You can't see magma vents from the world map, only volcanoes (red ^s).  So yeah, that's sand.  I suggest using dwarf foreman to find the site you want, so you can be guaranteed to find the interesting things.

I still say go for the red sand area, and don't use prospector, it seems like cheating to me.

Just make sure theres magma. I don't care for much else, as long as not too many exploratory shafts need to be made for coal.
