After a little thought, i've been trying to think of ways to improve upon my spiral stair case idea, and this is what i've come up with. I'm sure that if you've already got a stairwell designed after my initial concept, that you can impliment and hybridise one of these concepts to open up access to the rest of the floor you wish to expand into though.

Also, i'm going to have to request another dwarf to construct the whatever stair well you come up with. Boy, a female Dwarf, miner, engraver, whatever, hehe.

Now, if only i could come up with a nice simple elven trader smasher/sorter, to make dealing with them as easy as pulling a lever..

Upright spikes. Set up a long/wide enough area of them that you can easily get all the elves in it at once before they reach the depot (or perhaps on their way out), and set the lever to pull repeatedly. They'll be perforated in seconds!

I think the items would still be alright.. Just a bit bloodspattered. A lot bloodspattered.

**I can still modify the stairwell. At the moment the work is being done via a stairwell running center to the pillar. None of the extra floor has been dug out either.

As for the elves, they're going to have to wait for retribution.

Captain's Log. 28th of Granite.
Again, we find ourselves under siege by the goblins.
This time, even their ruler has come to fight. Not that they can get in.
But we can't get out, either.

Instead, we covertly constructed a catapult bunker, capable of hitting all enemy positions.
I fear the siege has only just begun!

Captain's Log. 8th of Slate.
The Goblins have left, fleeing under our incessant (but impotent) catapult fire.
For the entire siege they were sitting beyond range, so... I don't know why they got scared.

I guess Goblins are just funny that way.

Captain's Log. 12th of Slate.
More migrants. Why they keep coming to this hellhole, I don't know. It's not like there's anything for them all to do.

Here's an accounting of them, anyway.

1 Lye maker.
2 Metalsmiths
1 Furnace Operator
1 Leatherworker
2 Metalcrafters
3 Stoneworkers
1 Mason
1 Woodworker
2 Animal Dissectors
1 Animal Caretaker
5 useless gits.
2 brats
==================
I drafted some of the more useless ones. We'll make proper dwarves of them yet.

Captain's Log. 13th of Hematite.
Goblins.
We drove away their armies, and now they return in stealth, to steal our children away from us!

Young Sibrek Boltamazed was the victim this time.
Luckily, with our home now crawling with military dwarves, the goblin did not get far, before being Sula, Pollux, and one of the guardsdwarves.
Lacking weapons at the time, they beat the everloving tar out of the goblin, before it finally succumbed.

Sibrek was saved, and everybody was uninjured. Except the goblin.

Unfortunately, we had barely dealt with that goblin, before another one had tried to snatch Goden Beanletters.

Kinneus fell upon him with great fury, although he himself lacked a weapon.
He soon garnered assistance from a guardsdwarf, and they too, were victorious without injury.

Kinneus soon found yet another one, skulking in the shadows. He set upon it with assistance from Adalore, smashing it to a bloody pulp.

BurnedToast, however, informed me we had three more intruders.
They'd all been captured by our traps, however.

It appears we have three goblins at our mercy.
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Captain's Log. 13th of Malachite.
It's been a month of battle.
The humans came, and while they were here, our home came under attack from more of the antlered menace than ever before.

Poor Onul Dodoklogem had his head torn off by a polar bear.

We have fought them off at every turn.

This month's projects have included:
The commencement of the construction of the arena pit. We'll put those goblins to good use.

The completed construction of a large, easterly defensive wall against the goblins.

The planning and commencement of an expansion of our courtyard to include a new area for trading.

Stodir, previously a fishcleaner (of all things), has produced some sort of amazing item. A dolomite crown, named "The first revered finger"
It has an image of a dwarf on it. The dwarf is withering away.
Clearly not one of me.

With all those spikes on it, I can't imagine someone actually wearing this thing.

That one may be of poor ol' Metalax, withering away in madness in the middle of our food stores.

Captain's Log. 28th of Limestone.
The dwarven caravan has arrived. Some goblins snuck in with it, but were promptly captured by cage traps.

We now have an adequate number to practice weapon skills on, for the enjoyment of the public.

The caravan, however, brought wood, lots and lots of wood.
This is exactly what we need!
At last, barrels to make booze in.
For too long, we have gone dry without sufficient barrels for the drinks of the gods. This will change!

Captain's Log. 7th of Sandstone.
For some reason we don't have any clothes in this fortress that aren't currently being worn.

This means I have exactly the tatters I am wearing (and in some cases, no longer wearing).

Not. Good. Enough.

I'm half naked and I am forced, FORCED to wander the icy tundra to grab the clothes from the backs of the dead in order to clothe myself.

I have my trusty pickaxe for protection against the antlered menace, but it does little against the cold.

Captain's Log. 17th of Sandstone.
War. War never changes.
The bones litter the ground, piled high in many places.
The bones of the undead.

How many elk had to die, I wonder, to create this army?
I can only attribute such... hideous plotting, to a single source.
The Elves.

I myself have gone to fight. With my sturdy pick I have smashed many to bits, but more keep coming. More always come.
We wall up the tombs of our dead, for fear they will rise again, as the elk clearly have.

Today, I destroyed several who were stomping and gnashing a poor carpenter.
They did not strike the killing blow, but sadly, I was too late.
His wounds, so severe, gave him only a few minutes to tell me what he knew.
"The Elves. The Elk!" he said. It was all he said.
So, it appears the Elves have been playing us for fools. Not again, though. Not ever again!

Next time the Elves appear, we shall expose them for what they are.

Collaborators!

Heh, Kinneus' personality kind of mirrors my own, which is nifty.
Kinneus: 2
Goblins: 0
Bring it on, or has your green belly turned yellow already?

Captain's Log. 20th of Sandstone.
BurnedToast and Xotes had a meeting with me today, in between battles.
It appears they are worried about a head injury I have sustained.
I told them it was nothing to worry about.
But I did not tell them my suspicions.

I did not tell them that I suspect them of being collaborators!

I am watching them. Nobody will end my fortress! NOBODY!!!!!

BurnedToast's Log. 20th of Sandstone.
The Captain appears to be going increasingly off the deep end.
Xotes and I met with him today, and although he says he is fine, he is clearly becoming increasingly delusional.
He has stolen armour recovered from the dead, and now fights the skeletal elk, by himself. With his pick.

I don't know how this will turn out, but I fear it will be for the worst.

Already he has told me to begin preparations for arena matches. I don't like the way this is going.

BurnedToast's Log. 2nd of Timber.
The Captain, having strolled in from a session fighting the local fauna, demanded we make for him three items of black bronze. He doesn't seem to care what is made, just that it be black bronze.

I tried telling him we don't have any bronze whatsoever.
He didn't listen. He's becoming more delusional by the day.
Unfortunately, he's also becoming a better fighter by the day. I can't think of anyone I'd like to tangle with less, now. Even the seasoned fighters in the military seem afraid of him.

Just today, I received a report from the squad I sent out to deal with an Elken intrusion into our area.
It seems that as they were approaching the menace, he ran past them, and utterly annihilated all the Elks before the squad could even react.
