Such cruel, amusing, horrible fates befalling all my chosen dwarves.
Lets try this again, then, if you'll permit it...

I'll have to go with Silleh, an Engraver/Mason/Architecht, who insists on building a spiral stairwell with the help of whoever has a pick, as the central hub of the fortress, that all other area's branch off from.

Something along the lines of one of these designs, that would of course rotate/be mirrored with every floor that they descend, to keep them "flowing"

code:

###########   #######   #######
#####>#####   #>>####   #+++++#
###++>#####   #++####   #+<#++#
##+++######   #+++###   #+###+#
##++#######   ##+++<#   #++#>+#
#+++#######   ###++<#   #+++++#
##++#######   #######   #######
##+++######
###++<#####
#####<#####
###########

###  ##
#>>   #
#++
#+++
##+++<#
###++<#
#######

I know, rather simple designs, but feel free to pick one if you think it'd work, and use it as a point for expansion to branch off from. of course, my dwarf'll insist on smoothing it all out. the last one, may be something of a pain to set up however, as it'd require a pillar in the center, and the stairwell spiralling down around it, disconnected at all points from the pillar. of course, if they ever survive long enough to reach legendary, they'll insist on detailing the floors of the stairwell, alone.

The last one is most insane. Therefore it is in!

Captain's Log. 3rd of Sandstone.
After we'd finished looting the goblins corpses, I returned to my office to find Metalax waiting with a dwarf I had not seen much of.
A quick reminder from Metalax brought his profile to mind.

There were lots of recent updates as to his wellbeing. Clearly BurnedToast had been filling in some time, updating the personality profiles.

In any case, they had an idea.
A completely insane idea.

They planned to build a gargantuan stairwell, straight to the lowest depths achievable in this area. It would be immense, and put even the mountainhomes to shame, they said.

This last statement gained it my seal of approval, and I set them to work. We needed the stone anyway.

Captain's Log. 12th of Moonstone.
The miners of the great stairwell were down there an awful long time.
Even I swung my pick a bit, for old times sake.

But none spent more time down there than my old friend Metalax.

It seems the deeper we dig, the worse our doom.

Metalax has foregone drink and food, instead he now salivates after the small vermin roaming the crevices in the fortress.
I tried showing him some of the finely prepared meals in our larder, but he seemed vacant somehow. I drew him a picture of a rodent, and instantly he became a salivating mess.
Literally, it was dripping all down his top, which, by the way, is in tatters.

He's currently, ironically, hunting for vermin in the larder of all places.
I hold out little hope for my old friend.
Tonight I drink to forget him!

Captain's Log. 19th of Moonstone.
Today is a bittersweet day. We buried dear old Metalax, and during the funeral, our fish dissector gave birth to a bouncing baby boy.
During the funeral.

In any case, this marks our first child, actually born, in Nist Akath.
Surely the gods must hate our children.

I'm not even sure who the father is. I am reasonably certain it isn't me.
At any rate, I hope it isn't me.

I am drunk a lot of the time.

I think I need to go have a conversation.

That's just priceless right there. XD

Captain's Log. 26th of Opal.
It seems like every time I pick up this pen these days, it's bad news.
Silleh, the mason with the big ideas, died today.

He passed away amidst the empty beer barrels in the larder.
The coroner says he died of thirst.
I think he died of sorrow.

I can't help but notice, that both he and Metalax, the planners of the stairwell, are dead now. This is somewhat disturbing, as I've spent a fair amount of time down there myself.

In any case, my own pet project is very nearly complete. And then I'll be spending far less time in the depths. Of this I am certain.

haha, i must have some of the shortest lived dwarves. i was expecting to die before Metalax, personally though. Ah well, back to watching the story while i ponder an architechtural monstrosity of some form to possibly unleash upon the fort.

Captain's Log. 25th of Obsidian.
As we near the end of winter, at last, another of my craftsdwarves, one whom I have previously paid no attention, began acting strangely.

He dashed from the crafts workshop he was working in, and seized control of an entirely different crafts workshop, possibly to be closer to the materials he needed?

I don't pretend to understand the insane.
He grabbed some magnetite and marble and set to work.

Captain's Log. 1st of Granite.
Spring, at last. My special project is not yet complete. I owe this to the annoying lack of masons who don't end up sealing themselves inside the tombs of their fallen friends.

In any case, that craftsdwarf is still working on those two bits of stone.
I don't know what could be taking so long.

Amendment:
Just as I wrote that down, he finished it. It's some sort of idol.
It has a picture of some elves speaking with dwarves. Again, it's a picture of me.
I don't know why they're always of me talking with them, and never of me mercilessly butchering them, or stealing their items.
Surely that would be a better image to preserve for prosperity.
He named it "Shootworth the Twist-whip of Constructs."
I told him it was a bit of a mouthful, and suggested "Glorious Leader and the Elvish Bastards".
Then he just yelled his version of the name at me. Repeatedly.
I feel a little deaf.

Captain's Log. 12th of Granite.
Elves. They return.
This time, they are greeted by my nearly complete catapult tower, from which I may take aim at any within range!!!!!

Surely this imposing tower will make them think twice about any treachery.
We shall have to see what they want to trade to us, however.

Captain's Log. 16th of Granite.
The Elves are still here, but we've shut up shop. They're trapped with us until we can deal with a new problem.
Goblins.

They just arrived, and in force. We'll be firing upon them as best we are able.
We'll drive the green scourge off once more!

Captain's Log. 16th of Hematite.
After what seems forever, the Goblins finally depart.
Everyone's a winner!
Except of course the Goblins.
By the end, there was enough catapult rocks in and around the goblin encampment for them to build a sturdy fort out of.
I don't know why they didn't. Perhaps they relish the chance to try to dodge a giant flying rock?

Captain's Log. 12th of Limestone.
We are utilizing the Goblins disappearance to further entrench our position, though we are constantly plagued by the antlered menace.
So far we have lost a handful of dwarves to them in the process of entrenching and looting bodies.

Today, however, the dwarven traders came.
I can't wait to see what they have to offer.

Captain's Log. 23rd of Limestone.
Today we had our second birth. To the same fish dissector.
While she was holding her other infant.

I'm definitely sure this one isn't mine.

Captains Log. 24th of Granite.
The Elves traded with us today. We were haggling right up to the point where the one called Queca told me to stuff my offer up my bearded behind.
Then he said he was leaving.

To cut a long story short, they left with a lot less than they came with.
On the bright side, we got a bunch more stuff. Sadly it's mostly just cloth, but hey, we can use that.
