Unfortunately, preference tags ([METAL_PREF],[GEM_PREF], etc) are in the entity file, not in the creature file. Unless you made dogs a civilization  :p , they won't have preferences. That would probably completely break their pet functions, anyway.

I think he meant preference as in being near crowds or go for walk alone etc...

Two comments based solely on the mod concept:

1.  Each creature type has a population cap.  They won't produce offspring beyond that limit.  Having more dog breeds thus increases the number of war dogs your fortress can have.  Excellent!

2.  Unfortunately, creatures can only breed with other creatures of the same type.  This means different breeds of dog cannot interbreed, contrary to reality.  Bogus!

How do you explain donkeys and horses making mules?

Mules appear by spontaneous generation currently.

So if you leave a piece of sod out, mules will spontaneously generate from it similarly to how flies were thought to spontaneously generate from rotting meat?

This is a fox skull helmet. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It menaces with spikes of fox bone and is encircled with bands of fox leather. This item is haunted by the ghost of Alfador Angrorung the fox.

Clearly I'm talking about the current version of DF, not real life.  See that "Slaves to Armok:  God of Blood;  Chapter II:  Dwarf Fortress" banner at the top of the forum page?  Yeah.

Eh, that came out a little too harsh.  So, uh, wackity smackity doo!
