I am pretty sure the chasm creatures don't respawn.  Mine never had.  In fact, dieing without reproducing no matter what I do to them seems to be my big problem with chasm creatures... By the time I get to killing things (it takes me years to make adequate defenses), they are dead...

Chasms spawn creatures on a fairly regular basis. The frequency goes up (I believe) if you use the chasm as a dump site, because the monsters living in it don't enjoy trash being thrown into their abode.

So yeah, you'll have to figure out some way to handle that.

Personally I am voting for catapults, but we'll see what the other two rig up.

Edit: So far as the name goes, see if you can work "Chamber" in there.

This was accurate for the 2d version, but I'm fairly (not 100% as I don't get chasms very often) sure that they do *NOT* respawn in any of the 3d versions.

Yeah, a caravan killed all the chasm monsters in my first year and 10 years later I haven't seen anything, other than the named bat-man that lives way down below and never troubles nobody.

I'm already doing this with water in some insanely unproportional revenge scheme for two of my dwarves' deaths.

Sign me up.
Ready an' willing, sah!

EDIT: Oh, and my suggestion for a name is Hammereddawn (or Lewdlances, whichever)

Will you do a smaller location? For only a River and Chasm, a 3x3 is very easy to do. Given that it all has to be around the chasm, it's not like we will need more then a 3x3.

I say something that ends with 'urdim'.  You can't have a fitting chasm fortress without naming it a tower of something.

Let's see...  There's 'Oramurdim', Worldtower.  'Tathurdim', Dusktower.  Or perhaps the mighty 'Tathziril Al Shedim'.  Translates into 'Duskfire the Pinnacle of Shadows'.

EDIT: Perhaps just Al Shedim?  That sounds nice.

I recently started Shedimdodok, "Shadowclasped".
While not planning to make it a chasm fortress, it does have a suitable chasm, and I do intend to build something suitably impressive inside it (noble quarters, perhaps...that way I can drop them into oblivion with a gesture). I think the name is fitting.

@Kogam:
smaller locations will be searched today. for all that matters wee need a circular chasm and a flowing water source. Magma for late-game awesomeness, when the fortress has come to a point where we have nothing to add

@dopefish:
pop-cap at 50. Circular chasms are small, and we will only have about 17 z-levels to build the fortress in. Building a fortress that looks very nice also includes rooms that are not living space. Invasions are turned on, an elaborate defense system is part of the challenge

as for the name, I am thinking about something like Wallsky, or Stonesky

If you have two or three stone layers on the top of the chasm and you need to remove them anyway, you shouldn't worry too much about the monsters in the Chasm. With some luck they are dead after the cave-in.
