Playable dragons mod
« on: December 19, 2007, 06:17:00 am »

I've been inspired by the transforming dwarves bug, and decided to make megabeasts playable. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to group several creatures under one civ (is there?) so I had to settle on just playable dragons.

Here it is, developed for version 33f, tested with... oh, who am I kidding, I haven't really tested it   :p http://rapidshare.com/files/77654413/drags01a.zip.html

Installing this will replace your dwarven civilization with a civilization of playable dragons (kept as close to original as possible, but had to be somewhat toned down). So, please be reasonable and back up your raws or better yet, play on a separate DF install.

I also tried to include other crazy things, namely:
- hydra traders instead of human traders
- regular human sieges
- dwarven champions attacking as megabeasts

I'm looking forward to your input and criticism.

Edit: this is what I get for submitting too early. The dragons weren't capable of using tools, and therefore doing much else than breathing fire at mountain goats. Fixed now.

They've been uh... slightly tuned up  :D
Hopefully they'll be able to scratch your dragons.

Strange, they shouldn't. Although they may catch each other's clothes on fire with equally dangerous results. I think I'll just remove clothing from their civilization entirely.

Multiple fixes coming soon, but I can't figure out one thing. My dragon babies keep bleeding to death and I can't find out the cause. I tried to watch them constantly, but it happens a while after their birth, so I'm usually distracted by that time.

Any help would be appreciated.

are they flying around? I've seen flying creatures fly up, then fall down. I haven't seen one bleed to death, though.

No, dragons don't fly (not sure about the babies though, but I haven't seen them fly).
Another litter has just died on me and I missed it. It's really difficult to keep track of it when they die all at once.

Edit: I finally got to look at it, but I still don't get it

Is it the freezing environment? But the dragons' homeotherm is lower than dwarves', and they don't seem to have any problem surviving.

My dragons kill each other with fire all the time. Isn't there a way to have them walk around naked? A dragon wearing trousers is just.. wrong.

Here's v0.2, fixing the most annoying things: http://rapidshare.com/files/78219722/drags02.zip.html

I figured out the dying babies thing. It's definitely the environment - dragons just don't have good protection against cold (strange that cold makes you bleed though). I guess I'll leave it in.

Let me know if you get a dwarf champion attack or human baby snatchers. I want to see how these are working out.

If you added [LAYERING:300] or something along those lines they should do ok in the cold.

There is no tag to add to gold so you can make beds out of it is there? Thought that might be appropriate for dragon nobles.

Ah, 'tis a good spot. One of the rare embarkable volcanoes.

Seed 3128203131. You must generate it with version 33f. Not sure about the exact coordinates, but look for a mountain range just at the upper edge of the map. On the southernmost part of that range lies said volcano. Features: frozen river, magma, various metal ores, lots of gems and limestone. There is a chasm and adamantine, but you can't get them together with magma on a 6x6 map.

Not sure, but adding this to reaction_standard.txt should let you make gold beds at a smelter.
code:
[REACTION:GOLD_BEDS]
[NAME:make gold beds]
[SMELTER]
[REAGENT:3:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:GOLD]
[PRODUCT:100:1:BED:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:GOLD]
[FUEL]
