Our smelters are back up to full capacity.  To celebrate one of Silu's dwarves took it upon himself to make an iron weapon rack.  He busied himself the better part of a day scurrying around the compound grabbing bits and pieces from here and there.  He even managed to find a cave lobster shell somewhere down in the food storage.  It took him a few days labor but what he turned out is simply amazing:

It looks like he made an image of me surrounded by the workers, and in the background all the slaves are being led here.  I will see if he is willing to make other works to send back to the mountainholmes.

The work has started on the limestone block walls of the palace complex, the elephants have moved on and we were able to recover the corpse of the hunter.  It is hard to think three years have passed since I first came here.

So do you need someone to claim a dwarf in the fortress, or is this for personal use?

:-p

hmmm.. it dosen't help the innuendo that the last name of the one i need claimed is Manymines.

I was actually trying to write it in a way that didn't have innuendo but it looks like I failed.  So yes, I need someone to claim a dwarf in the fortress, one that is female.

Dosar Moststroke's wagon rumbled across the shrubland.

Sadabachrulber snuck from shrub to shrub.

Dowar Moststroke's wagon rumbled down a small incline.

Sadabachrulber wriggled through some grass.

Dosar Moststroke's wagon rumbled closer to the wall of the compound.

Sadabachrulber scampered from stone to stone.

Dosar Moststroke's wagon rumbled around the corner and hit a bump.

A resounding popping noise and 2 loud cracks rang out from under the wagon.

Dowar Moststroke's wagon rumbled into the compound, bits of kobold stuck to the wheels.

*************************************
So i've never seen this before, but a kobold appears to be run over by a wagon.

Elections!? They held elections for mayor?!  By some obscure outdated law I've been 'unseated' by one of the new recruits.. his name escapes me, something Tomescaled I think.  Most of the camp wasn't even informed of the election, myself included, I'm sure that Dwarfaholic is behind it..

It means little, but is still a slap in the face and shows me that there are Dwarves in this camp who can't be counted on if push comes to shove.

One of the slave wenches gave birth recently, we aren't certain which of the slaves is her partner, but we will watch her very closely.  I am uncertain what to do with the child.  It seems wrong to let a baby be raised by these heathen Lean Wire dwarves.  Perhaps it would be possible to raise it as a proper dwarf.

-= The Battle of Wheelmark Quarry=-
Part I

25th Hematite, Early Summer of 1053

Boss Vactor and Mayor Momuz Tomescaled glared at one another as they slowly circled one another inthe courtyard of the compound.  Boss Vactor's grey eyes blazed fiercely, flushing to a brilliant blue, his eyes were like blades searching for flesh.

The Mayor was stocky even for a dwarf, with Oily black hair, sooty eyes and a swarthy complexion.  He had known that if he was ever going to have any clout in this compound he had to take Boss Vactor head-on, but had not been prepared for this.  It had seemed simplistic when they had planned it all out, but now being stuck in this moment things seemed to be getting out of control.

It hadn't taken long for Boss Vactor to find out that the Mayor was belaying his orders for the compound, and had come to confront the Mayor in the meeting area in the center of the compound.  Mayor Tomescaled's voice betrayed his nerves when it shook as he told him that he was no longer in charge of the compound, and that his duties only included trading with the merchants.  The table the Mayor was sitting at had been flipped, and he had been knocked over backwards out of his chair, rolling nimbly onto his feet.

The air itself seemed to hold its breath as the dwarves of the compound watched silently.

Like a taut rope being cut the alarm call from the roof broke the tension "GOBLINS! AT THE QUARRY!

****************************

Zon Sealrelic hoisted the marble boulder up the final stair, the sweat dripping down her arms.  Aban Spiralstake's head popped up from the staircase, helping to push the boulder up over the lip.  Zon turned and put her shoulder into pulling the rope.  The boulder began to slide along the ground when she heard a "Thwup" behind her as the boulder suddenly stopped moving.  She turned around, and to her horror saw Aban crumple over, a goblin arrow protruding from his torso. Her scream was punctuated "Thwup-Thwup" as two more arrows seemed to appear sticking out from his chest.

The goblin swordsmen seemed to come from nowhere as Zon turned and ran. They quickly finished off Aban, and had little trouble catching the exhausted slave as she tripped and stumbled towards the compound.  The goblin blades rang out as Zon was hacked to pieces.

****************************
"But we haven't been trained!!" Mayor Tomescaled's protests fell upon deaf ears as Boss Vactor threw him by the cuff of his neck out the door to the compound.  His unit members were hastily putting on their breastplates and helms, hefting their wooden shields as they formed up on the Mayor's flanks.  They would have looked comical with their bare legs and arms if the situation had been less deadly.

"Perhaps you will learn today that a soldier's time is better spent sparring than politicking!"  Boss Vactor shouted casually over his shoulder as he went back into the compound.

The mayor steeled himself as he turned to face his men. He raised his shield and set off at a pace towards the quarry, a guttural battle cry flying from his mouth, his soldiers in hot pursuit.

****************************

Silu was deep in the quarry with the mechanic Ducim Helmedcudgel checking the flux qualities of the local limestone when the screaming started.  They quickly ran towards the stairwell to find the handful of slaves that had been working in the quarry were gathered at the base of the stairwell horrified at the trickle of blood that was gradually making its way down the stairs.

The shouts of goblin warcries echoed down, tracing the same path the blood was taking.  It was too much to bear for one of the slaves by the name of Ezum Perfecthammer, lost to her panic she darted up the stairwell in a dash for the compound.  Silu held back the rest, signaling them to remain silent.  Ezum's cries of pain drifted down the stony staircase with a surge of goblin whooping.  Silu's eyes searched upwards, his ears strained to hear. If he could only see...

Oh damn, I hope my dwarf is skilled enough with a pick so could kick some of those goblin asses before being hacked into pieces.

...He has a pick with him right?

-= The Battle of Wheelmark Quarry=-
Part II

Nako Watchfulwitches flitted from tree to tree, slender, even for a goblin he was able to find hiding places behind nearly anything that grew.  Looseing arrow after arrow he watched as the fight before him unfolded.  As his swordgoblins were pushed backwards he pulled a special arrow from his quiver, smiling to himself as he aimed at a small lump some distance away, he adjusted slightly to the side of it and let loose.

**************************

Atu Orderstole lay in wait under a mat of dried grass, he and his lashers had snuck to their positions in the twilight hours of the morning, waiting for hours for this moment.  The swordsgoblin's diversion seemed to be working as the dwarves exposed their flank to his position.  The ferocity of the dwarven leader had driven the swordsgoblins onto their heels as the dwarves pressed the attack.

"Thwup!" A white fletched arrow suddenly appeared sticking out of the ground mere inches away from his face.  He would have preferred the signal to have been given to him with a bit more room for error, but now was the time for battle, not goblin-squabbles.  Atu thumbed his hammer and burst forth from his hiding spot, his Lashers close behind.

**************************

Silu stood listening, eventually he heard what he was listening for, dwarves! Their shouts and the thumping of wooden shields banging against iron was a welcome sound.  He started for the staircase, but paused, thinking better he wrested a pick from one of the still stunned mining slaves, and along with Ducim, barreled up the staircase.

**************************

Mayor Tomescaled's spirits were lifted as the swordgoblins seemed to break rank, his wooden shield had proven surprisingly effective at turning the blades of the goblins, all of which were now quite bloodied from shield bashes.  His recruits were proving themselves, and if anything his political position was being solidified by this military victory.

His elation was cut short from behind him a hammer swung upwards, catching the mayor under the ribs. The hammer was swung with such force by the goblin at the other end that it tore upwards through his body.  His ribs broke in quick succession, and as the hammer caught his armpit he was thrown upwards into the air.  Mayor Tomescaled was dead before he hit the ground.

His men halted in mid action, unable to quite realize what was happening.  The hammergoblin, effectively disarmed, roared at the dwarves and stalked away as lashergoblins rushed forwards on either side.  As their whips began to circle and crack the first of the recruits turned to flee.

*********************************

Silu's warcry rang out as he exploded from the quarry entrance, his pick a flurry as he assaulted the lashergoblins from behind.  The recruits quickly rallied and began pushing back into the fray.

Ducim was close on Silu's heels when he heard a faint bow twang, he paused and turned to see a bowgoblin taking aim at Silu's back, Ducim dove forward as the arrow shaft sped towards his friend. In an instant he was laying on the ground at Silu's feet, the fletching of an arrow protruding from his chest.

Silu's face was bloodied from the goblin whips, but still he pressed on, pain seemed to scream out from his body where the whips had ripped bits and pieces of his flesh, but his firm resolve pushed him forward.  His pick bit through the goblin armor as it sailed through the air.  Both sides faltered as the evenly matched units piled wounds upon each other, but still the goblin whips cut and tore at him.  He spun to face a goblin behind him, embedding his pick deep into the goblins belly.  The goblin grabbed ahold of the pick handle, and a well placed lash landed directly across Silu's face.

********************************

Nako Watchfulwitches withdrew from the fighting, they had accomplished what they had come here for.  He quickly made off in the direction Atu Orderstole had left in, leaving the remaining goblins to fend for themselves.

********************************

The battle swayed back and forth, wounded goblins and soldiers quitting the field until there remained only one dwarf. Silu stood amongst the piles of corpses, his pick still spinning about his body, no enemies remained, but still he did not quit.

When the dwarves ventured out to retrieve the wounded, and bury the dead they found Silu, exhausted but alive, his face covered in blood, his eye sockets torn to pulp by the goblin whip.

In all 6 dwarves died, the mayor and 2 recruits, and 3 of the slaves working the quarry, 2 dwarves were injured. Ducim lived, but languishes with a pierced lung and broken lower body.

4 goblins were killed, and most of them wounded, able to crawl away only due to the severe losses incurred to both sides.

edit:ugh stupid period instead of a comma...

What? He lost both of his eyes but still managed to kick all those goblin asses? Fucking sweet. Too bad he will probably die of his wounds or something, unless he has amazingly high toughness that I don't know about?

Yeah, so I had drafted Silu and Ducim to keep him from fleeing the quarry, but he took it upon himself to come running out to fight, which was actually probably what saved the recruits from annihilation.  I don't think he'll die of his wounds, he's up and about, passing out every few seconds, but he's not bedridden, which is generally a death sentence in this fort. (I guess once a dwarf loses something completely they don't rest to try to heal it)  Regardless, Silu just got quite a bit more badass.

I guess the barracks I had designated wasn't wide enough for the recruits to spar, because they had no military skills when i sent them into battle.  They had just stood around gabbing with each other, which explains why their captain was elected mayor.

Elfchopper sat silently in her bare walled room, her wardogs curled up near the door..  She was very slowly piecing together the events of the previous day.  When she had seen Silu being brought back to the compound, his face bloodied and eyes gone, she knew that it was important and she strained to figure out what it meant.  When she was reasonably certain of her conclusion she removed a crumpled and weathered piece of parchment from her pocket.  She scanned the list of names, pausing at Strife's, a thick black line drawn through it.  It seemed so long ago that Strife had died...

Pulling herself out of her thoughts she continued down the list to Silu's name.  She dragged her piece of coal across his name, leaving a black line over it.  Four names remained on her list: Vactor, Ricemastah, Pingles, and Dwarfaholic.

She sighed a heavy sigh of relief, she had taken a liking to Silu, and was glad to know he was not the traitor.  'Perhaps it was more than a liking..' she thought to herself

Where ever I go, silence follows, the chattering of the dwarves ceases the moment I enter a room.  I have not been approached with problems, or questions about details since the events of yesterday.  The slaves keep their heads down, the overseers resolve problems amongst themselves.  Ducim's moaned throughout the night, clinging to life, I can see no way that he will survive, his lung is punctured and slowly fills with blood.  His fits of coughing produce a bloody spittle and untold misery to Ducim.

Elfchopper has been tending to Silu's wounds, bringing him herbs she has collected in the surrounding wilderness to help heal the gaping holes in his face.  For Silu's part he has been stalwart, demanding today that Elfchopper take him to his forge before falling back into unconsciousness.  He proved himself a hero yesterday, and has more than earned a rest from his work.

I was surprised at the goblin's willingness to slaughter the slaves that were their former allies.  It would seem they are either not interested in liberation or are unable to discriminate the dwarven races.  The capture of two Goblin theives during the attack was not discovered until the cleanup effort was launched, a series of cage traps had been triggered on the opposite side of the compound from the battle.  Perhaps the battle itself had been a diversionary tactic to cover the thieves entrance to the compound.  I will keep the goblins prisoner in the hopes that we can find an interpretor to allow an interrogation.
