Captain's Log. 13th of Limestone.
Our greenskinned friends are back, led by their filthy leader, Song Dreadlash.
They entered our area while my troops were nearby.
Wisely, Nagash II ordered them back to the fortress.
I am not going to throw their lives away in the hope they may take out Song.

We are lucky in that they appear to have only come with two squads this time.
Both from the west.
Unfortunately, this has neatly bypassed out defences, which mainly deal with the east.
We may have to lure them inside to deal with them.

Captain's Log. 17th of Sandstone.
It appears that we have again missed my insane black bronze item deadline.
This really is unacceptable, even if it is insane.
I randomly decided to punish Kinneus for not producing this item.

Oh, he protested the decision. Said he was in the military, and not part of the production chain. He even said he didn't even have anything to do with metalcraft in his entire life.

This last part is true, he was actually an animal dissector before conscription.

Still, 26 days in prison for the lazy bum.
To his credit, he did not put up a fight.

Captain's Log. 11th of Timber.
The Goblins seem disinclined to enter the fortress.
Likely they know how trapped it is, and instead intend to place pressure on us by disrupting our trading.

We have, however, completed a repellent for the current situation. And this marks the beginning of the full fortification of our plateau.

I'm not sleeping, I'm just thinking of traps. Efficient traps!
And some not so efficient ones. A mass of stone-fall traps shaped like a "^", for example.
I also recommend placing a small aboveground stone room somewhere away from the Antlered menace, after this siege. Only way in/out is a tunnel from the fortress. Trade some Humans for aboveground seeds/fruit (Or take it from the elves, whichever is more convenient.), then make a small farm plot, just to get a little variety in the Dwarven diet.

Hm, we may do that when we have some breathing space.
Right now the project is to fortify the plateau.
This basically means that we cut out a cliff along its entirity, and install emplacements for catapults.
We only have 3, but we can move them around to where they're needed.

Once that is done, the project will be extended to building a wall around the upper level of the plateau.
The only ways in or out will be trapped to the blazes.

Okay, I finally thought of something really useful.

Observe:

First underground floor:
..........._______
><.........||D____
..................

Second floor:

,,,,,,.|___
,,,,,,=X___
,,,,,,.|

Side view:

><........||D____
,>,,,,|.|IX______
,,,,,,,|,|,,,
< > stairs

X door
D marksdwarf
= bridge (lowered)
I bridge (raised)
. channeled ground
, floor
|| fortification

The bridge is raisable, and the lever for it is some distance behind the dwarf.
The bridge is normally raised.
This way it protects everybody behind it, and nobody can enter, even if they can crush buildings, due to the moat.
The only way a creature can enter is if it is a flying building destroyer.

Well, once we can get some pumping going on, I would not mind starting an indoor moat/lake.

You put in me jail!? Tyrant! Torturer! Carnifex!

I hope you at least let my broken arm heal first. You know... the arm I lost while defending you?

Actually your arm healed really fast. So there's no need to worry about that.

Also, yes, I could probably do a waterfall. By the by, does anyone know if the following scheme will work?
  OOO
~~P-----~~

Legend:
~ Dug into aquifer
- floor
P screw pump
OOO Water wheel.

Captain's Log. 16th of Moonstone.
The Goblins are gone.
All that remains behind is a handful of bodies, and their equipment of course.
This gives us free reign to build fortifications without incident.
We also need a new set of stairs bypassing the aquifer. The old one is getting too narrow for our current requirements, and we have no reasonable way to expand it.

Captain's Log. 25th of Opal.
In such an inhospitable wasteland, it's always a difficult decision to send one's people out to work.

Sometimes they come back.

Sometimes they don't.

We watched helplessly as Locke, who had allowed the Skeletal Elks to chase him too far from our compound, was crushed beneath their hooves.
Too late, our squad intercepted and destroyed the murdersome Elk.
Yet another body for my office walls.

Captain's Log. 1st of Obsidian.
The first day of the last leg of winter brings curious news.
The madness extends to our children as well.
The fishcleaner's child, Nil, has started acting strangely. Possibly this is due to the death of his father, Locke.
I guess he left a whole family behind.

In any case, the boy has taken over a crafts workshop, and is currently screaming for wood, rock, raw clear glass, and rough gems.

I guess we'll see what we can do. Can't let too many die.

Oh no! I'm dead! And My kid's going to die!
I humbly request a trap near my tomb. Doesn't matter what kind.

Your tomb is actually in the Captain's office.
He's way more dangerous than a trap.

Also, we caged a skeletal elk.

The arena fight will be of a skeletal elk vs the goblins.
