study, i.e. you have to smelt + forge A LOT of various daggers, bucklers and helmets to reach the Grandmaster status. Sewing is even harder, because you should grow cotton first/breed sheep and get wool from them, then process it at loom and cut it on pieces of cloth. However you just can buy it.
PvP system is balanced (usually, however it strongly depends on server scripts), strong guild system, guildwars etc.
Own property: you can build your own houses and decorate them with crafted items/furniture, in earlier versions you had basic set of buildings from "toilet" (1-room house) to huge castle. However in later versions there's a custom structures feature: you can make your own house using set of objects (walls, windows, teleporters, ladders etc.) which leads to some very unique buildings (like skull-shaped dark temple or an Elven glade).
Boats, mounts (from horse to dinosaur-like zostriches and magic summons).

Bah, too many things to explain.

Plus "Omigod B@D GR%PHIXX" for many young players (but whom do I say it to... you play DF), but I like that 2d-style, it's in my heart and I won't exchange it for anything (there's a pseudo-3d interface with 3d objects but it's bad for me -too hard to "read", guys who can't get used to graphic tilesets here will understand me easily).

Screenees:
1) OMG naked people! xD

2) "gandalf" :) and adventurers vs Cyclops on a bridge

3) Example of custom house and 3d interface
http://www.kingdomreborn.ru/images/uokr/aboutKR/about6b.jpg
P.S. mag eis polymorphed into the red dragon here.

4) Equipment and characters (this image really shows just different "desktops" - visual styles for 2d version.

Does Hybrid have the game-master created quests?

EDIT:  I downloaded razor, but it turns out Psi Ops was released for free.  My friend Nat used to act like it was the coolest game ever made, so I probably won't try UO for a few days.

How am I supposed to steal locked down things? There's no command which does anything to them. Im on the Hybrid server.

As you journey to the center of the world, feel free to read the death announcements of those dwarves that suffer your neglect.

One billion b-balls dribbling simultaneously throughout the galaxy. One trillion b-balls being slam dunked through a hoop throughout the cosmos. I can feel every single b-ball that has ever existed at my fingertips, I can feel their collective knowledge channeling through my veins. Every jumpshot, every rebound and three-pointer, every layup, dunk and free throw.

Also, in picture 2, why is the wizard meleeing the cyclops while the three warrior-types stand around and watch?

You steal from players' backpacks or from containers in npc towns.

Edit: If anyone's on Hybrid, I'll be in the Minoc hills mining ore with my dwarf. (Avuz Koloth)

Edit2: Would valorite be the UO equivalent to adamantine? It's not as rare as in DF, but it's about 5x as expensive as iron and much tougher.

Edit3: There's an active orc roleplaying guild on the shard. Could turn out to be the equivalent of DF goblins ingame? :P

I'm trying to buy a plot near the mountains east of the Orc Fort.

When I opened the game, I could only play human and elf, and many of the classes were unavailable.  Do I need the expansion packs for a free server?

Which version do you have?
Each server has its own version/expansion requirement and race/skills/class/scripts settings.

Also, in picture 2, why is the wizard meleeing the cyclops while the three warrior-types stand around and watch?

I don't really know, maybe they wanted a funny "gandalf" screenshot, or wizard is casting/summoning something. In Ultima in PvE usually you can easily run from monster unless it has some kind of paralyze ability/spell or an instakill attack (like those ancient wyrms).

Would valorite be the UO equivalent to adamantine? It's not as rare as in DF, but it's about 5x as expensive as iron and much tougher.

Again it depends on server. Usually the server site has mining table with ore table/values  whereyou can check the relative tier of an ore.

OK I'll look in it for you.
Although I now see why you ask so much questions. The shard main site has somewhat unsorted info...
Usually it's more organized.

Anyway I've found this place for you:
http://www.uogamers.com/knowledge/

It has a lot of things for you to learn.

About the ore: I didn't find the ore table but there's a skill-ore relative table which shows that the valorite is the best:

The recent version is the one to use, you might want to use the auto patch to make sure it is the MOST recent version. Hybrid doesn't use any of the expansion packs like elves, spellweaving, japanese ninjas etc... just (fairly) classic uo.

I got a house to use as a Dwarf Outpost, going to put a guildstone there too.

Planning on killing myself a few orcs, the one-dwarf army?

Edit: Any suggestions for the fortress name?
