I've had that happen before when I dug into a magma pipe 3 z-levels below its surface, but that's it.

There are tricks to avoid that with z-levels

Well i was doing exploratory mining for the magma pipe, and after it incinerated my miner i checked and he had hit it from its top z-level.


EDIT:

This top z-level naturally meaning the magma was still in a position to flow into the tunnel.

What you do is dig to within one tile of the magma, then go 1 z level above and channel out the remaining tile. Of course you have to find a suitable spot, but that's rarely hard.

The trick to avid miner death when penetrating a magma source is to dig diagonally so the lava has to travel between the corner of stones.

At least that seems to work for me.
