Is a damage of 6 low for a megabeast?
« on: February 22, 2008, 04:45:00 am »

Cause I recall someone saying in the Questingbeast thread that he wasn't all that powerful, but I based his attack strength on the dragon, who's attack had a damage of six. Is there some factor I'm missing when it comes to damage?

Size does matter.

You also have to take speed into account, if you modded it, and some other things in regards to balance. The number is more like base damage, it is subject to multiple multipliers, like size, strength, and unarmed skill.

No, things that go into damage calculation.

No, big modifiers.  Things in the creature profile that have a major effect on damage multiplication, such as speed and size.  Like you just said.

Oddly enough, I can't find any speed or values or such for megabeasts or much else for that matter, suggesting to me that they have the default base speed of 900...

Elves have speed 700 for example.
I learned hard way that 30 piercing damage is definitely an insta-kill while hitting chest/lowerbody/head for the SIZE 7 creature against another SIZE 7 (human), I will try to figure out the critical damage for bigger things.
For now I use 2-10 bludgeon attack for my illithid (size 7) mental lash and it works fine when hitting the head (no insta-death but usual insta-stun, even to giants). For bigger ones maxdamage 8-12 will be cool and really strong. Also notice that damage dealt is very dependant on the target bodypart. For example you can mangle and break arms/legs with multiple hits, or insta-kill with a headshot of the same damage.

Look, to put it simply, all I want is to have my Questingbeast something to contend with. See my thread for details.

Are illithids really working out alright?  I imagine it would be a bit strange having an illithid trying to tentacle-eat your ankle.  There aren't any brains down there.

Also, they're underdark creatures.  Overground that seems...  Strange.

Also, I'm hoping you gave them the [EXTRAVISION] tag?  Just seems reasonable.

Unfortunately, there is no [ATTACKFLAG_SPECIALATTACK_SUCK_BRAINS] for illithids (mind flayers?).  :)

if you want to keep it at size 15 then my suggestions would be:
[DAMBLOCK:20]
[RECKLESS]
[NOBLEED]
increase the damage to 1:15 or something

now if you add these it will certainly be a megabeat, even at size 15

gurra_geban tends to make creatures that are in no way balanced with the current game setup.  He designs his world to use much higher values than normal, and so any creature fro the old way of things would be utterly squished.  I wouldn't recommend altering a creature to his standards, unless you're planning on shaping the rest of the world in a similar manner.
