Maybe you should load up the save and see if you're right about that? Cuz if you are that'd rock.

EDIT: I missed a few of your posts, fleacircus. Kind of pisses me off that my miner is now stuck on a bed. I really would have left the pits of evil alone, considering that they weren't doing anything at all to hurt us. Couldn't you have used someone else?   :(

Runs fast. Digs fast. Best dwarf for the job. And I think he was down to a yellow wound at the end of my year, so chin up, little overseer!  I mean what was he gonna do otherwise, get a little bit more legendary at mining?

I wish I'd recorded how awesomely he escaped death, I think you would have been proud. Valter lept out of the main tunnel to the doorway just before the blast of fire would have hit him full-force. If you'd seen how awesome it was I don't think you'd be pissed.  I tried to express that in my little story.

Ok, that makes it much better. I had thought that his leg had been burnt off, so that he would be permanently be bedridden.

There's actually an easy way of seeing burning progress. If you loo[k] at an object on fire, you can see the stages of the fire. Since there presumably isn't code for burning things yet, all fire does is wear things out. So, after time, the burning charcoal will go from !!charcoal!! to !!xcharcoalx!! to !!XcharcoalX!! to !!XXcharcoalXX!!, and then finally disappear.

There's another step, !!xXcharcoalXx!!.  Take it from me, I carefully observed the deterioration of a burning beetle while I was throwing it at people.

Sucks that the dungeon master had an "accident."  Definitely an unfortunate development when you lose one of two nobles who is at all useful.  Some people don't like the hammerer, but take it from me, there would be no Chambergrave without ours.

Hey folks, I'll get started on my turn come this weds, I have my last final then. Fleacircus, by any chance were you following my idea (although yours was executed more smoothly then mine.) by any chance?

Edit:
I've had a look at the map for now, and took it on a test run to see how the fps is. 10 fps. I'll weather through though.

I've had a look see on what I could do to leave my own little mark on the fortress, and I think I have a few goals in mind that I'll list real quick.

Goals:
-Mechanical Room. We have a lot of available water, I'm thinking about siphoning some of it off and begin generating power. Although I don't know what it could be used for, I think having an excess supply of power on hand could be useful to any future overseers.
-Demons. They bug me. I figure I'd create a long hallway of upright spears set to "maim". However I feel that the bigger problem is how to stop the water from flooding the pits because I don't see any control over it (floodgates or bridges). However this problem may be solved with my next idea...
-Cistern. I usually create large tanks of water that can be used for future projects. In this case, I think I'd create a drain to empty the pits into the cistern, and then build a Noble burial chamber atop the cistern. (Burial Islands)
-Tower enlargement. Why not go up?
-Training. A number of dwarves are fodder dwarves, I'd like to pump a few of the no-names up so that future overseers have a somewhat more survivable pc so they don't have to worry bout not getting their dwarf killed. Plus the huge amount of idlers is appalling.
-Castling. The outer wall is helpful, but I think that a few z lvls higher and a tower or two can add to the fortress's image. "This is your fort? A castle?" "Nooooo... the castle protects a giant spire missile aimed directed at the bowels of hell"
-Execution/Sifting chamber. This falls into the water-works project. I hate manually removing items from captured gobbos, I'd much rather toss them into a pit, stun them, have the water sweep them down a passageway lined with traps/deconstruction tools to break the goblins into component parts, and then a collection area where the bones, bits, and items wash into for the dwarves to collect.
-Bins. We need more of em. Either by wood or cheap metal, I don't care. This fort needs bins, and badly. Addressing this helps address flea's problem of clutter.

I intend to accomplish all of this by forcing EVERY dwarf to one of the related tasks. Miners will mine the suitable areas/cistern, skilled masons will work in shifts of creating blocks while the unskilled masses will assemble them. The mechanics will focus on the variety of floodgates/large floodgates, as well as the power process. I also intend to de-activate the military (the ones that I can) and draft them into the work camps. Metal-workers will focus solely on bin construction.

Thanks to the low fps I can micromanage to a fine degree. My only worry is to figure what all these damn levers do... I almost want to build a secondary level to the outer wall specifically for the trade depot, with an identifiable lever to raise the bridge. Oh well.

This all sounds a bit new-dealie to me. Or soviet russia. Oh well, we shall see. We shall see.

I like your plans, Donkringel.

I had tried to build up the spire myself, but I was distracted by mass butchery and adamantine. Feel free to actually do something with the adamantine, by the way, it's still not doing anything right now besides attracting f**k-loads of immigrants to Chambergraves.

Also, I'm fine with you dealing with the demons as long as it doesn't get my other leg burned off. *Pouts*

No, I just wanted the waterfall. I don't think I even understood your idea  :D

There are floodgates in the tunnels. You can find them with [k], they're pretty much in line vertically with the levers that control them.

Man, if I'd known you'd act this way about it, I would have walled Valter in with the thing.  ;)

Given how the cave-in code works, I suspect it's possible to set up a Wile E. Coyote system.  That is, if you mine out the entire lower level, then channel around the edges of the map (admittedly, extremely time-consuming), you might be able to have the entire map (sans the special unminable edge tiles) be supported by the spire.  When the spire is detached, everything else falls down.

Amusing to think about, anyway.

Someone, please do this.

From the Logs of Nikolai Daggerrough
1st of Granite
As the sands of time drip through the hourglass of our earth, history has seen the many rises and falls of pivotal figures, much like the dunes of the deserts. I believe I have just met such a dwarf, with eyes like the fires of our raging smelters, and the hollow laughter like the depths of our chasms. This is the story of Onkrin, the self-proclaimed Czar of Chambergrave.

He came in the night, not so much as a thief but like the presence you wake to in the morning. It is a presence that you would expect, like the call of your mother baking fresh bread, or when your father returns deep from the tunnels at the end of the day. It is a familiarity that you will always expect to be with you throughout your life, but when it leaves you, as all things must inevitably do, it leaves you hollow. Life is changed. He is change.

He carried the papers of the mountain home, proclaiming him the new leader of our people. Although our people are little more then 50, he says we will work like a nation of hundreds. He is right about this.

His first act was to relieve all dwarves of military duty, except for our mightiest champions, and a few of the guard.

“We will all build” he said, his hand raised high to silence any protests. A few of the braver dwarves tried to make a point of resistance, taking breaks or working slowly to displease our new ruler. He dealt with each one personally. There was no violence, only the deep gaze of his eyes. There was no more dissent after one had met with his gaze.

His next task was to seek me out. I know this sounds superstitious, or bizarre, but he KNEW I was within the spire, working in my workshop, building mechanisms for my fortress.

“Nikolai. You will be my voice.” This was not a question, nor command. It was a proclamation of my fate.

I did not question how this strange dwarf knew my name, but I did stare at the fires in his eyes.

“Your words will do my reign justice. Your eyes shall see the plans that I have laid out for our people, and your mind shall be able to make sense of these plans. You will be a testament to this age”

So this is where I began.

The Reign of Onkrin, the 13th Czar.

If the 13th Czar doesn't ruin the fortress, no one can.

-edit-
Does anyone know the exact number of dead we had so far? I'm too lazy to download the new save and count them.

Well if you end up doing that count, add a few more.

Our new ruler is a harsh taskmaster indeed!

Gosh darn it. You couldn't just be another overseer? I swear on my beard that if you turn this happy spire into a cesspool of autocratic dictatorship, I will be forced to take appropriate action on my turn.

EDIT: mlittle, I never specifically counted the dead, but I know there's a whole lot. I think around 3/4ths of our population is dead. During my reign it was something like 50 alive with 150 dead.

I sense a socialist revolution coming up next round ^_^
Death to the Czar! The workers must control the means of production!
