Ever get hit in the eye with a sunflower going 30mph?

...Do you even know how big a sunflower is?

About as tall as I am, if not taller, and as big around as my head. All the other flowers know not to piss them off.

Crossbows are actually fairly effective hammers. Only problem is that they use the Hammer skill. Not the crossbow skill.

For some reason I picture the fact that they use them as hammers as a situation where they thought "Hey, the crossbow being intact won't matter very much if I die. Imma whack that sucker upside the head, and hope I come out alive."

Less a legitimate battle tactic, and more a situation where they really have nothing else to lose, and abandon all reasonable treatment of their equipment. Once items can be destroyed in battle, I see it as reflecting this way in combat situations clearly and effectively.

It would be nice if, when equipment damage comes into play, a dwarf is more likely to run away than bash someone with an artifact or masterwork crossbow - after all, if you ran out of bullets in your gold-plated diamond-encrusted handgun you wouldn't run up and start smacking people with it.

BTW I don't mean to make anyone upset here, but please don't add the words (combat, battle, dire, war) to a weapon to make it sound better. Combat boots? I can see a difference between that and just "boots". Combat gun? Not so much.

Don't you know? Dwarven crossbows are built over a hammer with the head acting the shoulder rest. When a release is pressed, the hammer is released and the party is on.

I would. A gun made of gold is just just made for pistol whippen. Its heavy and stylish. Now a gold edged weapon would wear out very fast. But a gold hammer or mace would just blunt its edges\.

I would throw the gun at him, what's strange is that it is a way better idea in DF than in RL and still people in the movies do it all the time.

Well, a pointy edge would make a crossbow more dangerous, but I think they are already powerful enough...

Mod it into your own game if you want.

A serious thought related to crossbow bayonets:

Why not let several pieces of armour be furnished with melee... ah... accessories. Like boots with toe spikes, greaves and knee guards with spikes, shields with sharp edges and spikes, helms with pike caps, etc. These would allow additional attacks and allow armoured crossbowmen some additional clinch lethality.
