I remember someone being able to make things like barrels out of glass using a smelter reaction.  Would someone please post it?

Aren't glass barrels possible outright? They're under furniture, I think.

Nope, you can make barrels out of metal at a forge, but not out of glass.

This is untested, but I think something along these lines might work

code:
[REACTION:GLASS_BARREL]
[NAME:make green glass barrel]
[SMELTER]
[REAGENT:1:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:GLASS_GREEN:NO_MATGLOSS]
[PRODUCT:100:2:BARREL:NO_SUBTYPE:GLASS_GREEN:NO_MATGLOSS]
[FUEL]

There's no such thing as a glass bar. You'd have to make a smelter reaction to make glass bars from glass.

Which isn't too bad of an idea.

Oops, that's what I get for being lazy and C+Ping a reaction and editing small bits of it. I also forgot to change the bit that means that 1 'bar' makes 2 barrels. Replace 'BAR' in the above code with 'BLOCKS', and I don't think there's anything I'll have missed this time, is there?

Hm. It seems like a bug.

I mean, you can make tables, doors, coffins, weapon racks, and whatnot out of glass, but not barrels. Vials are too small to count as barrels, I think...

I'd call it an oversight, not a bug.  We can always use more things made out of glass, however...

And yeah, vials are too small for anything useful.  As someone suggested, there really should be fine liquors than can be put into vials instead of barrels.  Might even pave the way for antivenins.

Is the cooked booze issue fixed? I didn't try to make it, but it seems it stacked in the kitchen in too big portions to be carried away.

Man, I searched the forums YESTERDAY for 'vintage' to see if anyone suggested it.

They did, once, a couple years ago.  And it ended up being in a bloat.

Do want, though.  >.>

That could become an economy in and of itself! But it would be better if you needed all the specialized equipment. And some plants that require special conditions to grow and make really good wine. For example, dwarven grapes that would need a certain temperature. Plant your underground vineyard near lava!

In addition to the fortress guard, we'll now have the Tasters' Guild.   ;)

I think that glass barrels should be possible.  I have seen massive glass vats that were made with only 17th century technology, so they are viable.  I have seen, for mining purposes, extremely strong acids being stored in many-gallon glass jugs (though it was a 50+ year old abandoned mine.  Now they use certain plastics.).  Heck, just look at the glass jugs they used to use for those water dispensers tha now people collect to keep coins in...

Well, whether or not they are in the Dwarf Fortress time-frame, they certainly do work through reaction modding:

code:
 reaction_glass

[OBJECT:REACTION]

[REACTION:BARREL_GLASS_GREEN]
[NAME:make green glass barrel]
[SMELTER]
[REAGENT:3:BLOCKS:NO_SUBTYPE:GLASS_GREEN:NO_MATGLOSS]
[PRODUCT:100:1:BARREL:NO_SUBTYPE:GLASS_GREEN:NO_MATGLOSS]
[FUEL]

The bin version works as well:

code:
 [REACTION:BIN_GLASS_GREEN]
[NAME:make green glass bin]
[SMELTER]
[REAGENT:3:BLOCKS:NO_SUBTYPE:GLASS_GREEN:NO_MATGLOSS]
[PRODUCT:100:1:BIN:NO_SUBTYPE:GLASS_GREEN:NO_MATGLOSS]
[FUEL]

I haven't tested the clear glass and the crystal glass versions yet.
However, production of these glass barrels and bins are very slow in the fortress I was testing this in.  I think I would recommend reducing the number of blocks needed.
