So what do [SPHERE:XXXXXX] do?

Yeah, do they have some sort of in-game function or just for show? Can you make new ones or are you stuck with pre-made ones? Are they tied with demons or an independent thing?

Also, is there a way to add comments to your mods? (So I can mark which features were added from my mod)

In this version spheres only affect what objects and engravings are in the pits of those demons, possibly has some ignorable small impact on some messages.
In the next version gods will have spheres and thus there will probably be many more.
You can not mod spheres. maybe in the next version if they become more important.

it is easy to make comments in the raws; actually everything that isn't a (valid?) tag is ignored completely, so if you make them outside tags and don't use [ or ] you are safe. I am QUITE sure of this, but there might be exceptions.

Comments are easy. This is an exact copy/paste from matgloss_metal.
code:
temperature values unknown, used copper
also called shakudo or hepatizon depending on the proportions (some have no silver)
got the name from black corinthian bronze, though these proportions are more like regular corinthian bronze/brass
I just wanted the liver-colored one, dropped "corinthian" because it sounds too location/culture specific
value of 11 is the weighted average value of 2copper/1silver/1gold components
[MATGLOSS_METAL:BLACK_BRONZE]
[NAME:black bronze][ADJ:black bronze][COLOR:5:6:0]
[VALUE:11]
[SPEC_HEAT:385]
[MELTING_POINT:11952]
[BOILING_POINT:14611]
