Skeletal Shark musings
« on: May 18, 2008, 05:39:00 am »

I haven't seen this before, but perhaps it has been pointed out before.

Sharks, as I understand it, have a cartilaginous 'skeleton' with only the jaw made out of bone.  This would imply - to me - that skeletal sharks are really nothing more than a shark jaw floating through the water (or skittering along the ground, as the case may be) dismembering and disemboweling anything unlucky enough to get in its path.

I don't know if this matters.

Still, I think a school of skeletal sharks would look cool.

What do you guys think?  Do they have a sort of semi-rotted cartilage as a placeholder so that they actually look like skeletons rather than ghost-sharks with a single physical component?

Also, what's the opinion on other non-standard skeletal animals.  Like. . .skeletal Giant Cave Spiders.  Would they in fact be skeletons?  Or would they be. . .GHOSTS!

I figure GCS-skeletons are their exoskeletons. (somewhat unrelated. In a game of dungeons and dragons, I had a ranger who made a nice house out of the exoskeleton of a (fluffy!) gargantuan snow spider. Ever since, there is was a significant increase of spidery encounters, but I refused to take Favoured enemy (vermin) and if I had the chance, I would've elaborated with a dog house and a garden shed.)

So, exoskeletons.. you could punch a hole in it I guess. Or make mecha armor for uh.. vampire goblins!  :D

Undead sharks are swimming around and he's quipping about the realism of what they're made out of.

Fact: they are made out of hate, malice, and teeth. None of which are a good thing to ignore   ;)

Just for the record, I actually do like the idea of floating animated shark jaws of doom.

Watch Out!  Skeletal Megalodon!

Don't forget, they are undead. Thus they gain spite at anything living.

It's not a matter of realism but of common sense.
You could say this way that in fantasy games like this skeletal watermelons are allowed.

So... they'd basically be walking shark spines? With teeth?

Horrifying.

Actually, no.  It's just the teeth.

You see, they cluster together and attack by flinging themselves at potential prey.  If they can manage to do so with enough force, they will stick into the skin and will proceed to twist themselves painfully around in the wound.

Remember the days when everything exept the main bodyparts were missing from skeletons including the spine and fingers/toes?

Verisimilitude, the illusion of reality. I think we can all agree that a game about something as horrifying as little bearded drunks collapsing towns from underneath is close enough to reality without worrying about Skeletal Slugmen and such.

So would a Skeletal Snailman just be a shell rolling around smacking into people?

Vampire watermelons?  No!  You have to watch out for the vampire mutant russet potatoes.

A plausable explanation would be that the cartillage becomes solid like bone. After all, without cartillage, human skeleton would fall apart into individual bones.
