6th Sandstone

A snatcher.  Discovered far away from our camp.  It ran off before we could kill it.  I hope he brings back friends.  I thirst for goblin blood.

17th Sandstone

One of our miners has been struck by the fey spirits of this forest.  She has claimed a mason’s workshop.  I wonder what she will produce.

I am excited, for the miner has taken copper nuggets and obsidian.

22nd Sandstone

Haha!  Our dear Mebzuth has created an Obsidian Throne!  What perfect symbol for my rise to power here.  The fey spirits have even granted Mebzuth adept skill at mining for her trouble.

I’ve ordered our farming area roofed to prevent snipers from destroying our workers.  We will fortify this forest, or my name is not General Babkadol

25th Sandstone

Once again, a snatcher.  He will be destroyed…and indeed he was from the combined force of my hands, our dog’s jaws, and a timely crossbow bolt.

2nd Timber

We now have a growing groundhog population.  Might I add…tame groundhogs.

27th Timber

The child has thrown yet another party at our table.  Quite a strange child this one.

I’ve ordered the throne artifact installed in my study.  I’ve been told it’s official name is Stalkedtrades the Soot of Competing.  It is an obsidian throne that menaces with spikes of native copper and obsidian.  While spikey, it will serve as an awesome seat of power.

13th Moonstone

We have massive reserves of plump helmets now, and all we need is barrels to brew them.  Otherwise our projects are advancing with all speed.

18th Moonstone

Another snatcher…but this one is trapped in our cages.  I think I will keep this one, and prepare a fine arena for it.  Traitors must be tested.

20th Moonstone

The arena has been laid down.  With any luck, our first event will occur soon.

22nd Moonstone

Ambush.  7 goblins.  All dwarves will arm themselves and destroy this menace.  We are at war!

A puppy has been killed. We are mobilizing.

We have lost a wrestler to the goblin menace.  Rest well in the halls above, Zefon

24th Moonstone

I am personally leading this charge. We must destroy this goblin menace.

The first is down with a single mighty blow from my hammer.  It has a severe head wound, but is alive.

We have lost a war dog, but I have had vengeance on two goblins, both propelled away by my mighty hand.  5 are left alive, 4 are still in this battle.   They may all be dead before reinforcements arrive, but I seem to have them all well contained.

1 more struck down by my hand.  A war dog is chewing on another.  As it dies, the remaining two mobile goblins start to flee, our dogs on their heels, with me close behind.

25th Moonstone

My final report.  Casualties: 1 puppy, 1 war dog, and Zefon.  Kills: 2 by the war dog Astennuzgob “GravelGalley” and 4 by myself.  Reinforcements arrived to see me standing over a bloody battlefield.  While Gravelgalley is injured, I have come out of the scrape unhurt.  However, Zefon must still be buried within our halls.

27th Moostone

I’ve ordered all goblin equipment melted down for use to make dwarven arms.

1st Opal

Damn their wicked ways.  Seven more goblins have sprung from ambush, while everyone was gathering the remnants of their companions.  The woodcutter, Lokum, was nearly taken by their surprise.  To war!

As we mobilize, Lokum already has one dead.  Good work for a raw recruit.

He has killed the three that tried to kill him, while only suffering a small wound to his arm.  There are still four to kill, and we will meet them on the bloody field of battle.

2nd Opal

Battle Summary: I owe Lokum a drink.

After single-handedly slaying six goblins, being knocked unconscious, and then getting up and embedding an axe in the back of the seventh, Lokum has become a permanent axe-dwarf.  I want no warrior less skilled in the standing guard of our fortress.   Things have returned to normal, Barring any more attacks that is.

16th Opal

Kobold thief!  Where there’s one, there are more.  This one was killed quickly by Zuntir.

23rd Opal

Another thief.    He was brought down by crossbow bolts, but a goblin snatcher appeared out of nowhere right afterwards.  A war dog brought down the goblin.

3rd Obsidian

The first baby born here has grown to be a child.

21st Obsidian

The goblin thief that was to be our first arena victim escaped today.  Luckily he escaped into the blades of an obsidian death trap.

6th Granite

I’m worried.  No new migrants have come.  We need more troops to support our army.  I’m preparing a special welcome for the elves that are sure to show up soon.  A welcome that involves a dozen armed dwarves and us taking their goods.

12th Granite

A kitten has been shot and killed…by Istrian and his ballista.

As if it was an omen, the elves are here.

14th Granite

We caught another snatcher.  Looks like our arena will be populated after all.

19th Granite

The elves were kind enough to bring us a black bear.  How nice of them.  War Bears will make a fine addition to our defenses if we can find a mate for it.

5th Slate

Another kobold trying to steal our goods. Beastmaster’s animals have destroyed the beast.

25th Slate

Ignaz has become a legendary champion.  Her name is spoken throughout the kingdom, and the King is very jealous I have her.

5th Felsite

Taking inventory of our animal stocks reveals we have over 100 livestock of various shapes and sizes.  Of those, 45 are trained to be working animals, the remainder are mostly young, and not yet ready to eat.  We’ll have a feast soon, as they are cluttering up the place.

7th Felsite

Migrants, finally.  Here’s the full list of the new recruits
Male Carpenter
Female cow calf
Male Macedwarf
Female horse foal
Male Mason/Engraver

22 In all.  I’ve elected that Flokstein, being our bookkeeper anyway, handle the administrative tasks as mayor.  The recruits are going into basic training and are going to be a standing army from now on.

(Some are claimed, others aren’t.  If anyone wants to claim a migrant, post your desired name, skill and gender.  The macedwarf is already spoken for.  I’ll be posting skill updates tomorrow.  It’s time for bed,)

9th Felsite

I’ve organized a fortress guard built around the new recruits.  It’s far easier to teach new recruits the necessary parts of guarding this place than take useful dwarves off of their jobs.  I’ve also promoted Istrian to Captain of the Guard.  I made a small error in my last log, Flokstein is indeed Mayor, but it is Donnigan who has been keeping our books up to date and dealing with trading.  Flokstein has mandated that we export no iron goods, which I agree wholeheartedly with.  I’m also laying down plans for an obsidian wall to surround our entrance and serve as a castle wall.  I will build a keep and castle, complete with drawbridge, even though we live underground.

Of the new recruits, a few have merit.  One, a macedwarf named Blackhelm, was eager to get into training.  A little too eager, I’m afraid.  I’ll have to watch him.  Among the recruits is also Maggarg, who is eyeing our obsidian swords with glee.  I’ll have to keep an eye out for him as well.

Great, wall in and drawbridge! I think I am suiciding in this fortress. Walling yourself in and using drawbridge is so lame.

Fine, no walls, how about some more towers though?  Elevated firing platforms for marksdwarves/siege engines (but ones that are accessible so they aren't impenetrable.  Goblins will be able to get to the marksdwarves, but not before coming under fire).  That better for you?

And I'll remove all weapon-based traps, leaving only some cages for catching animals and the occasionaly goblin for arena purposes.

I always find that having a long entryway outdoors that has a big overwatch area one level above it with fortifications and marksdwarves is a great way to play. The marksdwarves will take out pretty much any small group of invaders that come close, but large invasions still cause some serious problems, which is always fun.

In my most recent fortress I would put a whole bunch of wardogs into a cage, and set that cage to a pressure plate. When the goblins get into the entry area and are getting shot at by marksdwarves, they will hit the pressure plates and WHOOM, suddenly there are wardogs right next to them in the kill zone.

It is a bloody massacare. Though with bigger groups in seiges, the invaders often make it into the entryway and have a mighty brawl with my wrestlers (thats right baby, no weapons for these badasses).

At the moment, the small 8 goblin ambushes are easily being taken out by 1 of our trained soldiers.  The General in one instance and a woodcutter in the other.

Now we'll have problems when the bowgoblins show up, but we also have 4000000000 animals, half of which are war animals.  We could use another bear, though.  I want war bears.

Dude... seriously. War bears. I am all about bears. I humbly request several war bears for my squad. I want to come over the top of the hill, like the Rohiron in LoTR, with their 4000 cavalary, to save helms deep. Except it will be BEARS! I don't want any other Dwarfs in my squad, just WARBEARS!

Thats actually not a half bad idea for a arena. Instead of surrounding the arena with a pit, surround it with a moat filled with Carp. You could put some stairs in so once they get dragged in they could fight their way out. Would be a hoot to watch I bet.

17th Felsite

Our recruits are training, and I’ve ordered Ignaz and Flokstein’s quarters brought up to the condition they should be in for Captain and Mayor respectively.

19th Felsite

A kobold.  That filth will not take our goods.

24th Felsite

The mayor has mandated nickel items be made.  That would be great if we had nickel bars or ore.

5th Hematite

Power goes to their heads quickly.  Both Flokstein and Ignaz are demanding better quarters.  Ha!  I’ll order them smoothed, but that’s about all they’ll get out of our already strained manpower.  I still have to create 22 new bedrooms.

14th Hematite

Humans.  At last, they’ve come.  It’s time to make them see that we dwarves mean business, and our business is war.

17th Hematite

These humans are interested in the goblins’s clothes.  Ha!   What imbeciles these traders are.  We could just sieze their goods, but I’d rather get rid of the stinking goblin cloth.  We can always sieze their goods when they send more and more wagons.

27th Hematite

The troops aren’t happy with Flokstein’s mismanagement.  They’ve demanded I appoint Libash, a hunter and marksdwarf.  Which is perfect, considering I just finished Flokstein’s quarters.

28th Hematite
Libash has made a mandate I can get onboard with: Gauntlets.  I will have them made.

3rd Malachite

Because of my carelessness when creating the arena, our brave war dog GravelGalley, slayer of goblins, has been seriously injured.  I’ve asked Beastmaster to take care of him.

8th Malachite

Snoopicus was caught in a cave-in.  He is seriously injured, including internal injuries to his spleen and kidneys.  As long as someone takes care of him, he should pull through.

15th Malachite

A recruit has died of thirst.  No doubt from careless oversight.  With all the recruits wrestling and stabbing one another, it’s no surprise.

18th Malachite

Our mayor has mandated that no gauntlets be exported.  Last time I checked, all gauntlets were being worn by the military…sometimes power makes lesser dwarves insane.

1st Galenta

The second infant born to this fortress is now a child.

15th Galenta

Another training injury.  A young dwarf recruit was crushed to death in wrestling practice.  What a waste.

26th Galenta

Another guard has died from training accidents.  This is not sitting well with me.  There must be treachery afoot.

26th Galenta

I’ve discovered who this traitor is.  Apparently instead of giving the recruits water, Beastmaster has been slipping the recruits poison.  She will have to plead before Armok soon.
