Captains Log. 24th of Moonstone
Today we got the news.
The quarry was working! BurnedToast's idea had worked.

Unfortunately, our lust for precious rock, so rare to us these days, caused us to forget ourselves. Nearly ending in disaster.

The quarry may be ruined, but the idea is still sound. We shall progress further next time!

Captains Log, 15th of Opal
It's been almost a year, a long time coming. But today two of the injured died.
They were just useless fools, so they will not be missed greatly.
But they succumbed to a strange madness. They refused to accept booze when offered to them. Instead, they demanded water.
I told them that it was madness. I told them there was only ice around.
They just kept screaming for water though.
Madness!

If you remove the floors/roofs, it will expose the water and make it outside instead of subterranean, and it will freeze instantly. then just mine out all the ice except 1 layer to keep the water in, and go down another level (might need to go down many levels to get totally past the aquifer). make it big at the top because it gets 1 square smaller on each side for every level (for the ice wall).

be very, very careful no-one is in the water or falls in the water when this happens, if they get encased in ice they will die instantly.

sorry if that's what you did and I am misunderstanding the problem.

as for the elk busting the doors, wow, never saw that before! I guess undead are building destroyers now, exciting!

Captains Log.
Elf. Elk. They sound so similar. Too similar maybe.
Those pointy eared jerks passed through our area today. We foolishly let them in, let them get settled.

It nearly spelled our doom.
She-Axe and Onul were struck down when the Elks made their raid. Sweeping over She-Axe and Onul, and forcing their way into our home. Only through force of numbers did we stop their assault.

We shall bury them in the quarry. Such brave souls deserve to be entombed in stone.

As for the Elves, I think its clear what happened. The two are in league!
I advised them that we required compensation. They refused.
I insisted. They left. Without their belongings.

In more pleasant news, we have very nearly completed our reservoir. After constructing a proper quarry, there is now the chance for expansion.

Captains Log. 12th of Slate.
The Metalcrafter has begun acting suspiciously. Very suspiciously.
He began demanding we build him a forge.
I tried telling him we don't even have an anvil, but he wouldn't listen. He just stood there, in the meeting hall, ranting and raving.
I've ordered Ganndd to keep an eye on him.

Suddenly, there was a commotion from above.
We all rushed to investigate, and were met by the antlered menace.
BurnedToast had been caught outside, and we rushed to his aid.
In the end, we lost a single dwarf, a new migrant whose name I forget, but we saved BurnedToast.
It'll probably take him a while to recover.

You know, I had assumed that, were I to roof over the ice area once again, it would thaw. Apparently not. Any suggestions for dealing with this?

Captains Log. 18th of Hematite.
At last we have completed a well.

Strangely, we were basically forced to dig it below the aquifer. Our shafts of frozen ice, made for quarrying stone, never appear to thaw. We built a roof over the shaft. Still kept freezing. We know when nature has us beaten, so we did it another way.

Still, now we have water for our invalids. BurnedToast's thirst is finally quenched. As is that of the other dwarves injured.

The Metalcrafter, who was acting weird, earlier, has now reached the point of utter madness. As I write this, he is crawling around on the floor, babbling.

Sadly, She-Axe would have made the perfect sheriff. However, as she is now dead, I am forced to give preference to Ganndd. He is less experienced, but is the only other suitable candidate.

Captains Log. 20th of Malachite.
Today saw two events. The first was the inevitable demise of the Metalcrafter Iden Likotdoren. A dwarf who had, as far as I know, achieved nothing in life. He had basically gone mad as soon as he got here.
Seems a perfectly sane reaction, really.

The other event was the beginning of the conversion of the quarry/well area into our main living area. We shall, in the traditional manner, live amongst our dead. Ever wall shall contain stone caskets.
It is the dwarven way.

First, the living area, then, the party room. Then my ever increasingly large office.

I suppose we'll need some sort of judicial area as well.

It saddens me to see The Fonz hasn't yet taken over your fortress with endless parties and caused their deaths through irresponsible behaviour.

Er, i mean, you have temperature and such turned on, right? otherwise, i'm not sure if that layer of water'll ever melt.

Captains Log. 2nd of Sandstone.
That jerk Vabok is back. You know, the liaison from last year?
Anyway, he asked us what we want, and it was pretty much the same as last time.

More interesting is the traders who came with him. We promptly showed them all the stuff we stole from the Elves. We also sold all the stuff from our numerous fallen brethren. They're not using it anymore

There were grumblings from the others about this last choice. Grumblings soon ceased when they saw these items were being traded for barrels of booze!

We bought it all. That should keep us going a while longer!

As an aside, BurnedToast is looking much better. I imagine that after a while he should be fighting fit again, and not at all near death.

**Temperature is on. It's just wacky. Also, maybe you will cause havoc.

Captains Log. 26th of Sandstone.
The dwarf who insists we call him 'The Fonz' for some reason, has begun acting a bit... Elvish.

I kept my eye on him for a bit, but he sat in the Great Hall, unmoving.

At this exact moment, Ganndd was assaulted by Skeletal Elks, who had snuck into our compound. He was smashed to a bloody pulp before we could rescue him.

We quickly rushed to fight off the menace, but found ourselves too late. Luckily, no more deaths eventuated, and somebody actually shut the damned gate.
Once again, we appear to require the services of a new sheriff.

Captain's Log. 12th of Moonstone.
I feel I must note today, that 'The Fonz' has ceased his silent reverie.
Bursting into a blabbering mess, he is currently running around the fortress.

He discontinued this after a short time, and went and hid in his room.
This was only for a moment. He shortly burst out again, running back and forth in the hall, tearing off his clothes.
Shortly he wore only his hood, a sock, and a shoe.
Soon it was just the hood.
And soon it was nothing at all. Strangely, this seamed better than just the hood. That was disturbing.

Obviously, you failed to construct a party hall, thus The Fonz couldn't make a platinum juke box and was driven insane by the cruel, cruel reality of the place he was stuck in.

Can i apply for another migrant in the next wave, or is it one dwarf per person?

putting a roof over it makes it count as inside, so you can build furniture and whatnot under it, but it does not make it subterranean so it still has the same temperature as the surface. AFAIK there is no way to make it subterranean again (you can try building walls over it but I doubt it will work). Anyway, you can't quarry in the aquifer squares ever, anyway, because the walls leak an unlimited amount of water. You are doing it right by just going under it and building down there. Be sure to build hatch covers over any stairways that go below it just in case somehow it melts or gets dug out or something, you don't want the whole fort to flood.

Edit: hatch covers might keep the elk out too, I'm not sure but now that you have stones it's worth a shot. At the very least, you can lock them to keep dwarves from wandering outside and getting mangled.
