Firefox 2, Windows XP media center 2005. And the internal loading is quite fast; it's only that initial loading that takes forever, for some reason.

I'd almost suspect my internet provider of putting a crimp on it.  :-\

You can download FireFox 3 right now if you go to www.firefox.com.  You might try that?

Or you know... YOu could just use Opera because Opera > All. ^_^

I do think some issues could be solved with a new theme, but I don't know enough about board themes to make one.   The page headers everywhere take up a lot of space.  It's odd, because they did on the old forum too, but it didn't bother me for some reason. I'd like a theme that is more compact, so you can see more topics on a page.  The pointless "Logged" icon is wasting space in each message.   A lot of places have unnecessary margins.
The top section can be shrunk somewhat by clicking the "-" at the top right, if that helps.
The "Logged" doesn't waste any space. To the left of that is where the note shows up indicating a post has been edited.
There are a few places that could be compacted a bit, but it's a pretty minor issue I think.

Oh, my biggest issue now is the Search.  I'd like to search for all posts by a user in the last 15 days, but Search requires a keyword.  And you can't use "the" or "a", or search for all posts without asparagus.  I tried searching for Dwarf, but it seemed like there should be more.  It was slower than the old search, and the results were bloated.  I just need a list of topics and post #, like before.
To view the last posts of a person, go to their profile and you'll see a link to do that.
The search can potentially be a bit slow, most often if you search for something nobody else has searched for yet, or if you search for something which shows up in most posts. This should smooth out a bit over time.
An oddity with the SMF search is that the top search box will only search within the particular board you're in. If you want to search the entire forum, you need to go back to the index and do it or instead click the little magnifying glass icon to go to the advanced search form.

Also, the search supports more advanced methods like searching for phrases by surrounding them with ", or excluding results with certain words by sticking a - in front of them. Pretty much the same as you can do with Google or other advanced search engines.

Also, I really dislike the smilies, they have a white "aura" that was obviously meant so they would blend well with a white background. It's really annoying.
If you'd like, I can donate a pack of smilies I made myself, though most of them have the downside of being animated. (they blend perfectly with any background though.)
Example of one:
Yeah, I've said it before, the default smileys for SMF are pretty crappy (even ignoring the "halo" effect on dark backgrounds). I'm actually a bit fond of the old default phpBB2 smileys, which also show up well on any background. I'd definitely like to see the default SMF smileys swapped out for better ones.

I don't suppose anybody knows why this forum takes two or three minutes to load for me, do they? The old ones loaded right off. I seem to have similar troubles with other SMF forums.
Does that for me, too. Don't know about other SMF forums.
My ISP is pretty crappy, so that might be it.
Two to three minutes? Ouch. So it's when you go to the index? Only the first time, or every time?
I've been running on my old 650mhz laptop for the past few days with both Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 and haven't noticed any slowdowns like that. Firefox 3 is definitely better, though. :)

I'm running Firefox 2 on Windows XP Profession SP 1 and Ubuntu 7.10 on my desktop and Firefox 3 on Ubuntu 8.04 on my laptop. On both, it seems that the first time I load any page as well as when I log in (If I don't have it set to do so automatically) on any particular day on any particular computer, it takes a good 5 minutes.

EXAMPLE for clarity:
Day1: I open up my laptop, go to the page. It takes forever to load. I log in, and choose "forever" for the duration. It takes forever to load. After that point, I can do anything on the forum on my laptop without any lag.
Later that day, I do the same thing over on my desktop, to the same effect.

Day2: I open up my laptop load the forum. Once again, it takes forever, but then I can go to any page on the forum with little-to-no wait.
Etc, etc...

It's the first time I go to the index after visiting any other site; any internal clicking, back/forward clicks, etc. within the forums are plenty fast.

I'm not sure how to handle things like links to the wiki -- UBB gave me a space to type above the topic list on every board, and I don't know if I have that here.  A sticky wouldn't be quite the same for things like the wiki/faq/bug list links.

I'll handle the dev/manual links in a while.  I have to use the html building utilities for those, which requires a few extra clicks, so I'm putting it off.

No idea what's going on with the user authentification thing...

I guess I can set up a formal poll for the signatures in a bit.  Since some people want to be able to see text signatures without having to adblock out images (I don't think you can disable images specifically from your profile), there's something to be resolved.  As far as admins editing out signatures and so on, that's sort of tricky, since there are likely to be a lot of judgement calls and it'll be a hassle.  My own view is that seeing an image even taller than ~60pixels constantly in a thread as I read is a disruption and makes things harder, but I'll defer to a vote on this if there's enough support.  This is less true but sort of applicable for tall text sigs as well.

edit: I put up a poll.

With the spacing -- an issue I've had brought up in email, and maybe some of the spacing discussion here was about this is the following -- new vs. old.  The old forums give you twice as many topics in the same space, so it's easier for some styles of forum-reading (mine included, since I'll open up a tab for every topic on a page in bugs/suggestions).  I'm not sure what other views are on this.

Yeah, I can't fix the times people registered, since I don't think that info was in the old forum, but perhaps I can turn off the time display somehow.

We can address smilies in a bit, once things have settled down somewhat.

Well, I'm not too particular about either spacing issues. It's all much easier to read and follow on every thread. I like the news feature, too.

One thing, if you use Firefox, you might want to check it out in Firefox 3. The handling of floats and spacing is improved, with the result in this case being that the "last post" link on the far left of the topic listing isn't shown on it's own line. This tightens it up considerably.
You can get a stable release candidate version of Firefox 3 now (which is what I'm using), or wait until tomorrow when they're supposed to release the official first full release of Firefox 3.

EDIT: an example of what it looks like in FF3:

I want to go in and tweak the php so that the "new" button shows up right after the thread title before the pages (or after) such that it doesn't take up a line at all.

Another forum I hang out on has it set up that way, though I'm on F 1.5 (I'd upgrade to 2.0 if my webmail plugin had an update that made it work on 2.0) so I have the extra spacing still.

Could the CSS be updated to add some padding around blockquotes?

I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned but even after unsubscribing from some posts that don't belong to announcements I still keep receiving updates.

That'd be nice, they do look a little squished together.

Alternatively you could leave a blank line between the end of the quote and your text (such as I've done here).

This is great. The forum looks good, and I finally can log in from work using my proxy bypasser at home!

If only I could do that with the wiki as well. For some reason, some cookies are more compatible than others with da phpproxy.

Also I think it's great that I can see all the buttons even if I have images turned off. The "new topic" button in the old forum was hidden when I did that. Try to keep that in mind in all future theme tweakings.

It has to do with the <img alt="text"> tag.  If there's no alt text the image simply disapears when images are disabled.

Is there a way to have "return to this topic" marked by default? It's a bit annoying that I'm kicked to the post index every time I post.
Does it get saved? I guess I'll find out after I post this one. Unless it's a javascript thing, which I have to turn off on this browser at work.
It would be maybe a good idea to have a public "Testing" forum that gets wiped every hour or day or whatever, so we can experiment with stuff like signatures, fonts, I don't know. Maybe it's superfluous but can be a good idea.

You can set it in your profile:

Yeah, it couldn't hurt. They are a little cramped.
