Dwarven Flamethrowers
« on: January 01, 2008, 10:11:00 pm »

I've been mucking about in the raws, trying to make a new ranged weapon for my dwarves. So I was wondering:

*  Can I make a ranged weapon that deals BURN damage?

*  Can I make it "spray" (affect multiple targets)?

*  Can I make it use booze as ammo?

1. Yes.

2. No. That affect is only for dragon's fire-breath so far.

3. No.

Dang, that kind of limits my options then.

So if a dragon's fire breath works like that, then can I create a weapon/creature that can use it?

oh yes, just add the breathefire tag from the dragon entry to any other creature.

Its rather... dangerous though.

So I can't make a weapon that does that?

BURN damage ain't fire. It just makes the attack very painful.

Can you give weapons a fixed temp? Then u could get them to explode on contact or start the dude on fire?

Using HEAT instead of BURN on the weapon's damage should light the target on fire when it hits. Regardless of the weapon's actual temperature.

And fire breathing custom civs work...just be really careful when it comes to your hunters dragging ‼groundhog corpses‼. As fireimmune only makes them think they are immune to fire and magma.  They'll still burn merrily and die.

My fire immune metalsmiths happily waded through my magma channel to get to the forge on the other side. Worked well...they wondered where all that smoke was coming from and why the door suddenly locked though.

Hmm, a bit late to answer... But you can make a weapon like crossbow and call it "flamethrower" and make special ammo for it that is called "fuel" and makes "heat" damage.

Example:

Create a text file in your /raw/objects folder called item_flamethrower.txt which contains

code:

item_flamethrower

[OBJECT:ITEM]

[ITEM_WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_FLAMETHROWER]
[NAME:flamethrower:flamethrowers]
[DAMAGE:70:BLUDGEON]
[WEIGHT:40]
[SKILL:HAMMER]
[RANGED:CROSSBOW:FUEL]
[TWO_HANDED:0]
[MINIMUM_SIZE:5]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:3]

[ITEM_AMMO:ITEM_AMMO_FUEL]
[NAME:unit of fuel:units of fuel]
[CLASS:FUEL]
[DAMAGE:80:HEAT]

Quite a thread necro, but a pretty nice one! Thanks Deon, I'll try this out.

Also don't forget to add to the entity_default.txt to dwarves amongst other weapons:

code:

   [WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_FLAMETHROWER]
      [AMMO:ITEM_AMMO_FUEL]

and you will be able to buy the weapon and ammo from dwarven traders (if you really desire to have it but the caravan don't bring any, you can order the weapon and ammo while commending the meeting with the dwarven liaison.

Did this with gnomefire launchers when I added gnomes into my current project.  I've been trying to test if it does indeed leave a burning corpse.

It's possible to make weapons that have a high temperature and thus burn stuff around them, but to do that you have to make the ammo out of a material that is very heat-resistant and also generates its own heat.  Should work.

Just change the name again...  Dwarven Flamethrower, Gnomefire Launcher, Naphtha Nozzle, they're all the same thing.

Unless you create an animate machine...  Then things get interesting.
