Well, if I had Mammoths modded in, then that could indeed happen. With skeletal Mammoths. (shudders).

As it stands, the Captain keeps the place mostly safe from things. Once the wall is complete, he will actually be able to do other stuff apart from patrol. He's getting kind of pissy about having been on duty so much.
That said, only he and Adalore are truly resistant to the antlered ones. Anyone else would probably get mobbed, but either of those two can take as many as they want.

At the moment, we're looking at a big baddie being required for some serious damage.

Goblins can now be dealt with by catapults, since we now have effective countermeasures.
So we're talking about things like a Colossus, a Dragon (fiery doom end), or the arrival of the King.

When we hit 10 years, I'll run a movie showing what everyone is up to, one named dwarf at a time, along with a tour of the fortress.

i suppose it wouldn't go amiss dying in a fire when living in a frozen wasteland,

irony is a pain in the jacksie.

Well, while we're waiting, more Dwarven Poetry.

First, a Nist Akath Soldiering chant.

Fer Osod
Nazush, Ang
Ongos Lam
Mez Ulol Gasol
Nir, Libash abod
Nob, ulol il
Mez, Atol Bisol issun
Ud Imketh.
Atast Zanor.
Bidok Vir
Amid Ubas
Anil Rash Nist Akath

(Beasts of Bone)
(Blood, red)
(taints stone)
(Three Last breaths.)
(One, my Axe Swing.)
(Two, my last words.)
(Three, find peace everlasting.)
(Willful Justice.)
(Brave of Heart.)
(Act with Humility.)
(Listen to our Screams)
(Glorious Death for Nist Akath)

Second, a poem of fighting the Elves

Fotthor vakun,
Idok Rir, iltang nol,
Libash lolum, feb zanor
Alath fer, ging vagush,
Nerrid tarmid nir ulol ashok,
Nilun kon rigoth tosid,
Fotthor sodel rodim akith,
Omer govos logem ang,
Nazush kal zotir.

The Woodland Deceivers,
Pointed Ears, Forked Tongue,
Axe to wood, arrow to our hearts,
Bolt to beast, our young are slain,
Grind our blades one more time,
Wear our masterfully crafted armour,
Forests will shield none from our wrath,
Green leaves painted red,
With the blood of the smiling fiends.

Hey Cap. If you aren't already, you can use this http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=11&t=001172  system to save some resources. You could train a few ballista operators that way.

At the end of all this, I'd love to see how many screens of vomit, blood and mud the captain has on him.

Finally got around to reading the pages so far and I have to say it's a great story, can't believe I've ignored this thread for so long.

Once you get started again I'd love to have a dwarf in this interesting world of yours.

Name: Merlon
Profession: Soldier (any/shield)
Gender if available: Male

Having only recently realized the position he´s put himself into by volunteering for the Nist Akath military he has turned to his previous experience as a pump operator and realized the potential to implement a pre-bootcamp gym to better prepare new meatshields for the antlered menace.

What he's proposing is a room with 2+ screwpumps (pumping nothing) set on manual operation. New potential recruits are asked to train here so that once recruited into the army proper they are better prepared and more easily able to mutilate each other during training... err.. the skeletal elks after training.

Hm. I believe I may use that. We're going through an awfully large amount of stone with all our constructing, and the mining is slow going now that most of the older miners are dead.

Would save some bone too. You need marksdwarves eventually, you just gotta have them.

Nice kill, that titan. Honestly, why do you even have other soldiers?  :D

Btw, I noticed I haven't been added yet. I also noticed a siege operator immigrated there. However, if you're not willing to give me the operator, I'd like to take the hammerer or the tax collector instead.

Mainly because we beg to stay in the army, and the Captain can only be in so many places at once (omnipresence skill?)

Dwarfaholic, my apologies. I think the dwarf in question is a female, but I'd have to check. Should it be a male, I will name him accordingly.

That's pretty much it. Sometimes the Captain has to do non-military stuff. It's then that the rest of the military becomes invaluable.
Still, once the wall is properly up, it will ease the burden on them substantially.

And the dry-pumping idea is amazing. Having all pre-military chumps do some hard time there will really sort the dwarves from the other dwarves.
I'll have a few of them lined up so that they can dry-pump like crazy before they join the military. Should make them nice and strong.
