Aha, so you admit that they are subcategories, thus re-validating the counterargument! Game over.</STRONG>

Thank your for pointing out my semantic error. You're completely correct: using the wrong word has totally invalidated my original point. Have anything on-topic to add?

Uh, ok. Thanks for contributing your excellent ideas and suggestions to my thread.

So, does anyone else think we need another level of categories to help organize the forum and to prepare for the upcoming release?

I believe the reason there are no layers of subcategories on this forum is simply because it uses moderating time.  The general rule for most things is, "people are stupid."  Having too many categories will confuse too many people and will also result in a few semithinking persons to make replies of, "wrong forum asshole," without actually posting anything useful.

All that said if Toady were to want to go to the effort to produce more categories of seperation then he would have to spend more time moderating.  Right now I think he does little to no moderation as it is rarely needed.  After a large enough amount of his programming time is consumed trying to moderate the forums for all the dumb belongs in another category posts he would realize that he has to have other people do this.  Then he has the problem of trying to decide whom among the userbase is trustworthy of such a responsibility.

Basically, this is likely to never happen and you should probably be glad that the forum is not cluttered with so many different areas.

I think the way things are is fine.  If you can't find an answer in the wiki and don't want to dig through old posts, I'm sure nobody would complain if you just post a new question in the appropriate area.  I do it all the time, and everyone is very friendly.

Remember, this game is in alpha, and there are always new questions coming up.  There's always a decent chance that your question hasn't even been answered yet, so why not just ask it and save yourself some time?  If it has already been extensively covered, someone will point you in the right direction, and if not, people will start trying to help.

In any case, as Toady already pointed out, he can't break the categories down any further with the current system, and I'd have to say that I'd rather have him spend his free time working on the next version than reworking the forums.  (The Z axis, we wants it, it is our preciousssss....)
