I don't have an avatar.  I tried it for a bit, but it just wasn't working out for me.  It was exactly this kind of "everyone has one, so you should too" mentality that I was hoping to avoid.

For me the avatar is just another way to show something funny; also it makes easier to distinguish posters faster (not for everyone). This is why this is an option - you may like it, or you may not.

I, too, have found them somewhat useful for identifying posters. Rarely do you find an ☼avatar☼, but when you do they are nice to admire.

I've actually had a harder time recognizing people since the switch...   I look at the shiny avatars instead of the name, and I can't figure out who's saying what. 

Avatars just look a lot alike to me.  I don't really see the image so much as I see someone trying to make themselves look more impressive, and that is always the same.  I kinda have to block out the images if I'm going to pay any attention to the text.

Why don't you just turn them off? It's right there in your profile settings. You don't have to berate people for not accommodating your wishes. You yourself stated once that it's impossible to "correct" the ways of internet folk.

Far be it from me to call you selfish, but some of us enjoy showing off nonsensical stuff like this.
