Captains log, 11th of Hematite, 1054

The Battle is over, and things in the fort are getting back into their regular swing. I've ordered the haulers to drag the goblins armour down to the forges for melting. Their clothes will get binned, we'll figure out what to do with it later. as for the bodies, we're letting them rot with the rest of the garbage. I figure we can use the bone for something.

The men seem impressed with my performance. I'm somewhat disappointed myself. I must be getting rusty to let those two get away like that.

Oh well, live goblins can spread the word better than dead ones can. Let them fear us. We have other matters to tend to.

Captains log, 13th of Hematite, 1054
Is it that time of year allready? The Human caravan has arrived and we're still busy cleaning up with the siege. We don't have the dwarfpower to handle all this hauling. Hopefully we'll be able to get it all done before they have to go.

Captains log, 15th of Hematite, 1054
Today I saw a very strange things; the haulers have placed the goblin corpses in a meticulous line, from tallest to shortest, and have reassembled them from their various missing body parts.

What is truly disturbing, however, is that each corpse has been left with a single sock.

We began trading today; lots of leather in the shipment. Definitely not what we had asked for. are these humans deaf? I said wood, and barrels. Not dead animal skins.
Guess we'll just have to make do.

Captains log, 28th of Hematite, 1054
The strange forces that have seized our dwarves before have fallen upon Biggs, the Engineer. He has taken over the mechanics workshop with some alunite, basalt, and groundhog leather. He works furiously on his mysterious construction, while we await patiently for the return of out Mechanics workshop.
Although it's not like we have allot of use for the things. He can probably keep the workshop for all I care.

Captains Log, 4th of Malachite, 1054
Biggs has finished his construction, Litez Orshet, the sorcerer of cremation, an alunite mechanism. valued at 7200, it menaces with spikes of alunite wrapped in groundhog leather, and has an image of a tigerfish on it in basalt.
I rather like the name myself.

In other news, one of the skelephants has broken from its herd and is chasing away our reclaimation efforts; I believe it is time to mobilize our forces and teach this beast a lesson.

Captains Log, 10th of Malachite, 1054

I sent Trask, Mcpie, and Bob to deal with the Skelephant menace, but it appears that we underestimated our foe. Drawn to their cries for help, Huarchs team came upon them; uninjured but exhausted, they were hacking away at the beast to no avail. Huarch tells how he witnessed their fearsome regeneration; bone chips growing back even under the unrelenting blows of our axes.

Huarchs team tried to help but they were also unable to destroy the beast, overexerting themselves in a stalemate that would quickly end when their stamina expired. Fortunately I received word of their plight before things became dire, and was able to arrive on the scene in time to dispatch the beast.

While we lost no dwarves, the skirmish was costly; Huarch had his left arm broken, Trask his right, and Mcpie has several fractured Ribs. in addition, the Wrestler Kadol appears to have suffered brain trauma; she will no longer be able to spar with the others. Perhaps I should shift her over to Darts bow corps? She is adept with her wrestling but barely skilled with the sword, it would perhaps be more valuable for her to learn the ways of the bow where her brain won't get any worse.

Heh heh, the life of a cook is not a very exciting one, eh?  Well, at least the stomachs of these soldiers are warmed by my filling and tasty meals.

By the way, any luck with getting a pool set up?

Captains log, 16th of Malachite, 1054

We continue our skirmishes with the elephants; two more have fallen. The first sought out the breach in the walls and I was forced to combat it within the confines of the upper tower; held within such a tight space its movements were hampered and it fell easily to my blades.
The second stood atop the cliffs, seeking to strikes terror into us as they had done our first year here; yet we were more prepared this time. Dart and his bow corps. opened fire on the beast; the sheer volume of fire overwhelmed it and, despite its healing capabilities, it was felled. Numerous bolts hung from its tattered frame.
Three remain of this herd, though another has moved in from the west. Despite their seeming endless numbers, the victory of their deaths seems substantial.
We will have to repair that hole soon though. We cannot afford the risk of an entire herd attacking at once; I fear we would be swiftly overwhelmed.

Your life may be kind of dull, but you're certainly cranking out the masterwork roasts these days. Of course, they're too large to stick in a barrel so I'm concerned that you're making too much to eat and it'll rot.

I've put the pool on hold, so few idlers and so much to do. For now the military gets swimming lessons from standing in the waves; I figure if Beard can become an expert swimmer from standing there fishing, the soldiers can get experience from standing there on watch.

Sweet, Biggs went legendary! I was afraid he was gonna end up being a little boring. That artifact is kind of disappointing, but it does have a *really* awesome -<<name>>-. It needs to get used as a lever triggering some absurd magma trap...  ;)

Just switch me over to biscuits.  Less fattening, same great taste.

And by "fattening", I of course mean the expansion of food stockpiles via overly-huge stacks of food.

Captains log, 27th of Malachite, 1054

Our continued operations against the Elephants of this region have left our military nearly crippled. Dart has had one of his shoulders broken and Ingish has a fractured hip after they rushed one of the zombies. I don't understand why they didn't merely walk away to get more bolts. I attempted to bail them out, but the blade of my sword lodged in the elephant and I was stuck wrestling with it until they could get word to Bob. I managed to keep it pinned in place; not hard with a beast so slow, but could not overcome its healing factor. When Bob arrived we were able to finally put the creature down.

This leaves us with only myself, Bob, the Marskdwarf Ustuth and the Wrestler Lokum as fully fit for fighting.

Speaking of Lokum, I haven't seen him at practice lately...

Captains Log, 28th of Malachite, 1054

We found Lokum today, down one of the dried out pools in the forest. It appears he had fallen in it during the goblin skirmish, and had gone unnoticed in the cleanup. We have dug him out and he's taking it stoically. Good soldier that Dwarf, I think he may be in line for a promotion.

It appears that Ingish has ridden the 'heroism' of his injuries to become the next mayor. I trust his military sensibilities will help prevent some of the silliness we suffered under our last Mayor.

I am currently looking at candidates to bring into the military to help supplement our defenses while our original forces heal.

Oh cool, Bob is still alive and uninjured!  So is he actually skilled or is he just taking forever to figure out which sword to bring and gets to the action just in time for the enemy to die?

All those people with the cool names will soon know the Legend of Bob!

Impressive as usual GRead.  :)

Bob is more lucky than lazy or skilled; everyone was drafted at the same time so he's roughly comparable to the rest of the military, they were just the unfortunate ones to get stomped when they got too tired to keep fighting. Part of the problem is weaponry; Barnabus has the only good weapon at the moment so it's difficult to damage the elephants faster than they heal, even for an Ultra-Mighty like Trask.
Trask is probably in a bit of trouble actually; all his skill ups appear to have gone into strength and agility; he has no toughness boosts, so I fear he may be in bed for awhile.

Topside construction is almost finished; it will keep out non-fliers but won't stop building destroyers. I also have to look into routing for caravans; the waves are threatening them so I need to find another secure route in.

I've heard that floor constructions block waves.  Maybe you can just lay a line of them along the beach the caravan comes from to protect them.

You could also make a slightly more epic looking elevated highway that starts where they show up but that would take quite some time to construct.

I've actually got a seawall blocking all the way to each border, but you can't build within 5 of the maps edge and the waves get through there.
Allready had them scuttle a wagon, hoping to prevent it from happening again; I'll probably just cut that gate down to 2 wide so the wagons come in from a different map edge.

Behold the great and glorious wagon trail!  (stolen from somebody else)

code:

Since you can't place a building right on the map edge (such as a constructed wall.  Roads and bridges work just fine), you'll have to channel out the area instead.  Or, you could just do that for all the pillars.  But that doesn't look as nice...  And, you can't put statues on top of a channel.

I suppose, theoretically, you could first dig the pits, then (once slightly more established) build a wall on top of each pit, then (once even more established A.K.A. nothin' better to do) put a statue on top of each.

It's a very nice design.  I can't for the life of me remember who posted it originally, though...

wow! I'd considered a design like that for a different fort a few weeks ago, as a kind of 'cool way to border a road', but I hadn't considered that putting them two apart would direct wagon traffic through it. Very nice. I think I'm going to go with redirecting them for now, but I think something like that is definitely going to be in the works!

Captains Log, 1st Limestone 1054

Huarch and Ingish have healed today, their bones mended. Unfortunately the others remain bedridden, so our military remains shorthanded.

I have commissioned more armour from Erush, we should be able to expand the size of our forces soon.
Recent skirmishes with the elephants have also made it abundantly clear that we need to improve our weaponry as well; but without a good weaponsmith in the fort I'm not sure how we'll go about doing that.

It is autumn! the caravan from home should be arriving soon; with the conflict escalating I fear for their safety, but alas, we do not have the men to spare to safeguard. I pray they brought enough guards with them.
