The salvagers have left, after making some puzzling statements about the price of goods back home. What should we care that Leather waterskins are expensive?
Guess it's back to surviving. It's not so bad here, once you get used to it.

We received a new body today; Huarch, a tanner by trade, but she claims to have some proficiency with an axe... we'll see how that goes.

Apparently she was sent by one of the other groups to link up with us, what with the local situation though, we're not confident she can make it back alive. She's staying with us for the time being, as long as she helps out she's more than welcome.

Talking with her it seems like we're in better shape than the others... this does not sit well with me at all.

At least the Tuna have backed off. We are expanding our fortifications out from the cliffside, maybe we can reclaim our previous salvage as well.

----
As an aside, it occurs to me that many Forts post screenshots of new dwarves when they arrive, but I have neglected to do this for any at all; what do you guys think, should I rectify this or just continue to ignore them?

Captains Log, 7th moonstone, 1051

With the salvagers gone and work continuing on our seawall expansions, I have decided to take the time to better record the personal lives of myself and my companions. We have another year ahead of us in this place, and who knows what it will hold. Best to get these things down on paper while I can.

Ok, brief time out for a little problem I have; namely, the tuna.

The problem being that, in reality, they have taken up position in the far corner of the ocean and haven't budged for two seasons now.
This wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't terribly unexciting, coupled with the fact that their presence prevents other undead from spawning. As it stands the fort is safer than if it was in a wilderness biome.

So I'm wondering how you think I should rectify this situation;
I've considered using Dwarf Companion to slaughter them all and let new undead shuffle in, or maybe teleport them somewhere and hope they actually do something. It looks like there's a bunch of other stuff I can do to them with it, but I really only got it with a mind to do something about them so I don't know the intricacies of the program.

So what do you guys think? It's almost spring, so they've nearly been there a year and It's going to be pretty uneventful if I don't get rid of them somehow.

I say use my usual proven fun method of zombifying...hmm...that won't work here.

I wonder if you can teleport them 20 z-levels up above the fortress.
Let the dwarves figure that one out.

Captains log, 24th of Granite, 1051

We've finally completed fortifying our local area; walls to hold both the waves and the beasts at bay are in place. The tuna seem to have left the area, we haven't seen anything of them since breaking the seal on our burrows and beginning this small fort.

It is good to have the beach again, and such a large portion of it at that. Now that we have some passing degree of security, it may be time check out that magma deposit Runesinger and Sir Ian discovered...

There is also the matter of gaining freshwater, I have been speaking with Imp, Dozmud and Beard on the matter, all old sailors like myself, and they each recall hearing about a filtration method, but can't quite remember the specifics. I will leave them to work on it while I take Runesinger and Sir Ian to prospect that Magma...

Excellent, I'm in! Just set me up with an axe in the military and I swear to extinguish these undead hoards by my lonesome.

3rd Slate, 1051

Their picks weren't actually suited to the task at hand; shovels would probably serve them better. Yet still they laboured; Runesinger at the lead with Barnabus and Sir Ian clearing away the detritus he left behind with each heavy handed swing. Soil parted before them, until they had reached a point some 50 paces into the cliffside.

"This is it, I think" began Runesinger, Wiping the sweat from his brow.
Barnabus looked over at him. "How can you tell?"
"Oh, I took some measurements from the main staircase. It's hard to be exact but it's not like we're looking for adamantine."
"Good." Barnabus had heard stories of what happened to those strongholds which had been 'fortunate' enough to find adamantine.
Sir Ian approached them. "Well, what are we waiting for then? C'mon old chaps, let's put our backs into it."

The soil emptied away beneath them as they struck the earth. It was not long before the were greeted by a blast of hot, humid air.

"What the..." Muttered the captain.

Beneath them lay a vast chambered filled with a foggy haze. The red glow told them that there was a sizeable amount of magma somewhere down there. The walls practically dripped with water, though more steam seemed to rise from them than anything else.

"Looks like the pipe opens into the Aquifer. Guess it's a natural cavern with decent waterseals, and the heat of the magma there helps keep it from bursting."
They both looked at Runesinger.
"What? I told you I'm going to be the greatest mason to ever live; you don't think I could do that without knowing about magma tubes, did you?"

Captains Log, 3rd slate, 1051

We've found the magma pipe, though I don't know what we can do with it; it's sitting right in the aquifer. Any attempts to expand it would bust the seal and pour the water right out. Runesinger thinks we can get a feel for how the tube flows from up here, and punch into it safely beneath the aquifer. I'd give this more consideration if our stay was going to be longer. As is I just don't think it's worth the trouble.

What about building a staircase though the dry obsidian surrounding the tube?  That will let you out underneath the aquifer, and then you can tap into it as much as you like from down there.

You'll still need a "ledge" to do it safely, though.

Captains Log, 11th of Slate, 1052

20 Dwarves just showed up on our doorstep! Huarch recognizes some of them, apparently they're survivors from his ship. The tale they tell is grim indeed; their entire ship fled intact, but over the past year they have been whittled down to this sorry handful. The salvagers must have played up the security of our location, they seem to have come here thinking they'll be safe.

Then again, nobody's died here yet, so who knows?

a couple of the more capable individuals came to me and introduced themselves.

He calls himself Trask, and has pledged to help defend the camp. With all these people we can certainly afford a few for such tasks, so I'm sure he'll be able to help out.

Another one for helping the camp; he claims he was a pretty good shot back in the day and wants a crossbow. We only have darts right now and I'm certainly not going to ask him to give it up, but we'll see what we can do. He also wants to carve bones and work with mechanics, but I don't think we've got the resources to spare for such endeavours.

Gods be praised! At long last, a Dwarf who knows how to work a still! At least she says so, she looks kind of green to me but hey, any booze is better than no booze.

Another Carpenter, not a whole lot of use. He's expressed an interest in keeping up on our records though. I barely have time for it anymore so he's welcome to the post, once we can get him an office squared away.

She seemed a bit neurotic to me, very conflicted in her inclinations... She's good with metal, and seems interested in branching out to mechanisms and pumps... again, not very useful skills in our situation. She's still alive after a year in this place, which says something.

I don't know what this guys problem is. First thing he did when he got here was ask me if we had any spare swords. We don't, but that didn't stop him from specifically inquiring about every kind of sword I have yet to know, and many I do not. Or did not, before I met him. I guess he can help guard camp?

As for the rest of them there's...
1 Hunter
1 ArmourSmith
1 Leatherworker
1 Weaver
1 Fisherdwarf
1 Thresher
1 Miller
1 Dyer
1 Soap maker
1 Lye maker
and 2 unskilled individuals.
Mostly ladies, looks like most of the men perished at their camp. I have no idea how we're going to accommodate all of them; we were entirely unprepared for this many...

Yarrr, be there peasants in these parts?  If any immigrants come in sight, surely one shall be requested by me, aye!

Loess MacDrumlin.  Young, and beginning a lowely peasant (or some generally low-skill immigrant), but with a distinct love of earth and stone that drives him onward.  Amateur mineralogist.  Perpetually manic personality, optomistic to a fault, and thus an easy target.  Won't say how he came to be in the area, but the dried blood soaked into the wooden handle of his rock hammer is all too telling...
Jobs: Glassworker.  This includes both glassblowing and gem cutting.  Prefers to cut the glass he made himself, as a matter of principle.  Hammerdwarf.  Miner.  Despite his love of gems, he feels guilt when forced to dig out gems, revering them in their natural state, and fearing their destruction.

Kudos if you can get a dwarf who actually likes any of the following: any type of glass, expecially green glass, hammers, or any interesting stones.  And cats for their aloofness.
Feel free to have him have any other stone and gem related jobs, including masonry, stonecrafting, gem setting, ect.  He is willing to haul his own sand.

I'll take the fisherdwarf, name him/her McPie. He/She narrowly escaped death at the hands of an undead tuna, and the experience made him/her vow to fight the skeletuna menace until it is no more. Make him/her whatever military class you're comfortable with. Swordsdwarf may be a good idea, what with all the obsidian lying around.

Captains Log, 6th Hematite, 1052

It is summer again, though in this burning hell-hole it is difficult to tell. Good news for a change; the Tuna have finally left the area, and we can finally stop worrying about bloody death from the sea.

Now we have to worry about bloody death from above; the Elephants are back. The tuna are dreadful, the way they soar through the air; but the very earth shakes at the footsteps of these beasts. We have walled them out, but I cannot help but worry they will find a way through.

We have started a self defense force, of sorts; I am tutoring some of the lads and lasses in the use of a blade, while the rest participate in brawls to toughen themselves up. I doubt they would be of much effect should anything happen, but at least it helps keep spirits up.

The new comers are acclimating nicely, and there's only a couple more months till rescue. If all goes well we'll be out of here by Moonstone and never have to look at the damn place again.

The Fisherdwarf, McPie, came to me and asked if she could join the lads in training. I told her sure, why not.

She said "Thanks, Cap!" I told her I'm really more of a "Cap'n". She just stared at me for a sec. I don't think she got the joke.

--Note--
The only available dwarves I have at the moment are ladies*, anyone who's interested in joining right away will have to take one of them; if there's a gender requirement I can wait for immigrants, but otherwise new dwarves will most likely be ladies.
*I do have a male armorsmith who's not adopted, but given his professions long-term importance I'm unfortunately going to have to keep him as an armorsmith
Also: any and all feedback is highly appreciated, as this *is* a writing exercise for me.

Captains Log, 8th Hematite, 1052

The Jeweler, Minkos Ematheshtan, has been gripped by a strange madness, and stands in the middle of the courtyard shouting about gems for some reason. I've tried getting her to shut up but she just won't be still; even more disturbing is the manner in which she forgoes sleep and food with little consequence, surely this is another manifestation of this places vile curse.

We are going to humour her requests and see where that gets us; perhaps we can exorcise this demon by aquiescing to its demands. they are simple enough.
