Finish and pull the lever.  It is the only honorable course of action.

Yes, it does appear I have presided over the worst massacare of dwarves since the chasm started. In fact, my entire turn appears to be one of death. Death toll so far this year: 18 prior to the "Significant Incident", 17 in the incident, for a total of 35 this year up to the summer.

So, I am assuming these are our year names
Year 1: Uthartekkud Mikstal (The First Picks of Ownership)
Year 2: Zutshoshotthat Umid (The Bewildering Directions of Falling)
Year 3: Etomkast Namash (The Innocent Genius of Brews)
Year 4: Lisad Shithath (The Clashes of Perishing)

Year 5:
I propose the following for my year:
Adil Teshkad (The Wall of Prices), since 35 dwarves is a high price indeed for a wall.

my game crashed last night, everything after the "significant incident" was lost, however, I can tell you that there wasn't any tantruming in that period.

You know, I like the baroness, but her husband is a prick. I had to stop my digging to go dig some gold for him

And the hammerer is as bad as I knew he would be.

DOH! It didn't get built correctly, and a siege began.

Fortress didn't fall, death count is up to 37 and no more, thanks to the quick actions of the Oily Planets.

I'll do you one better, I'll post the story. Contained therein is the deaths of every dwarf in this fortress, from the first to the most recent... Read on, if you dare!

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, on ascendancy of the Guardianship of Mafolmondûl.
The blood of fifty dwarves stains the ground here, and their names are Atìr Tishakfeb, Besmar Såkzulishlum, Udil Logemurem, Ast Lòrthabum, Asmel Asëntomus, 'NPComplete' Bomrekostar, Atìr Isanrigòth, ònul Rithluteshtân, Athel Kuletbesmar, Degël Sebsúrkilrud, Besmar ïngizborush, ïngiz Ritasbim, Zuntîr Koganish, Rith Tôsedfikod, Såkzul Mörulazin, Lolor Stelidnish, Solon Erushelbel, Olon Ottansazir, Kib Mebzuthsokan, Udib Munèstcilob, Shem Kosothûz, Kivish Tekkudgan, Monom Okoledëm, èzum Odshithkilrud, Domas Kivishthîdas, ïngiz Ingisharban, Sarvesh Amnekfikod, Logem Oslanbungek, Ilral Akmammosus, Amost Idenar, Likot Bergusil, Dakost Zanegzasit(Stukónmuz Edim), Zas Kedgoden, Urist Okololtar, Rigòth Cogbomrek, Rith Lòrkovest, Mûthkat Nishtosid, Kogsak Libashnulral, Vabôk Stukosbim, Fath Inethmedtob, Udil Thobtitthal, Stinthäd Kilrudzar, Thob Fikodzursùl, Sibrek Limullulâr, Cilob Dodókïngiz, Reg Inethlegon, Zuglar Limulnakuth, Goden Kibkebon, Cerol Cattenstorlut, and Goden Nïruzol. Likewise, the blood of a dragon stains the ground here, and it's name is Ötda Ongslunngure. The mingled blood has consecrated the very ground, allowing for a Guardian Spirit to come to the fortress. I was brought to guide the dwarves by the Deity Cerol, answering the prayers of 'Nahkh' Loloktost, the fourth overseer. It is my duty given by the divine craftmaker to inspire the dwarves to thrive here.
The sacred charter issued by the king of the Mountainhomes, èzum Laråblel, states that the fortress must be built inside the round chasm. The failure of the local dwarves to follow this charter issued by the one blessed by the gods to lead the dwarves causes the more fickle gods to turn their face from this place, and allow disaster to strike. I have guided the Second Overseer to become the Record Keeper of the Fortress, so as to grant the dwarves the ability to keep track of their stocks.  Most of my other charges have been guided to farm, work stone blocks, or Dig. A few are assigned to keep law and order, as the loss of so many brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, friends and lovers has cast many dwarves away from the divine guidance which is their path to prosparity. Only time can heal their wounds, and only an efficient justice system can grant the time needed, and equal number are assigned to master the crossbow, so as to defend any space that may need defending.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 1st of Granite, 1055
The Process has begun.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 11th of Granite, 1055
Mûth Fikodnomal fell to his death, taking a pick with him, as he exposed the chasm. While I might inspire dwarves to do some things, I am unable to encourage them to think them through before they start. Ducim Keskaltizöt also joins the rolls of honored ancestors, having succumed to injuries previously sustained.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 17th of Granite, 1055
A Goblin thief was sighted in the fortress, but one of the dwarves currently mining was there, and quickly turned it into mush in the newly dug tunnel. Also, the new captain of the guard, Lokum Kilrudneth, has been elected mayor of the fortress. Litast Shemkir has joined the rolls of honored ancestors, having succumed to his wounds.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 21st of Granite, 1055
Nil Oltarlimuth, Id Arakbim, Kadol Oslanokil, and Lòr Likotbûnem have all been struck down in the conflict with goblins. Several goblins arrived to test our unfinished walls. As hard as I try, I cannot get dwarves to cooperate. I am only an incoporial being and can only inspire. Several dwarves attempted to gain glory by fighting alone and were slain. Eventually a combined force arrived and chased the goblins off.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 22nd of Granite, 1055
Goblins, like any nasty problem, always come in packs. The second wave killed Tun Listkol and Bëmbul Nïngineth when they decided that rushing the goblins at the top of the stairs instead of standing back and launching arrows at them was a wise move. This brought our effective military down to two, with one running around insane. this was Unacceptable, so I encouraged the recruitment of a few more.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 24th of Granite, 1055
A third ambush has occured. Shem Tensheddatan, one of the new recruits for the military, was struck down first, followed promptly by a guard, Bomrek Othlestushat. At this point, the only Non-insane trained military dwarf, îton Stizashkadôl, leader of the Oily Planets squad, showed up and routed all the goblins in a hail of crossbow bolts, assisted by the fortress guard Goden Memadmelbil and trainee trainee of the Oily Planets squad, Momuz Febrakust.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 28th of Granite, 1055
The insane marksdwarf, Olon Kolbufut, has finally died.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 8th of Slate, 1055
The spirit of Olon Kolbufut isn't gone, and he is randomly possessing dwarves, causing them to toss animals from the top of the spire and splattering them hundreds of feet below. I fear he won't depart until our population of tame animals is significantly reduced.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 10th of Slate, 1055
We have a new appraiser. Zefon Akrulthoth has gained some skill in appraising, and as such was made the town's broker.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 11th of Slate, 1055
Another death, Onol Kilrudkamuk has died from his injuries. Our guard force is reduced to four, fitting our population of 40 perfectly.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 12th of Slate, 1055
A goblin snatcher arrived. The arrival inspired Vabôk Zatamfikod, one of the current miners. The dwarf immediatly rushed off to create an artifact.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 12th of Slate, 1055
Another dwarf dead from it's injuries. Rovod Amostzatam.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 14th of Slate, 1055
One of the many dwarven spirits around here has caused a trap to malfunction, killing a dog. I suspect the spirit of Olon Kolbufut to be responsible.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 3rd of Felsite, 1055
The Baronness ònul Bomreksholid arrived, with the Tax Collector Besmar Imsalnil and the Hammerer Zon Fikodbudam. She came with her Consort, Kogan Ustuthzim, and 23 loyal retainers. The Swordsdwarf Mebzuth Zonnil was appointed the Captain of the Fortress Guard, Replacing Lokum Kilrudneth, by order of baronness ònul. I was able to influence her to assign most of the rest of retainers to the task of constructing the wall and digging the Chasm. She did bring a few new Marksdwarves though, bringing our strength up to three squads of Marksdwarves, with each squadleader commanding three of his own. We have one experenced squad, one regular squad, and one recruit squad. The Experenced squad is the active duty squad, ready to react if a small attack comes. All three will come for larger attacks or for attacks before the walls are built. On top of the 12 Marksdwarves, there are 8 Fortress Guards and 3 Royal Guards.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 9th of Felsite, 1055
The Miner, Kulet Alisalåth, couldn't stand the fact he didn't have a large bank account, and killed himself by digging the last tile holding the support he was standing on away.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 20th of Felsite, 1055
The general worker, Zuglar Likotnïr, was struck down by gurrilla Gorillas. As such, the top experenced squad has been dispatched to put down this micro-rebellion.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 25th of Felsite, 1055
Another casualty to the Gorilla rebellion, the guard, Ingish Vabôkmörul, suffurcated on his own blood after an encounter with the Gorillas. Fortunatly, the Experenced Squad, The Oily Planets, encountered the Gorilla leader, Lanternstrangles, and shot her to death.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 1st of Hematite, 1055
The Squadleader of the Oily Planets, îton Stizashkadôl, decided to go crossbow to hand with a gorilla and failed to win. This resulted in a massive reorganization of the military, as well as the recruitment of Inod Shinbomrek.
The military consists thusly-
The Oily Planets - Veteran Squad
SL: Reg Oddomcatten, Competent Marksdwarf
TP: Ducim Taraningish, Novice Marksdwarf
TP: Inod Shinbomrek, Recruit
TP: Momuz Febrakust, Novice Marksdwarf

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 11th of Hematite, 1055
A Human Diplomat from Eripesor arrived to talk to the Baroness. She wasn't happy about not having anyplace to meet him in.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 14th of Hematite, 1055
Doom! Doom has come!
The Bronze colossus, Slasfed Specutdamso arrived with the Human caravan. I didn't sense the humans panicing, so I didn't send some dwarves to ambush them and prevent them from coming. Fortunatly, the Baroness was paniced enough to respond quickly to my influence. Almost all the dwarves are activated, and ordered to gather inside, behind the stonefall traps. The wall was almost built too!

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 21st of Hematite, 1055
A thief is taking advantage of the rampaging colossus to steal our precious materials. I have encouraged the dwarves to retreat belowground so as to have some chance of living.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 24th of Hematite, 1055
The colossus has fallen to the stone traps in the entryway. Over 20 dwarves slain. Now comes the process of counting the dead. The splinters of wood from the craftdwarf's workshop sit amongst the scattered bodyparts of the human caravan, soaking in the blood that covers the ground that lies where the walls should enclose. It will be a long time in cleaning this mess up, if we ever can.

List of dead:
Olon Athelsanád, Libash Oltarzenon, Sodel Amostbubnus, Moldath Uzolfikod, Vucar Bomrekasiz, Zan Febdeg, Kadol Urrïthmomuz(a recruit), Zasit Zuglartomus, Ilral Sibrekabod, Zefon Nishudar, Zasit Kìrarnish(a recruit), Likot Zèlernish, Shorast Vucarzuntîr, Dastot Usântekkud, Mebzuth ïtebasrer(a recruit), Inod Shinbomrek(a recruit), and Amost Zonnëlas. At least 9 other humans died, probably more.

We are down to 3 General workers, 2 Miners, 5 Farmers, and 3 Special duty workers. Four of our dwarves are bedridden from wounds recieved. Doren Kolvucar lost his wife Zasit Kìrarnish, mother to Vabôk cattenlulâr and Zasit Såkzullerteth. If Logem Udibnanir doesn't get medical attention, her husband Goden Memadmelbil will also experence a loss. For the most part, the Dwarves of this fortress have not made many friends since the dragon.

)

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 28th of Malachite, 1055
The baroness is wise, she has stood down most of our experenced military to assist in the construction of the walls.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 4th of Galena, 1055
I have inspired the trader to give up his farming duties. His only duties are now health care and trading.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 7th of Sandstone, 1055
A training accident resulted in a royal guard getting a spear through both lungs. Likot Zonnoram becomes the 36th dwarf to die this year.

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 9th of Moonstone, 1055
A force of vile darkness arrived, 16 Lasher-armed goblins. They snuck in through our back door and advanced through our fortress. îton Nitigoltar rushed outside the traps, picked up the best crossbow he could find, and started firing on the advancing goblins. He killed a few before he was struck down. The rest of the marksdwarves, infuriated by this, abandoned the platform they were using to shoot at the goblins and rushed the enemy. The furious onslaught of the dwarves drove them off.

(Recording of the Fight: http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-463-mafolmondlsiege1055
)

Kogan Loloklam, awakened spirit of Mafolmondûl, the 1st of Granite, 1056
It was a rough year, a bloody year, but some stuff was acomplished. A wall was built around the outside of the fortress, tested, found with errors, and fixed. The exterior walls of the bottom level of the eventual spire for the fortress was completed, and then the second level, and then parts of the third level. Some areas are dug out that eventually need to be dug out. The dwarves are mostly stable and working. All in all, dispite the problems, the dwarves of Mafolmondûl have survived another year. The charter still has not been met, so disaster will keep coming, but the dwarves here will meet it with the determination they have met any other challenge, with crossbows bared, and occasionally, bolts flying.

The Baroness would have gotten the title, since I really favored her, but right at the end she pissed me off with her demands of Nickel Silver, so I rewrote as a "Spirit" instead, which was an effective fallback in roariron  ;).

Where on earth did gorillas come from? I was not expecting any dangerous wildlife.  Just our luck, I guess.  I'll take a look around tomorrow and post some comments, unless Flea's started us on updates for his turn.  Good luck, incidentally!

Kogsak made her way through the sleeping hall, passing rows of beds and soothing engravings, and was nearly to the end of it before she realized a crowd had gathered just beyond.  Many paths through the fortress intersected there at a bend, and dwarves on all sorts of duties carrying various burdens would usually cross paths there. But none were passing through with a nod and a grunt today. Some had even put down their tools and burdens.  Many were shouting, gesticulating, accusing each other... the noise echoed through the hallway, and Kogsak did not know how she could have missed it outside.

She sighed, wondering if by the end of this dwarves would be in chains, if this yelling and strife would only be stopped by the terror of another attack.  She saw her husband amongst the crowd, and exchanged a worried look with him. As the voices shouted she wondered where her son was, who had been acting very unusual lately and in fact she had not seen in days.

As was common lately, the dwarves were arguing with anger and strife, about the Wall.

"Four years, no defenses! I tell you today is the true beginning of this settlement! We will command the Canyon, and then we can do whatever we like."

"Eat your beard, elf-friend. Where were you when the dragon came? Dwarves like you should be tossed down a chasm!"

"Both of you get tossed! I've buried more friends than hairs in your beard."

Kogsak tensed, seeing the several faces in the crowd red with fury, wondering who would tantrum first, who might be killed next, would they kill each other now, destroy themselves with recriminations, kill whoever the goblins and dragons and colossi left alive?

"Everyone quiet!" came the shrill voice of a child. The voice was haunted, not right, it was her son.

"It's the possessed child," some whispered, and were quiet. Kogsak's heart knocked against her ribs.

"Listen to me!" the child said, and a hush fell as he climbed on top of a pile of rock. He was covered head to toe in blood and mud, and though it was not obvious he was otherwise naked. There was a wildness in his eyes, and he held over his head a scepter that gleamed with gold, wood, bones, jewels, it seemed crazy but was clearly a gift from the gods.  And even though it had no spikes to menace, many dwarves were awestruck.

"Behold, Braidhand the Howl of Cover! Behold the scepter granted to me by Likot, the Crystal of Avalanches! And hear the words given to me!"

The child waved the scepter. "The wall is done.  Build no more fortifications, for no dwarf will walk them. For they protect nothing. Raise the bridge! We shall not trade this year."

Many dwarves grumbled and seemed about to shout, but more dwarves hushed them, feeling that a change had arrived, that some tide was turning.

"Every workshop, every trading post, every stockpile, all outside must be broken down, moved indoors, or forgotten.  No new thing may be built outside!  We are no surface scratchers, no soil-dwarves. Tell me who among you came here – who came to Chambergrave, the chasm fortress, who came here to toil under the day-star? Who among you?"

"None of us!" many shouted, several times.

"Who came to Chambergrave to die under the feet of creatures of air and fire?"

"None of us!"

"And who doubts that our shameful surface-dwelling has led to the deaths?"

"None of us!"  "It would have been better to have starved!"

Here the dwarves began shouting oaths, spitting curses at the world outside. They fell silent again when the crazed, blood-soaked child continued his rant. "We will build the chasm-spire, and we will dwell within it.  By the end of this year, I swear it must be so, by Winter's time we must all sleep within the chasm, and those not in when the doors shut must die in sunlight!"

Here the dwarves began to cheer and swear great oaths or mutter how this was all according to schedule anyway, or argue bitterly it was too soon, too soon, but they were interrupted and got quiet and troubled as the possessed child finished his speech.

"And nothing of the outside world shall be our need. And we shall some day travel into the chasm, we shall all, every one of us, fall down.  And the spire shall take us deep into the earth away from this un-dwarvenly surface world, away from the day-star, down into the depths were our forgotten ancestors and the gods await us, and we shall walk with them, and dwell with them, those chosen among us to reach the world of the gods."

Some of the dwarves were troubled, because this was not the first time they'd heard of such madness. Many of the newer dwarves thought it was nothing more than a dire joke. We'll all plunge into the abyss, some day, ha-ha. But other dwarves merely smiled grimly and one of them barked "You heard the child. Back to work!"

Kogsak sat on a nearby bed and sobbed.
