Grukol's Journal, 20th Timber, 1054
I had just made Vag Captain of the Guard when she suddenly ran off to dole out Dwarf Justice. Apparently, one of the miners, Valcon, and Lem had injured the present mayor a long long time ago. However the Mayor didnt forget those accidents and quickly had Vag administer beatings to them all. I just passed Valcon in the hallway not that long ago. He was rubbing gigantic bruises on his legs and he was staggering back to his bedroom. On a side note, we had another soon to be shell related death. The poor fellow went on and on and on about the Shells until his mind snapped. This disheartens me, all of it could have been avoided. I told every dwarf that we must get a shell for that dwarf, so eat only the turtles until then. Apparently I spoke only to the wall.

Grukol's Journal. 4th Moonstone, 1054
I don't know if it was My joining the military that sparked it, or if they finally realized I haven't been bothering them to go into the forest lately. But Jorhind and Skadi have both become Spearmasters! However, I feel that I'm not far off from their skill.

16th Moonstone, 1054
Lem stands at the gate of the Fort laughing.
"Hah! Nothing beats my traps! Nothing!" she laughs more, pointing at the corpse of the Goblin Master Thief.
"Stupid bugger got crushed by the stone-fall traps!"
"Amaaaaazing" muttered a Peasant as he dragged the crushed corpse of the goblin to the refuse pile.

There should have been not enough chunks left together to be dragged.  :(

(Edit: Okay, Okay! I finished it early since I didn't end up doing what I thought I was going to do. Here it is)

Vagúsholon's Notebook, 16th Moonstone, 1054
A Jail! That is what we need, and I have the perfect plan, with 40 cells, enough to hold a good portion of the population, and room to grow if ever needed. Dug down two levels below the deepest depths of our fortress, a perfect design, and an inner stronghold for us all to run to if everything goes foul. *The rest of the next several pages consist of detailed sketches of the notebook consist of complex designs for the Jail, which Vag will show to Grukol.

On a side note, as punishment for injuring the mayor. Oddom was sentenced to a beating. Vag ended up injuring the poor guys spine. I have no idea how much longer he'll live. (If I decide to, I might put him out of his misery)

Grukol's Journal, 5th Granite, 1055
I placed Istrian in the Fortress Guard. He said he wanted to be in it, so I put him in it finally. He seemed a little disheartened when I told him he would have no sword, but I have a feeling we'll be making some soon.

Ledger of the Captain of the Guard, 28th Obsidian, 1054
despite the clear example I made of Valcon and Lem, Oddom decided to test the judicial system of the fortress with an assault on the mayor. While I agree that some of the mandates and policies issued by the mayor are not wise, the way to change is through the vote, not through the fist. Oddom didn't get this, so I decided to make an even greater example of him then I did of Valcon or Lem. I believe this time the message was delivered that attacks on dwarves of the fortress, especially the mayor, are not tolerated.

Ledger of the Captain of the Guard, 5th Granite, 1055
Istrian has been added to the rolls of the Fortress Guard. I feel this is a great thing, since we are unable to patrol the halls with enough strength to prevent crimes from getting to the level where we have to punish with enough force that the dwarf is taken off his duties for several months.

Vagúsholon's Notebook, 5th Granite, 1055
*Sketches of catapult designs, and Structural formulas*

---

OOC: How bad is Oddom's Spine? If it's just an injury he will eventually function. If it's broke, well, he will make a good candidate for contents of a coffin. Also, what is the fortress Guard Strength, as well as Cages/Chains? Naturally Vagúsholon is advocating for a strong jail with a cell hallway of 20 cells for every 50 people, 15% Fortress Guard Strength, rounded down but not counting Vagúsholon (that means 7+Vag right now at 53 pop) and plenty of wood for her Inashvagúsh. And did the entry hall of earlier get built or passed over? is the Jail acceptable or not acceptable? I'm getting curious about what the very fortress looks like, especially thinking about the grand hall  ;)

OOC:
Let's see if I can answer all those questions.
Oddom's Injuries.
Upper Body - Dark Yellow
Right Upper Arm - Light Yellow
Left Lower Leg - Light Yellow
Upper Spine - Dark Yellow
Lower Spine - Dark Yellow
Right now he's in bed, getting fed and watered. But he's Very Drowsy, passing in and out of consciousness. You really did a number on him :P
--=--
Right now the fort has 8 Jail Cells. So, 8 ropes (Dont have an anvil to make chains, yet)8 beds next to said ropes. Only you and Istrian are in the guard. I'm going to recruit all the peasants into the Guard so that'll bring it up to 6 + Vag. Wood isn't an issue for your Siege Engine. Yes the Entry Hall got build. Its not so much an entry hall though. You have to go down the stairs through the  Crafts Level, but eh, I think it works. I'll probably wall off the Craft Level, add a side door to that level so it doesnt take away from the Entry way. Alot of my dwarfs are getting happy thoughts from the well placed Catapults in the hall though.

10th Granite, 1055
"Jorhind has become a legendary champion! Hail Jorhind Tathtatkeskal!"
"HAIL!!" shouts the dwarfs in unison.
"It's been a good many months of training to finally attain that kind of skill" Grukol raises his mug to the new champion.
"May your spear always find its way to the enemies heart!" he bellows.
The village responds in a drunken roar of approval.
---
OOC:
I was looking over our equipment. Now, originally Jorhind and Skadi both had steel spears. But when I looked it over, Jorhind dropped her steel spear and picked up a wooden spear the elves had brought over. So Skadi and myself now have Steel spears.

2nd Slate, 1055
Lem's cackling can be heard from Top side.
"Four of em! Mark it! Four Goblins!" Lem danced as she watched her Traps go off.
"Look at that! GENIUS I SAY!" she grins wildly as Stone spring from their places and plummet on top of the Goblins.
"What in the... What is going on out here!" Grukol came, marching out of the Fort.
"What is all this ruckus about..."
He looks out the Western doors. Seeing nothing but carnage. Peasants flee past him, words float by "Ambush", "Goblins", and "Spears".
He walks over to the mess that Lem had created with her traps. He starts the clean up of the ones that only suffered minor wounds.
---
OOC: My first ambush on this fort. And it was sprung, right underneath all of Lem's traps. Four died instantly, 4 were left injured, fading in and out of consciousness. One managed to poke one of my farmer. Who walked just north of the trap, causing the goblin to run into another trap and die. I sent Grukol out to get more experience, he cleaned up the 3 that were just kinda sprawled out along the moats edge.

Vag has turned herself in. Upon admitting that she too had injured the Mayor a long time ago. She sentenced herself to 50 days in prison. I must admit that was a pretty honorable thing to do. But I can't say that I would do that to myself.

Aww, you didn't build the grand entry as Vag envisioned it, and I don't see the jails coming about   :( Though that could be just because of the scrunching...
Hehe. The Grand entry hall looks sweet, though With the scrunching, I can't find a single jails. Check your .bmps from the exported image, check to see if they got scrunched. If they did, It's a DF problem and not a Map Compressor problem.
Does the wood trade depot next to the stairs inside the place work? I always make mine accessible with ramps.
I see a way to improve the surface defenses. The left side catapults can't fire down/up, only to the left. This prevents coverage of a corner area that should be covered. Changing the walls so that there is a fortification in the proper spot can improve coverage. I assume you also have ramparts on the top that cover marksdwarves stationed on the walls?
Side View:
==fortification
_=Ground
X=Wall/Sand

Do you plan to do your own jail design, or are you open to a custom design? I can upload a map consisting of the custom design, rather then my weird ascii form, so you can see what it really looks like.

I'm always open for suggestion.
The Jail now is just north of the Western Archery range. Its just Eight 2x3 rooms with rope and a rope. I feel the general design is a complete and utter mess, I'll be trying to clean it all up eventually. I thank Toady everyday for walls, it makes reorganizing things so much easier
