Were those built cages or cages in stockpiles? Because maybe a cage, animal and all,  in a stockpile counts as an item. Of course you still have find a way to counter the scattering, but at least the animals won't be released, should this be the case.

Thing is, even if the animals do stay in their unbult cages, just how would your adventurer get them out?

But if the cages are UNbuilt how would they be linked to pressure plates?

Heh. Well, I finally got through it. Excellent fucking work, sir; a true classic.

A question, though: where does the accent go in "Akath?" Is it 'A-kath,' or 'a-kAth?'

I believe that is a question for the dwarven language masters.  I read it the second way myself but I don't even know what it translates to so I'm hardly an expert.

Which makes me wonder...I hear learning Klingon (oh my god theres even a spelling in the spellcheck)is a big thing among the trekkies.
Will DF dwarven eventually get to that point?  Should we be scared?

I, too, read the name as "NIST ah-KATH".

And Fortrish isn't developed enough for anyone to really learn to speak. Actual conlangs, like Klingon, Logban, and Quenya have complete and fairly consistent rules of grammar, and generally a few words without direct English translations - like the Inuit's multiple words for snow, or some kind of idiomatic expressions.

Fortrish only has the barest rules for grammar, and not enough of them to form sentences - only enough to name things. The vocabulary, too, directly translates to English, which makes it qualify as a cipher at best. Personally, I always imagine the full version of Fortrish as having no word for plain "rock" or "stone", but featuring three or four for various kinds of feldspar or gabbro. And probably only one word for trees. And a single word meaning both "elf" and "smoldering ashes".

Akath means "Winter".  The name of the fort is literally "Fear the Winter", like the original title proclaimed.

Wow, I finished reading this and just realized that the sun has long since gone down.  I need to start furiously cramming for my physics test in nine hours now.  But damn, this story was too good to put down!

Could I pretty please get a character who's the descent of Ironblood?  If that's not likely to be an option in the future, could I be any of the other fortress native offspring?

What... is your name: 'Ukat "Luslemidek"'
What... is your favoured profession:  Siege engineer/Operator.  If your looking for more recruits, Marksdwarf is prefered.
What... is your gender?  Meh, not like you can tell with the beards.

Now this is what I call a fortress.

Cap'n, did you ever expect Nist Akath to become so famous and huge? and epic?

And also, do dwarves get stat increases after they "max"? Because that could explain why the Nist Akath military is so ludicrous.

If there's room in the adventure, I shall be PresidentEvil, spearperson, male.

I will mod in plastic as a resource.  I will then tweak the Dwarven civ entry so that coins are only made out of plastic, and are called "credit cards".
I will make dwarves purchase things with bushels of credit cards.  It will be a mockery of both systems.
It will be stupid.  But it will be gloriously stupid.

The dwarves DO upgrade in skills. I don't know the cap. If I remember correctly, the legendary is 15th lvl, while I had 80+ lvl engravers who engrave in 1 sec.

Actually I thought they'd all be dead within five years.
And they do get more hit points after they max, yes. That's why Ironblood is basically unkillable by normal means.

Must be all that filth. After 30 years it has to form some sort of rock hard, possibly semi-sentient coating.
