So i've started a YouTube channel
« on: August 01, 2007, 05:53:00 pm »

http://www.youtube.com/user/Dnaem

So far i have 3 videos up, each one covering the first 5 minutes of every other season (2 videos per game year) Hopefully over time, the collection will grow to encompass every aspect of Dwarf Fortress gameplay (the first seige = '300' spoof) and get the word out about the game.    :D

[Obviously the fun will stop when the new version comes out, for a time at least. Then i'll get back to making videos [on the newer version] once i've changed a sufficient number of pants.]

Watch the first video. He's starting with 7 unskilled peasants and no starting equipment whatsoever (so no pick).

Was the song from the end of the second video from Berserk?

I can just imagine the dwarves with bloody fingernails trying to dig into the cliff face. No pick? Relying on the local food supply to eat? Wooden trade depot?

That's a bit extreme, no?

Well, the videos are excellent. Keep 'em up!

Wow... that's pretty heroic...

Do immigrant miners/wood cutters come with picks/axes?

How are you getting by with only 3 planks of wood to build workshops with? Are you dismantling workshops as you go? I noticed that you had a Butcher's, a Tanner's, and a Kitchen in video 1, but had created items from a Craftsdwarf's Workshop in the second one.

Keep it up, it's very interesting!

Loved the end of part 3, I had a feeling that would happen.

These are nice to show that its not the equipment that matters, but what you do with your dwarves. Though it'd be nice to see a nice regular walkthrough to entice those who haven't played DF to give its complexities a shot. Most people who don't try are either those afraid of ascii or are dumbfounded by the vastness of the learning curve that is DF.

Good idea, putting that on You-tube.

Too bad I don't have Fraps or something, I'd try that out, as well...

It does make me want to try a 'roughing it' game, though.

How did you get them in a format that could be uploaded to YouTube?

Ok, so now I've got to try one of these games.

Wish me luck!

Yes, and yes.

I used AVIcapt to make the initial video, being of course a free avi video-capture program. Unfortunetly, it doesn't record sound. I used the "wmv" codec/compression method. Setting the program to record for 5 minutes results in a 200 meg .avi file.
Then i used windows movie maker to import said .avi and edit it as i need to (using timeline mode to see what i'm doing. storyboard is useless) I also make sure to not import the video as clips, so instead i get one solid segment. Once i've got all the music and crap i want in it, i create the movie using "Other settings" and set it to save under "High Quality video" that's 640x480 pixels.

At first i was apprehensive about using WMM because the preview apparently fucks up video quality, but once the video is actually created, it looks almost as good as the original and is about 1/10th the original's size (200 megs to only 20 megs)

Also, i believe i've screwed myself over by constructing a barrel; i can no longer make a trade depot... and since i did this at the start (to stop dwarves from dying of thirst in winter) i'm effectively boned as far as trader relationships go... So if i end up not getting any immigrants by movie 4/5/6, i'll abandon and reclaim -- which should be easy, considering i havn't dug unto the mountain!

Yeah, I've run into the same issue regarding the barrel.  It really sucks that I'll be forced to go teetotaler until the fall.  Time to start anew, but I don't want to reclaim since that means military, so I'm off to find a new site.  :)

Maybe I'm missing something, but why no crossbows?  It seems like you could've done bows/bolts/quivers well enough with what went into making those totems and decorating them.

Yeah, I've been going the crossbow route.  Kill the mule to make a crossbow, kill the horse and make bolts.  Mule bones are [7] and the horse is [9] so i think the horse gives a few extra bolts.

As a bonus for going without booze the first dwarven caravan arrives with...

YES!  A barrel with some booze in it!  Now I don't have to use up a piece of wood to start up booze production.  That means I get to keep my 3 workshops and less swapping around!
