{Succession} The (real) Museum
« on: April 16, 2008, 08:13:00 pm »

Hello all! First I'd like to apologize for the confusion this thread has caused. I would like to quite firmly say that this is the official thread and no more will be made. That said, let us begin!

Hello. Some of you might remember me. Well, I'm Squeegy, a Dwarf Fortress player from a while ago. I quit for two long periods of time after DF ruined my best fortess in 38a. I came back, found my other The Museum thread gone, and left again. Now that I'm back, I've decided to recreate The Museum.

The Museum! How does it work? Well, the entire fortress is devoted to creating one museum. The rules of the Museum:

1. Only exceptional, masterpiece, or artifact works of art.
2. Exhibits can include socks, bolts, engravings, bridges, etc. I'm not picky, as long as it's good quality.
3. The Museum cannot be used for anything other than storage. This means no eating in the Museum. No sleeping in The Museum. No sparring in The Museum. No workshops in the Museum. Got it?
4. The Museum must not have blood, vomit, or anything on any part of it. It gets on a wall, you replace the wall. It gets on an exhibit, you replace the exhibit. Okay?
5. Arenas can be placed in the Museum.
6. Curators get a year to play, but can request an extra month to finish things up.

More may be added.

Curators
1. Thasero
2. Dwarf Fanatic cancels cancel task; interrupted by cancellation
3. Squeegy
4. Boksi
5. Jack A T
6. Fedor
7. Linthar

DFMA: http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-2488-goldgifted

The Year 1 save file: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=113

The next player, for Year 2, is Dwarf Fanatic.

We struck adamantine!  I sure as heck wasn't expecting that.  The funny thing is, I didn't even use Regional Prospector to pick the site, just the normal embark screen.  I had no idea that we even had adamantine, much less that I would accidentally run into it smack dab below the main staircase.  I don't have a previous save, and anyway having unexpected potential disasters is part of the succession game, right?

There's still a good long while before the dwarf caravan arrives that will report the existence of adamantine, so there's time to prepare - either prepare to deal with it, or prepare to destroy the caravan in some way and keep the Museum quiet for a while.

My joke on the DFMA comments to the contrary, I didn't mine any adamantine out before saving the file.  The Hidden Fun Stuff is still safely Hidden.  I did save scum afterwards out of curiosity so I could take a peek, and I can tell you that it's !!Hidden Fun Stuff!! - I couldn't even wall it up fast enough to save the fortress, and I tried twice.</STRONG>

Requirements:
None. You do not have to be good at DF to sign up. Anyone can be curator of the museum!

Move it to a folder called 'region1' if there isn't one, in saves, and run DF. It should show up.

The save is a zip file.  You should extract it (a Mac can do so automatically) and put the resulting folder in your Dwarf Fortress folder.

There's a spot in the Dwarf Fortress folder where saved files are kept.  They're folders with names like "region1", "region2" etc.  Rename the save to this scheme - so if your last save is named "region6", rename the Museum save to be "region7" and put it right there.  Then you should be able to run it in DF.

However, I don't know if it will really work cross-platform... I run a dual-OS household myself, but I only play DF on the Windows machine.

To take screenshots on a Mac, pause the game, then hit apple-shift-3.  That will take a snapshot of everything on the current screen and save it to your desktop.  The screenshots get saved as Picture 1, Picture 2, etc.  You'll want to open the pictures up on a program and cut-and-paste so only the Dwarf Fortress stuff is showing - just find any free program on the Web.  Then go to tinypic.com and you can follow the rest of the steps as usual.

And yes, NOT mining out the adamantine would be a very good idea for now.  I tried it out on a save scum to check things out, and it's actually possible to get a pretty big (~100 stones) chunk of adamantine out without opening the Deadly Evil Hidden Fun Stuff zone.  However, obviously it's a form of cheating to figure out which direction to mine by save scumming.  I think that's OK, actually - the Museum is about making awesome exhibits, not dealing with deadly dwarf-killing !!HFS!!, so I'm in favor of bending the rules a bit to get better raw materials (mine the adamantine, find the chasm, etc) - but whether to actually do that is up to Squeegy and the current Curator.

... Oh, and the save scumming also confirms that the extra lava pipes I added near the end of my turn will eventually work, so the magma workshop district will light up sometime during the second year.

Atir Amnekonul, Curator
1st Granite, 1052

WE HAVE STRUCK ADAMINTINE! Was the cry, and with that a spirit flowed up from the well. It said. "I am messenger of Armok to the lesser dwarfs. He commands you to be Curator".

[Future Pic Here.]

I rummaged arround and clean uped some stone. Now I can get that oh so beautiful office! Sweetness! I can feel my brain wizzing!

From Excited Curator, Atir Amnekonul

2nd Granite

I decided to let our best artistans to begun working on the wall... however, I will only accept the best Alunite and decided to wait. I also noted unproductive farms and told them to work. I'm sure I am doing the right thing but I just have to ask the former Curator.

We have hunted all of the Central Swamp extinct! We will have to get an alternative meat source.

I have continued the explorationary shafts.

8th of Granite

I've decided on storage rooms for the Jewelers. They will contain uncut and cut gems and also a varied pile for encrusted items. I ordered the miners to start at once.

You only need to keep 2 or 3 farm plots running, and that will still be way more than is needed to feed a fortress this size.  I built a lot of extra stuff (like the huge food stockpile) so later curators would be able to focus more on making exhibits.  The extra plots are mainly so you can grow pig tails and dimple cups for the weaver and dyer while still making food, and possibly grow extra food for trading away.

Basically, if you just want to make sure the dwarves have enough food and booze, you can leave all but 1 of the plots fallow.

15th Granite

As the bloody elves arrived I noticed some of our cut gems are Exeptional. I decided to place them in the Museum.

(where is the ORIGINAL original museum?)

17th of Granite

Our Jewlers have finished the gems and... What's this? As I walk with a bin of goods I can see them at the entrance smoothing the wall... We found the effect pleasing and bid them to continue. I can imaging a smoothed museum... although no engravings, as those just break the studious and peaceful nature of the Museum.

19th of Granite
Theif! Defend the Horde! A kobald's cooming! Yelled the wood chopper. "You have an Ax". 'Oh' he looked at his ax and ran back to station at the bridge.

22th of Granite
My how time flies. Now finally my friends will trade. We are interested with the dye and some other goods. Although what we offer is somewhat lackluster as he horde the best of our treasures to the Museum.

24th of Granite

All the things those tree huggers brought are CLOTH! I will try to get that Elk of theirs but... CLOTH?

The exeptional item is the Bin. I think we can place other items in there to show in the Museum. In the meen time I will place it on the museum and watch as they look at the exeptional bin.

The Khin blasted heat today before the hatch is closed... Magma is working its way but the volcano is being depleated.

27th of Granite
The Magma is working! I have called one of my friends to make an Eletrum bar. However, we will make some gold one to peserve our namesake.

Simplely LOL. I took a break. Granite is the First month of a year.

Get ready for another month of.... MUSEUM!

2nd Slate

The Manson commisioned to patch up the walls after the Gold Vein (not all! just to patch those without any gold left) has walled himself in! He bawled as he pounded the walls until I arrived. "Holy!" "Git me outa here!" "I'll get my pick"

Needless to say the Manson will NEVER patch a wall again.

8th Slate

Mason Risen Stibmerkadol's savor, Degel Sanadducim, organized a party. I just want to see it for a month or two...

22 Slate

Nothing interesting happened. They kept on going. However, we ran out of bags so our Glass Statues can be started. I plan to use them to line the corridor for some area.

23th Slate

Praised be Armok! First signs of Immigration! We shall wait and see who will join us in our delightful museum.

25th of Slate

It seems the end of the Immigrant train is here. I tallied them Up.

Bowyer
Stoneworker
Hunter
Armourer
Bone Carver
Weaver
Fisherdwarf
Milker
Butcher
Dyer
Herbalist
Mechanic
Pump operator
Peasants X4

Total we now have a population of 33. I will recruit the Hunter as there are no animals left. But I think that another should join his squad. And I have decided, he will be Marksdwarf.

Congrats Milker! You been conscripted because of you utter uselessness.

Note to all, no pictures until much later. Sorry, just the way I am and the way my Parents restrain me.
