Alternate DF Background Music
« on: May 15, 2008, 03:33:00 am »

Hey,

I've been playing DF for a few months now, and whilst the background music is awesomely fantastic (or fantastically awesome) it does get dull eventually.  So I started listening to albums when I played DF, and more specifically Midlake's album "The Trials of Van Occupanther".  Great album, and I found it was very suited to DF.  Quite mellow tunes, with lyrics that seemed oddly close to a lot of the daily routines of my dwarves.  In particular the song "Roscoe" seems to fit perfectly.  I guess it doesn't fit quite so well when the undead carp start their rampage, but in general...

Anyway, this isn't supposed to be a plug for their album (although it is very good) but I was just wondering if anyone knows of other music that has that particular, uh, Dwarf Fort-ish feel to it.

Your ears can't stand the sound of anything when you haven't slept for 8 days, haven't pissed in one, haven't drank in 6 hours, haven't eaten in 2 days, and have been staring at a 640x800 window all the while.

Other than that, I usually just leave Winamp on shuffle and wonder, 4-5 hours later, why I suddenly have subliminal thoughts telling me to smack a bitch up.

Lord of the Rings OST sets the mood perfectly. Don't forget to blast "The Bridge of Khazad Dum" when your majestic trap death architecture falls down to slaughter the infidels! Or "Into the West" when smoke lifts after a devastating siege. Or just leave it on shuffle and let Winamp decide in its infinite wisdom!  :)

I like to listen to old school video game music.  Especially strategy games like the Super Robot Taisen series, where the music loops very well.

If you're a fan of old school videogame music (or new school or pc) I've always gotten a kick out of gamingfm.com

You should be able to listen by listen link on the left, but their servers just game back up after a downtime with a new location, so those might not be the right ips (not sure).  If not, the new ones should be in the forums.

The main theme is too good to play too often, so I tend to pull up whatever music seems like a good thematic match. Of note...

Once my swordsdwarf was killed while using an artifact sword made of obisidian and encrusted/spiked/detailed/sheathed/bathed/replaced with Emerald. Three guesses what I played then.

Feuer Frei during a particularly protracted brawl by a lava pit. Yes, lots of getting knocked into it.

A whole lot of Rhapsody of Fire. It's over the top enough to work well.

Unfortunately I've yet to have occasion to use 'burn baby burn', but when it arrives, I'll be ready.

For epic feel I like Týr and other epic/viking/folk metal, like Korpiklaani for fast-paced fights.

For peaceful engineering Arcanum soundtrack - chamber music evoking steampunkish memories.

Otherwise some local folk and neofolk.
