General, I think that using the death trap isn't fair. Why do we have to kill them? (I dislike usin traps, it is too easy...)

After taking your thoughts into consideration, here's my decision.

Three of the migrants will become our cooking staff.  One is already a butcher and another a cook, so one of the peasants will become a brewer.  Until the rest are trained, these three will not undergo basic.

1 peasant will become our official farmer, and will undergo basic at a later time.

8 of the remaining migrants will be thrust into basic with swords and shields.

5 of the remaining migrants will be given hunting tasks crossbows, as a future marksdwarf squad.  I would have them train on a target, but that seems wasteful.

The remaining 5 will undergo basic with the cooking staff at a later date.  For now, they will undergo a different kind of training...with a pick.  Hopefully we recover or make some different weapons by then, so we can have more than swordsdwarves.

The human caravan is on its way soon, and the death trap is ready for them.  We've even begun expanding it down several more floors, as the elves survived the last drop.

Oh, and beastmaster, I just fixed my code so that we can have war horses.  Let the goblins come.

Dismissed.

I'm not too disappointed one didn't show up yet. I rarely get a real soldier in the first wave at my forts.

One suggestion, though, would be to take the armorer and metalsmiths that came in and make them your miners. You'll need people to arm and armor your troops anyway,  and this way they train stats without worrying about them dying in a sparring accident.

That is a good idea, but unfortunately one of the rules I'm playing with requires every dwarf to gain military skills up to the no adjective level.  If this were a smaller wave, everyone would be in basic, but to feed them I have to do two waves of training.

Wooden shields will help, and I am going to put the metalsmiths in the second batch of training, so that I can use them to mine and hopefully gain some toughness before training militarily.

I just hope next year I don't get another 30+ dwarves.  10 would be nice, not 30.

Sir, why do we have to give our hunters weapons? I say they cannot be trusted yet. They might be spies, for all we know. We should let them hunt bare-handed to have them prove their worth.

I have my own spies, Istrian.  None of the hunters I have sent our are spies, or at least haven't done anything suspicious yet.  But a show of power may be in place to ensure this massive lot doesn't think I am soft.

(For sheer hilarity and fun, I'm going to assign each dwarf but myself a number, and roll on a random number generator.  Then I'll build an obsidian tower and whatever number comes up is a "Traitor" who will be summarily executed.  I may also occasionally execute imprisoned dwarves just because I'm going slowly crazy!  Don't worry, executions will only be held once a year or so, or after some really misfortunate event)

9 Felsite

With our labor shortage resolved, I’ve ordered Beastmaster to train every animal we have to be able to defend our fort.  She took a special glee in that and rushed off, with a dog over her shoulders.  Oh well, she’s deserved this.

Our training regiment has begun.  Crossbows are being made for our new marksdwarves and bolts are being mass produced.  By the times the elves get annoyed enough to siege us, we will be ready for them.

14th Felsite

Our recruits are training in wrestling, under the guidance of Snoopicus, and their shields and swords are under production now.  Our hunters are being issued their crossbows and bolts, and all is going well.

19th Felsite

Rhesus Maques are back.  Maybe we can trap a few and get some trained defenders out of them.

When checking our existing cages, I’ve found we already have one.  I’ve ordered Beastmaster to train it.

1st Hematite
Our recruits have finished their first round of basic training, and now will slowly be moved up into weapons training, once we have enough shields to go around.

3rd Hematite

Two words: War horses!

6th Hematite

More War Horses!  And for the first time, we’re actually done with a mining project before I’ve planned out the next.  I must thank the king for the massive amounts of labor he’s given me.

10th Hematite

Well our quartermaster is becoming better and better at managing the books, and my grand office is finally complete.  I’ll need it smoothed and decorated, but for now, it’s good enough.

Istrian has brought to me concern about the new recruits.  There is fear that there may be a spy and saboteur among them.  I’ll look into this, and while I hope there are none, there is also a good chance that there is.  I have ordered construction of a “guard” tower.  The others will not know it’s true purpose unless a true saboteur is found.

13th Hematite

The new designs for the recruit bedrooms and obsidian tower are ready.  Now I just need to direct the manpower to actually build them.  Beastmaster has trained several more war horses, and I am pleased with the results.  The marksdwarves-in-training are bringing in plenty of meat, and the butcher can hardly keep up.  We also have a tanner in full swing, and things are looking up.  I hope the humans come soon.

23rd Hematite

Kobolds…I knew we weren’t safe from them forever.  They’ve stolen some paltry wooden bolts, but it is still not tolerable!  I’ve ordered traps placed around the entrance to our deathtrap so our spoils of war are protected until they can be moved indoors.

27th Hematite

One of those migrants has gone crazy.  Snoopicus says he’s seen it before…that sometimes Armok sends his servants grand visions of amazing things, and they go mad trying to remake what they saw in their visions.  Hopefully it’s something useful.  At the moment, he’s just sulking around muttering to himself.

(Note: This is a possession, so who knows?)

13th Malachite

Damn…We’ve tried every kind of workshop to coax our possessed friend into his construction and he’s denied each one.  He just sits there, rambling on.  We need an anvil…he very well could want to make an epic weapon!  We cannot loose this opportunity.

19th Malachite

Our soldiers have been ordered to train with swords and shields.  The marksdwarf training is going well, and this round of basic should end within the next few months.
I worry about our metalsmith…there’s not an anvil here and I doubt the caravan will bring one.  The humans should arrive soon.

2nd Galenta
No humans yet, and that greatly surprises me.  We found the remains of the elf’s camel on the road when looking for the humans, though.  The meat was still somewhat good, so we butchered it.  I’m thinking about ordering some of our horses butchered as we have a good many.  I’m not sure how Beastmaster would react to it though.

7th Galenta

Our first major injury since Baradus.  One of our future swordsdwarves received a bad cut and has been ordered to bed.  Hopefully he will mend in time.

10th Galenta

Beastmaster has made the monster even more bloodthirsty.  War Rhesus Maques!

13th Galenta
As we’ve feared, the metalsmith has gone insane.  He’s refused to eat or drink anything, and refuses to do any work.  The demons drove him mad at last.

1st Limestone

Autumn has come, and our wounded soldier has healed.  Good, because I can’t afford to loose any trained dwarves.

7th Limestone
To help boost everyone’s mood, Beastmaster has thrown a party.  Although it seems only her and her animals are crammed into the statue garden, it’s good to see someone in good cheer.

12th Limestone
The merchants are here.  Like the elves they’ve refused to use the road we’ve provided, but at least they’ve brought their wagons.

14th Limestone
TREACHERY!  The King has sent the gear I requested for our troops, but we have to pay for it!  We were his army!  No more!  I sever ties today!

17th Limestone
I woke up today with no memory of the events of the last few days.  Apparently I ordered the death trap sprung on the dwarven caravan.  I was in a frenzy.  Hopefully this will go down as an accident, as I don’t know why I ordered the trap sprung, but I know that I did.

4th Sandstone

Our metalworking friend has finally killed himself.  He will be entombed in our central hall, his coffin as sure as a statue.

7th Sandstone

It is nearing the time that the next batch of recruits must start basic training, and that includes the kitchen staff.  Fortunately, our food reserves are packed with salted meat and our brewery has been working non-stop.

10th Sandstone

The die is cast, and our cooking staff and remaining recruits are undergoing basic training.

14th Sandstone

Our temporary butcher has gone a little crazy and there is a stack of rotting corpses in our butchery.  I’ve ordered all hunters to begin training in target practice instead of hunting to reduce the problems of wasted meat.

22nd Sandstone

Miasma.  The butchery will have to be moved outside, theres just too much rotten meat that seems to pile up there, and naturally this causes our farming efforts to be useless.

27th Sandstone

After this batch of training, we will have to train the original dwarves again, including myself.  We still have one injury from the swordsdwarf training, and things are starting to run smoothly from our transition.  I have so much work to do and so little time.

4th Timber

One of our trainees came under a fey mood.  I hope this ends up better than our last crazy dwarf.  We may have the spare coffins, but I don’t want to fill them.

5th Timber

The good news is that the crazed dwarf has claimed a workshop.  The bad news, if anything happens, we are short a cook.

7th Timber

Our cook has claimed several types of bones and begun a construction.

12th Timber

Our cook has finished the first artifact of our outpost.  Behold  Bobrurmoral Alakotik, the horse bone buckler worth over 6000 coins!  I claim this as my shield.  Zefon is now a legendary worker of bone, and deserving of a place of honor.

1st Moonstone

It has been a boring month.  Not much has happened, we have rebuilt the trade depot and are awaiting elves in the spring.  Beyond that I am preparing traps for our main hallway and considering what weapons to train our recruits with.

9th Moonstone

The second floor of the Obsidian tower is completed.  Things have been running smoothly, so I doubt we will have to use it for it’s intended purpose.

We’ve also run out of booze.  I’ve ordered one of our planters to work solely on brewing.  This is the best choice we have with our brewer in training.

17th Moonstone

Our recruits have finished their training, and all have at least basic combat training.  I’ve ordered the original squad back into training for the time being.  Our skills need to be in top shape.  I will be evaluating their potential as command officers during this training.

27th Moonstone

Training has been going well, and I’ve made some decisions on our military.  Once our officer’s training is complete, I’ve ordered field commendations for the original five that started this outpost with me.  Snoopicus will be promoted to Staff Sergeant and will be second-in-command for this outpost.  Ignaz will be promoted to Corporal and command the first squad.  Istrian will be promoted to Corporal and commissioned to lead the siege engineering corps, once it can be formed.  Beastmaster will lead the Marksdwarf squad as a corporal.  Flokstein will lead third squad as a Corporal.  This leaves second squad with no commander, however, since they are mostly our support staff, I don’t see a reason to even have them drafted, let alone used in a combat situation.  If it comes to it, I will command them.

7th Opal

Our master boneworker has created a horse bone crown that is a marvel to look at.  While nothing compared to the buckler, it is still amazing.  Surely, we should invite the king to see it.

21 Opal

Our officer training is going well, but the marksdwarves have informed me we have no more bolts.  I’ve ordered expanded production in hopes we can meet training demands.

Our bone crafter has created several more masterpiece works.  Truly the fey mood was a gift from Armok.

24 Opal
So many dwarves have gotten trapped while building the obsidian tower that I wonder if it is worth continuing the construction.  We’ve had to rebuild several walls and almost lost one of our craftsdwarfs while trying to rescue her.  We’ve had so much trouble I wonder if it is indeed a conspiracy.

3rd Obsidian

A child has been born to our butcher.

6th Obsidian

Our of our leatherworkers has been possessed.  Hopefully we will get something even more amazing that our artifact shield out of this spiritual interlude.

11th Obsidian

Our mad leatherworker is demanding leather, and we have none on hand. I’ve had to order some of our warhorses slaughtered.  What a waste, but I can’t afford to loose whatever artifact might be created.

18th Obsidian

With two pieces of horse leather, the mysterious work has begun.  Chanting in strange tongues can be heard from the leather shop, and we are all avoiding that area until the spirits are placated.

22nd Obsidian

The artifact is completed…It’s a leather veil.  Ushrir could have just told us she was lonely and needed a man in her life instead of making us kill a perfectly good war horse.   It is worth 3600 coins  and is decorated in rings of horse leather.

1st Granite

Another year has come, and our Obsidian tower has reached the sky.  Well, at least the main stairway has, we are filling out floors and walls as fast as we can.  Our work tools have gone missing and keep being misplaced.  I know there is someone trying to hinder us…and the bolts that I’ve ordered are gone as well.  There is treachery afoot.

10th Granite

Elves have arrived.  If they survive another accident, there will be no doubt their king will send troops.  They must not survive.

13th Granite

Seems like the elves have brought us wood…strange for an elf to bring the thing they say we cannot use to create goods to trade them.  It’s a shame that most of our goods are bone trinkets.  Oh well, we weren’t going to trade with them anyway.

18th Granite

The elves have met their fate.  We found their heads scattered amongst the levels of our death trap.  We’ve taken their cloth and wood, it will make find charcoal.

An informant has come forward to confirm my suspicions about treachery.  I’ve ordered the execution room prepared, even though most of the tower is still under construction.  We shall see to it that this traitor gets what they deserve.

19th Granite

A goblin child snatcher.  To arms!  We will show it the folly of attacking a military outpost alone!

20th Granite

After chasing the goblin for 4 hours, I smashed it’s head in with one powerful blow.  I’m also ordering a war dog stationed at every entrance.

8th Slate

Snoopicus has sustained a bad injury to his chest and upper body.  He should recover, but for now, he’s ordered to rest.

10th Slate

The traitor will be dealt with today.  My informant has finally been willing to speak.  The reason our construction is so slow is the spy, Stodir, the wood burner.  Thinking back, he did get trapped in the tower three times, and had to be retrieved.  Well, he shall get a first rate view of the tower today.

13th Slate
After a failure of the killing mechanism, Stodir’s Execution was a success.  I’m leaving his body to rot in the sun.

(In a rather funny physics experiment, his head landed about 15 ticks after the rest of his body.  The first time, the bridge trap just threw him around the upper room, the second time he flew off and down 15 stories.  It might need tweaking, but the death drop might just be the perfect test of loyalty.)

Also today, Istrian became our first swordmaster.

22nd Slate

Our marksdwarves, except for Beastmaster and Istrian, are done training.  I want those two to have use of the archery range for a while longer before they return to their usual duties.

24th Slate

Since we have so many crafters, I’ve decided to mass produce obsidian swords and line our entryway with traps.  Goblins will think twice before heading down that corridor.

9th Felsite

The trap is set again.  I hope the humans come this year, as they usually have useful goods, as opposed to the elves.

27th Felsite

The Rhesus Maques are breeding in captivity.  This adds to our huge amount of animals.

Snoopicus nearly died today, after being neglected by the dwarves I’d assigned to fetch food and water for our brave warrior.  When I find out who neglected him, They will be punished.

The good news is that Snoopicus has recovered from his wounds and was able to feed and water himself.  However, this is bad news as he knows who was responsible for this oversight.  I will see if he wants them executed or not.

Good news is now everyone has military skills.  Bad news is, Snoopicus gets to decide if another random dwarf dies.

After I get to Legendary Wrestler, can you set me up with a Flail to train? Looking at the stat's, pick's aren't that great for damage, and Flails HURT people. And by people I mean Elves and Humans.

Funny thing, you've been gaining mining skill by sparring...it's strange, so I'll have to remove your pick to get you up to elite wrestling...although you are getting some nice stats.

Do you want me to randomly execute someone, or not?  Cause it's kinda fun to leave the corpses to rot in the sun.

Also: Future plans for this fort include an above-ground castle.  I'm not sure I'll have enough obsidian to build it completely out of obsidian, but I want to, and use the death tower as part of the central battlement/Keep.

It will have a nice place for a catapult, and a moat created by the lovely physics that makes limitless water with no aquifier.  ALthough, I need to set up some pumps before everything dries out.

I think the executions could be fun, and you'd NEVER KNOW WHO WOULD BE NEXT! Add some tension. I'd wait until we are all setup and trained though. You know... once things quiet down a bit and people start getting paranoid for no particular reason.

You could even wait until someone throws up, and then blame it on poison!

Also, an alternative to just straight execution would be to create a gladiatorial arena, and accused persons could prove their innocence by engaging in death matches with creatures that you capture with cage traps (goblins, wild animals, etc.). The rule could be that they would have to survive five rounds in the ring, and each match would be set up so that both sides are relatively evenly matched. I think this option would be way more fun than the straight tower execution.

Though to be fair, you could set up the tower so that whoever is locked up top goes insane before they die of thirst or lack of food, and then watch as they throw themselves off the tower.

If you could mod the game so you could cage trap humans and elves, you could even trap them, and then once they go insane, let them loose in the arena.  ;)
