T_T I can't believe this.
I didn't know they had a whole board for community games and I couldn't find this thread until now. I thought the thread was destroyed.
(Plus I was away for the easter, sorry for the wait)

I'll finish it now and pass the save on.

The fires are mostly out (I even build an emergency pump for taking care of future fires), but I'm having problems with goblins slaughtering dwarves at the moment. I'll get it working.

EDIT: I tell you, this is one bloody winter.

Glad to hear from you even if we're encountering, uh, difficulties.  Good luck sorting 'em out and besides, the population was getting unwieldy anyway.

You could say that. I'll keep the population over 50 and get them to calm down. I'll shave off my beard if I can't keep that population quota.

EDIT: Uploading it now.

22nd Moonstone, 1054, Early Winter

We had more goblin attacks today. Our military was out of commission, so I ordered everyone inside, hoping that the traps would take care of the invaders. It wasn't until the screaming started that anyone remembered the prisoners tied up on the cliff. Among them was our captain of the guard. Armok damned those idiots.

28th Moonstone, 1054, Early Winter

One of the children went berserk today. I'm sure he would've made a fine warrior someday, but it wasn't to be. He happened to be in the statue gardens at the time. With four dogs.
They tore him apart before anyone knew what happened. I heard that the burial crew found fourteen pieces.

6th Opal, 1054, Mid-Winter

The madness continues. One of our masons has gone insane, while a recruit reportedly went berserk. While the recruit was promply shot to pieces, I imagine the mason will help himself to a hundred-foot tango.

God damn that cat. It piddled on my bed again.

7th Opal, 1054, Mid-Winter

I was correct. The mason is now splattered all over the construction site. Looks like our tower got a proper baptism of blood. I'm pretty sure I can name at least one god who would be pleased by that.

It's safe to say the cat won't be bothering me again. Apparently the guard did take issues with me beating it into submission, and now want me punished. Oh well. Must make a good example. I'll have the clerks visit me in my captivity.

22nd Opal, 1054, Mid-Winter

Another child was lost today, the same way as the previous one. Seventeen pieces this time. A baby just fell in the chasm. I'm looking for his parents.

24th Opal, 1054, Mid-Winter

The last of our experienced marksmen took his own life today. Jumped into the chasm he'd worked so hard to make safe. It's unfortunate we're unable to bury him properly.
In my frustration I may have kicked a nearby chair. I didn't mean to kick it that hard, but the damn thing broke. Long story short, I now have a one way ticket to beatingtown.

2nd Obsidian, 1054, Late Winter

The first overseer, NPComplete Bomrekostar, has died. We all mourn his loss.

7th Obsidian, 1054, Late Winter

Kivish Tekkudgan is tantruming yet again. I recommend that everyone keep a keen eye on this guy. He's pretty explosive. I'm having him imprisoned for everyones safety.

16th Obsidian, 1054, Late Winter

At last, things are slowly winding down. Light at the end of a long dark tunnel. Hardly anyone's fighting anymore, and I'm finally able to get an accurate population count. 55 dwarves still stand, more or less. We numbered 92 when the dragon struck. It's hard to imagine. I was down at the boneyard, below the tower. It truly is depressing. I fear that soon the dead will outnumber the living.
At least the engravings and statues I ordered for the sleeping hall seem to be paying off.

21st Obsidian, 1054, Late Winter
Kivish Tekkudgan stopped eating, and perished soon after. I'm sort of glad that he's gone. He was nothing but trouble.

22nd Obsidian, 1054, Late Winter
A child went insane, presumably after becoming an orphan, and took the hundred-foot leap. Population is down to 53, now.

1st Granite, 1055, Early Spring
Today my time as overseer has finally come to an end. Even though it has been a year it feels like decades. I've seen more than enough tragedy to last a lifetime. At times it was too much for me to bear. I only hope that the next overseer will have more success.
At least the the spine of the tower stands and the farms have been moved inside. I also cut a path to some of the rooms to reduce the amount of outside traffic.

I'm relieved to see that I am not dead this time around, and that you posted a guide to the levers on the top floor.  Nice tower, too! Sorry I messed it up for you by building that top hallway so narrow.

The dead do not technically outnumber the living; it's something like 46 dead to 52 living.  Admittedly that is a close shave.  I see you wound up with a named war dog, which is totally boss, even if its owner, and that titled marksman, gave up the ghost.

It's a shame all the miners died; going to make chasm management a little trickier, that's for sure.

There are about a dozen levers still to hook up, Kogan, and I request that I be put to work at that immediately. ;p I suggest getting some butchering operations going too, unless we have some sort of stampede-of-horses defense plan I don't know about... which would be pretty cool, actually.

And we still have an insane quantity of booze, so presumably the whole fortress will just console themselves about all the deaths with alcohol.

The dragonslayer engraving is right in the main entrance hall, which is pretty sweet.  "The Clashes of Perishing" is quite an appropriate name for that engraving (and the events of your reign, too)!

Here you go, Akroma: clicky

I might get around to adding some points of interest, once I figure out how the system works.

Meh it's fixable. Not much room for anything in the tower, just made the spine to make future construction easier.

Do the dead that fell in the chasm show up anywhere? If they don't I think we cut that too close.
Totally missed out on that wardog  :D
I hope the next overseer builds some proper defenses. I spent all my time doing pointless fancy stuff like building towers and burying the dead.

Yeah. Over half of the farmers died too. Some dwarves are assigned to mining, but they suck at it.

The WAFD-lever is pretty much unconnected. I didn't do anything about it except dig out the bottom level and placing supports. I don't know how to go about collapsing the thing with the lava-tube attached. Pouring out lava would be one solution but it would have to be continually flowing for it to remain hot. Does lava replenish yet?

I had too much of dwarves butchering dwarves to worry about the growing animal population.

Yeah, that's probably because the stockpiles spent a good while as forbidden (because of all the fire and smoke). There's some pretty good stuff too, as we bought pretty much everything that the caravans brought.

Ooh missed that one. That was one of the last we made.
I was pretty disappointed at the official engravings though. I ordered engravers to start Right after we killed a freakin' dragon and we get: a square, another square and a mountain. (Oh and I forgot to engrave the walls, could the Kogan have them engraved?)

So I played around with the fortress name generator and came up with a Forgotten Realms-style Roll of Years at Chambergraves:

Year 1: Uthartekkud Mikstal (The First Picks of Ownership)

- I couldn't find anything about obsidian, so you get a generic-sounding "we built the place" year, NPComplete.

Year 2: Zutshoshotthat Umid (The Bewildering Directions of Falling)

- I think, given Dopefish's reaction to my clever plan, that this one is pretty obvious.

Year 3: Etomkast Namash (The Innocent Genius of Brews)

- Dopefish had a nice, quiet year and spent it providing us with an amazing quantity of liquor!

Year 4: Lisad Shithath (The Clashes of Perishing)

- See above.

Disputes/suggestions/etc?

I was thinking of something along the lines of Ziril Rėrith, the Fires of Chaos, but the Clashes of Perishing does have the additional appeal of being the name of our sole moment of glory. the Winter of Blood (Akath Nazush) is another that comes to mind.

Is it just me, or did nobody really follow the dictates of this fortress?

I am assigning my task to reversing this trend of very weird style of construction. no wonder why we have defense problems, almost everything is scattered around the surface!

My first task is creating the chasm.
I started by forming the real chasm at the bottom, rather then this wierd "toungue extension" it currently has. My second, to run concurrent with the first, is to totally seal up the entire place until I fix the chasm. When it's done, there will be a tower in the center, occupying the actual area of the chasm, rather then that haphazard area on the surface.
After that, I will expand the current structure we have until I have the "outside" walls of the spire done.

Whaddaya mean nobody followed the dictates of this fortress? Do you not see the thirteen story tower in the middle of the chasm?

I do admit that the workshops and the stockpiles are temporarily setup outside but that's just because there isn't any room in the inside yet. Also to make a more effective bait for dragons and other megabeasts. Also thieves.

But seriously, I'm all for building up some defenses and moving everything at least indoors if not in the chasm proper.

Although I'm a little puzzled at what you mean by tongue extension. Do you mean the top entrance or what?
And can you post some schematics of your plans, please?

The chasm is large, consisting of almost 2 full screens. The actual "Chasm" space deminishes because as a first task, it wasn't brought to the surface like it should. That means your "tower" consists of the entirity of the chasm. When I am done, this problem will be fixed, and it will be less a needle-thin tower, and more of a fortress-spire, stretching up out of the depths of hell to smite the goblin foes.

Unfortunately, my external wallwork has just been interrupted by some blasted ambushers. I'm not sure the value of the fortress since there is not a single dwarf remaining with appraisal skill, but I suspect it will be two or three waves, and the four remaining sane dwarf military will be hard-pressed to fight them off. I'm in for a nasty battle to just secure the dwarven borders. After that, a new wave of tantrums. After that, the very dangerous work of getting the chasm exposed. Already one dwarf has been lost on that grand work.

As long as people build on top of my walls, strait up, then the chasm-fortress will be truth instead of fiction. I am going to start building bedrooms at the "ground" level, and work my way up from there.

Someone else can replace the random stone with obsidian blocks. There isn't enough solid fortress for me to slow down the work of making a solid fortress to place the kind of stone that is needed.

By the way, I am changing the central tower. Instead of 5x5 room with a staircase on each corner, I am making it a 3x3 room that consists entirely of staircases.

I will let others work on the fine details of the appearance of the insides of the tower. I will work hard to get the shell built, as well as an external wall that can ensure that small attacks won't defeat us. I'll probably excavate alot of the mountain for stone as well...
