1st Hematite,
Right. I got a nice flagon of river spirits to buckle me up.

I'm relegating all clerical duties from PTTG to Rice temporarily as the bugger won't stop running to an imaginary meeting and the managerial queue is very, very long.

It is difficult trying to find a location for the slums. I did find an oddly incomplete, yellow mass grave lying underneath one of the housing districts. But while it may look pretty, the entryways are pathetically small and hard to get to. I may have to designate a spot outside the fortress for this low-cost-housing estate. It wouldn't really matter. These bums are nothing more than disposable meat shields anyway.

There's a microline lever in the way of my plan to build it. I hope it doesn't control anything important.

p.s: I personally gave the two remaining military brawlers steel warhammers today with little notes attached: "Use these or be downsized."

2nd Hematite,
PTTG is still running around trying to find a meeting even though he no longer works for the office. He's probably doomed to insanity. A pity, as he was seen in many eyes as a triple legendary dwarf. I've asked the mayor to stop brewing and cooking and try to talk some sense into the fool.

Rice is barely keeping up with the work orders. A pity as well, as I've had the royal guards deliver three more stacks of orders for him to approve.

I also found a clothier who had the gall to run around without a proper job. Citing "I wunna be a h-h-hauler sir. The clothes factory s-s-smells bad and there's nuh b-b-breaks!" I stationed him for permanent clothesmaking AND tanning.

3rd Hematite,
I stopped by the hammerer's bedchambers (the one with ten locks and seven chains) to ask how he was doing. I only heard whimpering and sobbing. I told him to cheer up as I got the masons to install a nice statue in his dining room. I also told him that I considered letting him out but those locks and chains were very intimidating.

p.s: I found some strange block formations outside of the windmill-pod-thing. Looks like someone tried to write something in the ground, but decided to fill it back up.

7th Hematite,
I found the mechanics lounging about in some corner. They told me they weren't resting. Only thinking about how to best defend the fort. I had them place some 50 new stonefall traps at any place I could think of.

8th Hematite,
That moron! PTTG finally stepped out of his blundering stupor. It turned out that all he wanted to do was give "work suggestions" to the mayor. Work suggestions huh? I'll give him work suggestions...

p.s: Caught the two platonic purple con artists. Their death will be long and slow.

9th Hematite,
The mayor wants a clear glass window in his room. I told him to bugger off and continue making those biscuits.

10th Hematite,
Good news! The slums have finally been mined out. It may look like a giant hole in the wall now, but they will soon be infested with peasant scum, cockroach, and feces alike by year end.

I have ordered the labourers to begin smoothing out the area (even a slum must match its surroundings) and the masons to put in the partitions. The carpenters are set to mass production of beds. I have also commissioned a grand statue of a pick to be placed in the middle of the slums, bearing our grand motto: "work or die".

12th Hematite,
Yet another of the peasantry wants to voice out his silly opinions about labour to the mayor. I hope he is prepared for the consequences of stupidity.

Also, I found a tanner's workshop and a leatherworking workshop lying about at the far reaches of the fortress, clogging up the arteries. Decommissioned.

13th Hematite,
Humans have arrived. They bring many wagons. I looked through our stocks (graced to me by PTTG, who I had recount everything by hand) and found that we have two barrels of golden salve as well as a barrel of giant cave spider venom. We also have an abundance of mugs.

15th Hematite,
Who ordered so many animal traps?

16th Hematite,
The place is officially mug free. Got a huge amount of various items from the humans including two anvils, too much food, barrels, wood, metals, and so on and so forth. Oh, they brought over 150 pieces of cow cheese for us. No idea why, but I bought them all anyway. I need more cooks.

p.s: The mandatory rest area has been repainted an interesting hue.

17th Hematite,
I had the aboveground farm fallowed for all seasons to reduce the farmer work load and transferred some of the farmers to cooking and brewing duties. The slums are practically finished, and the miners were getting lazy again, so I had them dig out rooms for me (the ghost of the duchess is inhabiting my current room).

27th Hematite,
The "Duchess" (i.e: trapped purple thing) mandated the construction of three platinum items from within her little hole. I'm betting that she'll die before the mandate expires.

28th Hematite,
I thought I'd give a walkthrough of the labour district:

As you can see, it's been designed with efficiency in mind. Downstairs (not pictured) is home to significantly large furniture stockpiles and furniture stockpiles. There are also a number of mason's workshops downstairs and two jewelers. Also notice zero idlers.

p.s: The hammerer has been hunting for small animals for awhile. He is apparently unaware that I dug a small hole to see through and observe his actions.

4th Malachite,
The fool PTTG is in another meeting with the mayor again about labour duties. Little does he know that I have the mayor under my payroll so all his bickering will be for naught.

8th Malachite,
Hammerer has starved to death. There's a very nice steel hammer sitting in that room but I wasn't joking when I said those locks and chains were intimidating. By the way, now PTTG is conducting his own meetings with some armoursmiths.

Also, there are a lot of bone bolts lying around. I guess since I forbade the craftsdwarves from making anything useless, they turned to making bolts instead.

17th Malachite,
Slums completed today. Here's a picture. It fits 47 hapless twerps and should be enough for a long while. I've moving the work force to constructing my chambers as there's nothing left that really needs to be done.

23rd Malachite,
Found a lot of incomplete masonry projects lying here and there, so I've ordered the masons to complete them as best as I think the original creators intended. Some of these include residential apartments with gaping holes in the walls, guard outposts with half-finished ceilings, and the like.

24th Malachite,
Some kindred soul cleaned up all the vomit in the mandatory rest area. An impressive task.

7th Galena,
The Mayor is throwing a tantrum. Apparently he didn't like that I completely ignored his desire for clear glass windows. At the same time, PTTG is trying to have a meeting with him. I'm considering locking them both inside the room.

9th Galena,
The "Duchess" and her consort are dead. Long live execution!

10th Galena,
Someone's been dripping horse fat all over the hallways. It's pretty disgusting and I'm suspecting the disgruntled mayor.

22nd Galena,
There was a copper tomb lying hidden in one corner, unassigned. So I had it assigned to Haley aka Newb's lover. Construction on my chambers is going much faster than anticipated. At this rate, I'd have to design a swimming pool for the labourers to be occupied.

1st Limestone,
I'm afraid this place will need a new mayor soon as the old one is intent on jumping into the lava as he constantly crosses the drawbridge into my chambers. Food and drink have been brought in, as well as the necessary furniture for my use. I do not think it is too extravagant as I deserve some respite from the hectic stupidity of this external business. A simple office, a good bedroom, a nice dining room and a tomb for the future are all that I desire.

Two more seasons and I think I can retire to whoever joyfully takes up my glorious work.

----------
I really don't know what else to make the dwarves do. Everything is running very smoothly and there aren't any shortages of any sort. Except for the mayor, and a few dwarves intent on attending meetings constantly, there aren't any problems. Defenses have been boosted dramatically by way of traps and the full armouring of every single military dwarf and guard. If someone wants to restart the military (for god knows what reason), there are a LOT of bone bolts stockpiled by the entrance.

Any ideas? It takes like, 15 minutes for these guys to fully mine out, smooth, and decorate a 30x30 area.

xpcynic: It wasn't that bad. Kept me occupied anyway. The person coming after me will probably have hell of a lot worse time trying to figure out what to do with so many miners and engravers.

Duke: If we make coins now, the lag will be unbearable! And this vault is too far away from the forges for it to be safe from being claimed. Also, I gave up trying to figure out which lever did what and I don't dare to pull any. I did deconstruct a microline lever by the entrance though.

Rice: Your title was waaaay too long. Had to shorten it. Same goes for Elitay. I'll try and upload the map when I'm done as I left a few surprises for my successor.

Coins? I merely wanted masterpiece thongs and coffers covered with thousands of cut glass gems to fill that vault.

And the copper tomb was MY tomb!

 Time to make Duke disgruntled!

Did you know that the in-game Duke was always disgruntled? He didn't like that his dining room was poor (the overland temple thing). When I checked, you only designated around 10% of the temple to be the dining room. Intentional?

I became impatent about the progress of construction, and started doing everything from the left to right as more celing tiles were made.

And he was always angry that the overlords of previous years were treating his friends poorly! For the People!

1st Limestone,

I'm not sure whether to take this as a good or bad omen.

The season's goals are as follows:
1. Complete my chambers
2. Wait for something to happen

A small status report:
- Wealth has more or less doubled since my coming in; now at slightly more than 2 million.
- Food and drink has also more or less doubled, at 4124 total consumables.
- The population is 143. 2 immigrants, 6 deaths, 4 births. Net total is unchanged since my coming in.

Misc:
- Animal population is nearly nonexistent in comparison with the starting amount.
- The military has been reduced dramatically.
- The number one source of metal is iron (melted from goblins), followed by copper.
- Wood is still abundant, but collection is slow due to interruptions from the local wild...death.
- Why don't the murky pools here evaporate?

2nd Limestone,
Datan Morulimush was about harvesting wood when she came across the groundhogs encroaching upon our lands. Bravely, I shouted to her from the tower to stand her ground and fight them off (as I noticed she had an axe in her hand). She poignantly slew one of the undead beasts but then decided an axe was an unnecessary weapon and she cast it aside. As there were three more skeletal groundhogs remaining, she ingeniusly used her baby as a shield as she battered the groundhogs.

The day is hers and her baby suffered minor lacerations to her arms and legs.

7th Limestone,
The peasantry caught a skeletal groundhog in a cage trap today. I shall put it in my chambers, ghastly little thing will scare off any would-be thief. Also, one of the pet dogs seem to have accidentally set off a stonefall trap and died in the entryway.

In more animal news, splat:

9th Limestone,
A live groundhog was caught today. And at the same time, a new skeletal groundhog incursion has arrived. Putting a live groundhog and a dead groundhog next to each other would make a nice constrast.

12th Limestone,
I questioned one of the slum inhabitants today by the name of Thob. He actually likes the slums. He considers it good sleeping. These backward peasants have such low standards.

PTTG is attempting to have another meeting. Again.

13th Limestone,
Ordered another farm to be fallowed indefinitely. We need to do something about this seed overflow.

14th Limestone,
A caravan from the mountainhomes has arrived bearing goods of nondescript nature. I ordered some fellows to carry all the donkey skull totems they can find to the depot. Hopefully PTTG will stop trying to have a meeting long enough for him to trade something.

17th Limestone,
Traded for anything that looked useful (including some steel armour and weapons). Also, the mayor has been assigned to a beating for beating a miller. The officer in charge is Duke himself.

19th Limestone,
Some kobolds came within the compound and were swiftly repulsed. Apparently the very injured fire imp managed to crawl out of the magma vent and be devoured by a passing war dog.

I also found out who is the mystery saint who keeps cleaning all the vomit up. Turns out it's the mayor who I may or may not have asked to clean everything in the fortress since he had nothing to do. Duke is also too busy getting drunk to carry out the punishment.

20th Limestone,
Out of nowhere, a baby dies in the heat. No idea where this baby is. I found the mother of the baby sleeping in her room with a little andesite toy boat next to her. What happened to the baby... we will never know.

Even more mysterious is the mind state of the mother. She might need to be watched closely.

21st Limestone,
Fikod the mayor mysteriously suffocated in a closed off residential area today. Upon my arrival, I immediately notice PTTG trying to have a meeting with the mayor's corpse. I get PTTG out of the area by giving him the same orders I gave the mayor (clean everything or die).

I suspect that Duke might have been a little more than frustrated with this mayor's incessant whining for clear glass windows but we'll never know.

Note to self: Remember to order more gloves, shoes and trousers from the clothiers and to remind Duke to change his clothes.

25th Limestone,
No one seems to be interested in the tame rat or lizard, so I dumped them into the magma pipe. So much for them.

1st Sandstone,
Bored. The labourers are busy running around hauling things that need to be hauled, filling things that need to be filled, smoothing things that need to be smoothed. Seems I managed to drill some work ethic into their thick skulls. They're finishing up my little tomb now (Most of the pictures there are of dwarves labouring.).

I think I'll have them smooth out the mountainside next.

6th Sandstone,
Lots of little bits of metals lying around. Had the forges make furniture out of them. Caught another skeletal groundhog. Spent the day shouting at the labourers as they clean out my chambers of all rocks while spit shining my floors. The stones are cast off the drawbridge into the magma (pictured here).

14th Sandstone,
Saw the most beautiful iron maul in the world. Procured it and placed it right in the middle of my dining room for all to see. See, but not touch. I've made it my mission to find the most beautiful things in the fortress and place them where they can be preserved in safety. The only place I know of that is truly safe is my chambers, so that is where I shall place them.

15th Sandstone,
Merchants left today. I thought this might be a good time to introduce myself. This is my profile:

26th Sandstone,
I thought I was dreaming. I saw a so-called champion perform labour duty. He hauled the empty wine barrel to the stockpiles AFTER he finished drinking. Amazing!

4th Timber,
It's getting marginally cold. Had a small problem with skeletal groundhogs again as they made their way to the roof of the mountain to cause trouble for the mechanics. Morul Edemuz was unable to get down the mountain for 2 days because of this menace (though why he couldn't just break it apart with his fists is beyond me). The military managed to get to the peak (now equipped with steel spears and gear) and slay the fearsome foe so that work may continue.

Also I had the masons, who had nothing to do, refloor my chambers with crushed andesite powder.

15th Timber,
The lethargy is getting to me too as we set into decadence. Nothing interesting is happening and everything important has already been done. I ponder ways to get the masses to work. Perhaps I should restart the military?

In any case, Duke's clothes emporium has become the number one hotspot to buy your clothes in. I'm guessing it's because of the cave-chic decor. Most of the clothes sold there are actually made by Duke himself down in the clothing factories. Dwarven labour is the best kind of labour.

18th Timber,
Someone finally threw out the lizard and the rat.

22nd Timber,
Approved construction of an additional wing to the labour district to allow the stockpiling of stone blocks as well as the approval of stone block making by the binload.  Had the peasantry smooth more of the mountainside for symmetry.

24th Timber,
Dumb and Dumber are stuck outside for no reason. I have no idea why they are starving themselves out inside that hematite mine as there's plenty of access and exit.

1st Moonstone,
The calendar tells me winter is here, though I really can't tell the difference. One more season of monotone to go. I hope some more barbarians invade so I can see them get crushed by the many, many stonefall traps. At least my chambers are complete.

Rice: Temporary clerk while PTTG ran around trying to have meetings with the now dead mayor. Now that there's no more mayor, PTTG is actually doing work again, so you're back to doing masonry and engravings. Your current stats are: mighty, perfectly agile, superdwarvenly tough.

Duke: I'm not sure if you intended it or not, but Duke is now the premier clothier of the fortress. Every dwarf is sporting a Duke, one way or another. Of course, you're competing with the leatherworker's association, but hey, you've cornered one market. You also punched the mayor so hard he vomited out his lungs (apparently). Your stats are: strong, unbelievably agile, tough.

Well, it was the first time with shops and I wanted to make one out of the way. I had no choice over who bought it.

Then with it being a clothing store, I decided to make a bunch of clothes. Seeing as the cloither was currently doing other projects, I just had me do it.

 Hurah for the Captian Duke!

1st Moonstone,
So winter begins. A time of nothing. Since the labourers will soon be jobless and that just won't do, I'll have them do redundant work instead as it's better than nothing. We will begin by resurfacing the road.

4th Moonstone,
I nearly tripped over a sleeping champion in the hallways. When asked why he was sleeping in the hallways when the barracks were perfectly empty, he mentioned that someone once told his squad they were to sleep only on the floor. Were they being punished? Regardless, poor soldier morale leads to poor combat performance, so I had them sleep inside the barracks again.

Also, a pack of wolves arrived at our borders today to hunt down all the groundhogs. I had the military head out and finish both parties off.

13th Moonstone,
I saw Rice conducting a meeting today with a mason. Odd, as Rice isn't part of any clerical position.

15th Moonstone, sunrise,

Brilliant! I got my wish. Barbarians reemerge at the gates. This time it's a task force of Pikegoblins led by a master whipgoblin. Let's see how well my traps fare this time as they appear at the same gate as the last.

Wait a second...

I see another task force down by the Southern gates... Pikegoblins led by a Hammerlord.

Uh oh...

Looks like we might need some new immigrants.

15th Moonstone, noon,
Wow, that's a lot of casualties. Luckily all the important labour duties have already been done. This is a good show. Some brave engravers and miners and assorted, unimportant dwarves tried to put up a defense against the bowgoblins as a united militia and were instantly cut down. I wonder how fast the champions will fall.

My strategy, the most effective strategy, is to let the bowgoblins use all their ammo, then let them get swarmed by untrained recruits armed with axes. It solves two problems: The first being the overpopulation, the second being the siege.

I'm pretty sure the rest of the enemies will fall to my many many traps.

15th Moonstone, sunset,
The Southern taskforce has breached the inner walls and wandered into the courtyards. Not a particularly major threat. The Northern taskforce is too busy trying to climb over hills to do anything important. The Eastern taskforce is engaging three champions in full steel gear.

It is unfortunate that the second of the Champion squads is more interested in sparring in the barracks than engaging the enemy. Which also makes me wonder why the fortress and royal guards aren't doing anything.

One champion is dead. Filled with arrows. His sacrifice is probably in vain, as all sacrifices are want to do. The other champion made it into the fray though, after felling the swordsmaster. One more is coming.

16th Moonstone, sunrise,
What a show! Eral the Spearchampion hurled himself into the squad of bowgoblins with the tenacity of a roaring tiger and got promptly shot at from all sides. After taking a hit to the right lower leg, he ran out of the squad without doing a single bit of damage while being shot at from the back. Dodging every single other bolt hurled at him, he managed to trek over a hundred yards to hide behind a wall to nurse his wounds.

At the same time, the reinforcement (emphasis on the singular) again jumped into the squad armed with a steel warhammer. Only to be pincushioned (again, without doing any damage.) There are only two champions left unfortunately. (As Eral is now very likely dead)

In the north, things are more interesting as the entirety of the northern taskforce is gooshed by my stonefall and weapon traps.

In the south, the goblins have been almost entirely wiped out in a similar manner. Those not killed have been captured in cage traps. I shall enjoy thinking what to do with these foul barbarians.

I might have to hire a new military after this though since there will probably only be two champions remaining. Perhaps one consisting of more modern weaponry other than spears and hammers.

18th Moonstone,
'lo and behold, Eral spent two full days nursing a mangled leg while dodging every single arrow from the bowgoblins. The goblins are routing now (most likely since they ran out of ammo unable to hit a crippled dwarf for two days). Unfortunate, since now I have to tend to an injured dwarf, but such is life. The peasantry will most likely celebrate the worthless fool as a hero.

I'll let the peasantry deal with the dead and burial. I have to deal with the melting of equipment and training of crossbowdwarves.

Around 10 dwarven casualties. Maybe 30 barbaric goblin casualties. No important losses other than the champions. Nothing important was halted as nothing important was going on. This siege has now given the rabble enough work to do to last till the next spring. There are some assorted tantrums here and there but nothing the fortress guard can't manage.

Some of the remaining peasants are exacting their revenge on the goblin wounded. Like Dumed the Pump Operator here, maiming an unconscious goblin spearman:

No one wants to help Eral to a bed as he's still passed out on the mountain.

23rd Moonstone,
A pack of skeletal wolf have arrived to feast on carrion. At least, that's what the miners tell me. I for one don't see any skeletal wolf. Also, Udil Eraloltar is our new mayor. The prisons are now occupied by a few deceitful individuals who decided to destroy fortress property to vent their mourning.

26th Moonstone,
I found the perfect place to place all these goblins. In my own chambers. I can then test them for physical weaknesses from there.

1st Opal,
We might have our first post-war death as Sakzul the dyer has been striken by melancholy and refuses to eat or drink. He now stalks the hallways decrying violence. This is a good thing, as the hallways he stalks are those of the residential areas and it keeps dwarves from wanting to go back for a rest.

Also, once again PTTG is attempting to attend a meeting with the mayor who, inexplicably, is resting an injury in bed. He wasn't even close to the frontlines.

4th Opal,
The corpses and the cold are attracting a lot more skeletal wolves as they hurl themselves at our defenses and burst into sprays of bone.

7th Opal,
Discovered today that Eral dodged all those arrows WITHOUT a shield. Pretty amazing, though quite useless now that he's probably going to starve to death in the mountains as no one wants to take him to a bed.

13th Opal,
We've apparently run out of plant fiber cloth. Remember to order more cloth, silk, and leather to clothe the populace. The last thing I want to see is a naked peasant dangling his dirt-ridden, infested valuables in front of my face.

--later--

My my, this is an interesting predicament. One of the guards informed me that Atir, a grieving, maddened bone carver has been inspired by one of the aspects of fey, making him even madder but with a mad desire to maddeningly create a mad project. Unfortunately, he is inside dwarven solitary confinement indefinitely with no real end to his sentence.

It's a pity, as I would've liked to have seen what a grieving maddwarf would have made out of bone. Unless someone knows how to break a dwarf out of prison, then he's stuck in there. Until then, I guess I'll keep this interesting specimen inside my chambers.

22nd Opal,
Ducim the planter has finally volunteered to bring Eral the spearchampion to a bed after Eral spent most of the month dehydrated and starving, on the brink of death not by wounds but by neglect. We've got a few cases of tantrums breaking out but it doesn't seem too bad yet as the fortress guard rally to end any disruption in work.

2nd Obsidian,
The final month. The tax collector asked me to build a grate. I'm not quite sure why, but I already had a grate in construction so I just waved him off. Then the mayor sent me a letter (as he is still bedridden from a broken arm, the useless worm) warning me not to export any large gems. I sent him a letter warning him that unless he "heals" soon, I will have him moved to a room inside the magma.

6th Obsidian,
Atir managed to break free of his prison today thanks to some clever engineering. He bolted out of my chambers into a craftsdwarves workshop along with three wolf bones and a felsite block. We shall see what becomes of this event.

8th Obsidian,
The brooding Dyer who preached the end of violence constantly died of starvation today in the general quarters. Good riddance.

10th Obsidian,
The new granite block road has been finished today. Not a particularly big difference, but it'll do for the welcoming of traders and trash disposal.

--later--

Atir created "Dangerghosts the Colourless Wine", a wolf bone door. On it is an image of diamonds. I expected something more suitable after whispering death and destruction in his ear throughout his entire stay in my chambers prior to his release. Perhaps it symbolizes the gate of death. Death being a colourless wine. I think I know the perfect place to put this.

12th Obsidian,
More skeletal wolves arrive to be crushed by stone.

14th Obsidian,
A herbalist was taken down by one of the wolves who lurked in ambush down by the northern valley. A fisherdwarf was about to be the next target when Duke came rushing in and beat the wolf to bonemeal with his fists.

20th Obsidian,
More skeletal wolves appear in the same valley. This time they ambush woodworker Datan and her baby (she was the one who used her baby as a shield once).

Unfortunately, she used the same tactic again and this time her child didn't survive. But apparently, she's still on top of the world, leaving her dead child to rot on the field of battle to undoubtably summon more skeletons.

24th Obsidian,
Lost an engraver today to melancholy. Not a particularly important dwarf (only a tier up from peasant). She's still clutching on to her baby while drooling and babbling nonsense. It's a funny sight.

27th Obsidian,
Caught some skeletal wolves today. More for my chambers and experiments.

1st Granite,
Spring is here. Means my term is over. Suffice to say, I think there's been a huge improvement in everything except military, which I don't particularly care for. My recommendation for the next ruler is simple: rebuild the military and put the wolves in my chambers along with the other creatures there. Don't worry too much about the depression setting in among the peasantry, it's just a passing phase and those infected by it are of the lower-class peasantry. For now, I shall retire to my experiments in my chambers before one day returning to the capital.

Here's a final status report:

-----
Notes:
- That's it. Was fun but tiring. Remember that Rice is just a temporary clerk right now since PTTG is once again trying to have nonexistent meetings. There are enough traps right now to repel most sieges as I've covered up the hole from the last time so take your time building a military.

p.s: Don't unsuspend the road in my chambers. I like the pattern. I also didn't upload to DFMA because I'm lazy and don't have the internet speed for it, truthfully. So, maybe the next guy?

Zen doesn't seem to have been around for a while. Perhaps we should skip to GeneralValter?

Note to next person: You're going to be fighting trolls and beak dogs next. So don't rely on doors.

Unless said doors are made of iron, or you have a small drawbridge that raises to seal the doorway.

A sealing device that I attached to a microline lever.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

*looks in save file* Well now... this fortress has a very different sort of sprawling feel to it that I'm not used to.

I like how the spring save was made moments before an engraver and baby were incinerated.
