Captain's Log. 20th of Malachite.
It appears the great staircase is becoming a popular suicide spot, as evidenced by Joro.

Aside from the unfortunate convenience factor, the staircase itself is now commonly referred to as the Stairwell of Sorrow.

My first thought to respond to that question is "another tower!"

But that's just being silly.

I'm imagining the section above the ground will be a proper fort.

Captain's Log. 6th of Galena.
I once again was graced by the presence of the Baron and Baroness.
I inquired about the window, and whether she was happy with it.
She just noted it was very nice, and then fobbed my question off.

She then proceeded to demand a new item. An armour stand. In her dining room.

I questioned why she needed it, since she didn't wear armour. I was told that this wasn't the point, and that I had better get one for her.
I initially thought this wouldn't be so hard.

Then she told me that it must be made of sterling silver.

Wonderful.

As of the 10th of Galena
There was a knocking on the door, and the Captain stirred from his slumber.
"By the gods!" he muttered, "Some people have no regard."
He opened the door to find the lady Bomrek, Captain of the Guard, on his doorstep.

"Bomrek?" he asked in surprise, "Is something the matter?"
"You could say that." she said, looking worried. "May I come in?"
"Yes of course. Take a seat... uh... I appear to not have any in my room." he said, a little dismayed.
"I'll just sit on the bed, sir." she suggested.
"Ah. Ah, very well then. What's going on?"

Bomrek took a seat and began with the statement, "I've just had an encounter with the Philosopher, Thoughtcrazed."
"Ah, Thoughtcrazed, eh? Quite the talker, won't shut up half the time. No wonder you look disturbed."
"Er, actually sir, she came at me like a lunatic."
"That was brave of her." mused the Captain.
"I put my axe through her face."
"That... was a bit unlucky for her."
"Thing is, I'm not sure why it happened. I've not affronted the citizens in any way, have I?" she asked, a little desperate.
"No. I can't see that having been the case. Thoughtcrazed was always a bit of a nut, anyway. Flies off the handle at the drop of a... thing."
"A hat, sir?" suggested Bomrek.
"No, more like some sort of non-clothing item. Possibly a spoon."
"Erm, back to the topic at hand, sir. Are you saying that Thoughtcrazed was emotionally disturbed?" asked Bomrek, trying to get things straight.
"Yes, more or less. Just look at her name, for crying out loud!"
"So... I didn't do anything to provoke such an act?"
"It's doubtful. I hear Thoughtcrazed has been acting pissy lately. I guess she just reached breaking point while in your immediate vicinity." suggested the Captain.

Then he shrugged and said "Apart from that, I don't know why she was so angry."
"It doesn't matter, sir. You've been a great consolation to me." she said. She smiled a smile tinged with sadness. "It's just an unfortunate incident."
"That's the spirit." said the Captain, jovially.
"Thank you sir, I'll be going now." she replied.
She stood up, gave him a quick kiss, then fled room, as though embarrassed.

The Captain stayed where he was for a few moments, staring across the room and out the open door.
"Huh." he grunted, thoughtfully, and went over to close the door. "Don't suppose I'll be able to get back to sleep now."

Captain's Log. 15th of Galena.
I went to visit Bomrek on a social visit today, but she was, surprisingly, actually busy.
Apparently, she was dealing with the insanity of an Atir Tombstandards, a naked, and now completely mad, lady dwarf. She was, by accounts, still holding onto the pick she used as a miner.
Apparently citizens had been complaining, partly because she's acting crazy in the larder, but mainly because of the nudity.

I must admit shock. I've worked with Atir, and she never struck me as the sort to go mad at the drop of a spoon.

It was at this time we heard the babbling and profane shouts outside the office.
We checked on the commotion, and could do little but watch as she flung herselves into the abyss central to the Stairwell of Sorrow.

"Another one." Bomrek observed. "We better go see the damage."

I followed her down and found the body laying on the floor at the bottom.
She was laying on top of one of my best engravings. I pointed it out to Bomrek and she whistled her approval at my fine engraving.
Blood also served to highlight a few of my other works. All very good.
I still can't say that I approve of people plummeting at it.

Heh, the crazy philosopher went even crazier and got killed? did he have to sleep on the floor or something?

The whole window in a tomb thing was laugh out loud funny. I think you captured the absurdity of noble demands all too well  :)

The only suggestion I have for what to do with a bajillion rock blocks (other then the tower, of course) is paving the whole outside part that is protected by the wall. Probably better to use roads then floors, though, unless you really like designating hundreds of floors one at a time  :p

The Philosopher got a slew of bad thoughts all at once. Clothes rotting off broke the camels back.

Events on the 19th of Galena
A shout called out, and all the warriors grabbed their weapons.
The Captain, too, readied himself.
A She-Dragon had come, probably seeking some place to lay her eggs.
"Not today!" grunted the Captain, as he climbed the stairs.

"Which is it?" he asked BurnedToast as he caught up with him.
"We've identified her from her markings. It's Rinal Woundcrosses."
"Should I know the name?" asked the Captain.
"No. She's a nobody. History will forget her, so long as she falls here, today."
"She'll fall. This is no normal outpost, my old friend! This is Nist Akath! We have a captive Hydra! We've slain a dragon before! I've throttled a Titan to death by myself! A single dragon should give us little bother."
"Nagash II and Akroma are already in position, sir." advised Adalore, joining them.
"Good. If they can make the shot, we won't have to worry about what to do next."

Up on the surface, the dragon mounted the ramps leading into the barbican to the north. A lone miner was headed that way when the dragon appeared, breathing flame and scorching the ground.
"He's done for!" murmured Nagash II. "Akroma, be ready!"

The flame cleared, and miraculously, the miner was fine, and the dragon was captured by a cage trap.

"What the hell?" grunted Nagash II, surprised. Akroma just whisted in disbelief.

"Looks like you weren't needed, lads." said the Captain from behind them. "Looks to me like we're starting a collection of mythical beasts."

"Captain, can you imagine an arena match between the Dragon and the Hydra?" asked Adalore.
"Adalore, I'm not letting a Hydra and Dragon loose in the bowels of the fortress. It's really just asking for trouble. Especially as one of them flies."
"Yes, sir, I know. It's interesting to imagine, though."

"In any case, today's challenge seems a lot more tame in that cage. I suppose the challenge now is to move it inside."

Captain's Log. 12th of Timber.
Happy days! Nok has given birth once again, to a baby girl they've named Thikut, or 'Book' in the traditional tongue.

There's no time for celebrations, sadly, as work on tidying up the deeps continues. It will be some time before we can undertake any further major projects.

Drop of a spoon....

You, sir, have created a masterpiece of literature. One needs not even know about Dwarf Fortress to find it humorous!

Well the captain, being the legend that he is, could do with a pet dragon...
