Highly doubt he'd be rich. Alpha game + most people (including myself) wouldn't pay the $40-60 for an ASCII game they've never played, and we wouldn't have played it if it wasn't free. Still, the first part of your post is very true. Best game of '07, so far, for me (since I discovered DF earlier this year). Eat that capitalist pigs!, you're products are no longer even worth pirating to eat my HD space  ;).

PS- DF has also taught me that all the worlds problems would be substantially reduced had our parent civilizations never minted more than 4 stacks of coins.

For a comercial product, a demo/full version could be the same game, simply with the demo being time limited.

Sure it won't eliminate a crack/timer hack but it would allow many to get a feel for the game and decide without compromising the design to much. I for instans, buy all games that i feel are worth it. You would have 40$ from me Toady, for a complete version, not counting the money that i will donate after the 26th next month.

We can sacrifice skulls and blood to Toady. It will give him unatural strenght so he can work 24/7, either that or he will work faster to make us stop sending skulls and bottles of blood.
