but crossbow doesn't fit into the lines that the heavy has.  It's a poetic licence used as a single-syllable word like bow gets the message across (of what it is) and rolls off the tounge better.

The above (including bbcode) neatly weighs in at 255 characters. Fallout meets DF

So...  It's a word pronounced "zbow" instead of just a contraction using the symbol "x" to denote the word "cross"?

I doubt they'd mind, it's just a sketch they did for fun.

Also, suicide Spies and Pyros are the bane of my existence. They rush in to kill you, then die themselves...a zero sum game. Only time it ever helps their team is when I'm a medic with an uber waiting. Screw 'em.

Edit: Also, that achievement isn't too hard. It's all about location, and sacrificing team effort for a bit of selfishness. All else fails, find a 2fort server, and build one facing the courtyard, and babysit it.

The Medic achievements, however, are stupid. I 'hacked' to get the weapons, if only because it was some of them were so inane, and required you to be fuck your team over as you ubered a Scout instead of a Demoman, just to get the achievement.

Not sure I know the ones you're talking about...  And I guess I just pick the wrong spots for getting the sentry achievement, seeing as I actually pick spots where there are enemies.  That thing never lasts long enough for enough kills.  I forget if it's ten or fifteen...

I got the Sentry Gunner achievement on 2forts.  Place a turret a near the sewer stairs, just barely looking around the corner towards the front entrance.  Place a dispenser behind it, next to the little barrels, hide in the corner by the sewer entry so people coming up the sewers don't see you. Repair as soon as you see damage.  Good luck.

I am an annoying soldier, I'm in yer base rocketing yer sentries.

I spend most of my time trying to get into locations that the other team won't expect a soldier to be, then start juggling people with rockets until they die.

It's funny, I sneak up on a sniper nest and kill them one at a time without the others paying any attention. Then I cornershot any sentries and engies I can get to until I have half the other team shooting at me and then hunker down in a place with decent cover and go down in a suicidal firefight while the rest of my team goes another way to the objective.

If I can't get behind the lines I'm taking the most heavily defended paths and try to do as much damage as I can to sentries.  Doing that I usually keep the defenders concentrated in a spot that nobody would be able to get past anyway.  More defenders there=less defenders in the lightly defended routes.  I try to cover wounded guys, medics, and flag runners too If I can get the chance.  My worst enemies are spies.

No, they weren't; the achievements are basically only intended for people who create a private server and get a bunch of their friends together with the express purpose of getting the achievements in artificial situations. I got all but two of the original achievements in normal play, and still don't have the seven-friends-on-the-same-team one.

If you really want the Sentry Gunner achievement, do what I did: Find a friend of yours who also has the game and wants the achievement. Find an empty server. Create one engineer on each side. Build sentries. Run into each others' sentries ten times until you get the achievement. If someone else comes on the server, verbally abuse them until they leave. (Actually skip that last part; when it happened to us we just found a different empty server.) Also, teleporters may speed things along--we didn't try it, but it was an idea I had later.

Got the sentry gunner the old fashioned way,as for the medic achievements, yeah they suck.
I'm normally a spy or pyro,it's all about being sneaky and ruining your day while your focusing somewhere else.
Once I was on a server and the enemy team was infested with engies, they built ALL their stuff in the intel room and made the big mistake of leaving the room...
Came in as spy and sapped everything, got about 15 destructions from that incident alone.  :D
Hell I ran off with the intel just to insult them some more.

Heh, I think the only achievements I've got left are "sentry gunner" and "with friends like these".  That last one is particularly tricky seeing as I only have three people on my friends list, and only two of those have TF2 (the third guy is some Netherlander who was playing NoXious one day after having a bit too much to drink and turned into an "I love everybody" drunk.  He has since forgotten who I am).

I got all the time-and-level related bonuses (impenetrable defense, unstoppable offense et.c) when I was playing empty servers to get a feel for the game and the controls.  I didn't even know what achievements were and I was already ranking them up just by going from one end of an empty map to the other end of an empty map.

But firestarter...  That one I most certainly got on my own.  Ahh, I stil remember it...   Two medics, a soldier and some other random folks all crowded into one tiny little room...  Add one pyro and start singing "Burn, baby, burn".  They were packed in too tightly to even run away efficiently if they'd had the presence of mind to do so, which they didn't.  I died, but I got most of them and the push was crushed before it even started.

I know it's in a different topic, but DF Achievements would seriously be pretty awesome. They'd add challenge, usually involve cool stories, and while they wouldn't be the ever elusive "Win" condition DF is lacking, it'd certainly provide a goal and a reward.

I think achievements were a pretty smart idea to begin with, glad to see them catching on.

Wow...  Sorry to bring this back up, but I just recently got back to my TF2 computer.  ValVe added in the medic achievements after the last time I played TF2.  I'd never seen them.

What utter, pointless, absurd rubbish.

Ah yes, the medic achievements...  At least you missed the time when it was impossible to have a good game because every single person on every single server on every team played nothing but medic.

Seriously, I played a game with ELEVEN medics on my team.  With twelve person teams.  EDIT:And no, it was not an achievement server.  Though somebody joining did ask if we were grinding for blast assist.

Oh well, at least I got ubered whenever I asked for it.  Oddly we didn't do too horribly...probably because the other team was in a similar configuration.

The mere fact that they have medic achievements that unlock special new weapons is not utter, pointless, absurd rubbish. The SPECIFIC achievements that they chose, ARE utter, pointless, absurd rubbish.

Seriously, Valve... Ubering a scout? Coordinating three simultaneous ubers? Killing fifty medics with the bonesaw? Half the achievements force you to either play in a bizarre way that's not going to work with the rest of the TEAM (which I might add is a rather large part of the TITLE of the game, TEAM Fortress 2), or get massively lucky, or play on a special map and special server specifically designed with the sole purpose of getting that achievement.

I could understand achievements for playing in pointless, weird ways if it were a single-player game like the other two in the Orange Box: It's fun to carry the little gnome all the way through HL2: Episode 2, and I even got a chuckle out of leaving Chell falling through an infinite loop overnight for the skydiving achievement in Portal. But in a game where your success or failure at achievements depends directly on the cooperation of players both with and opposing you... it gets a little ridiculous.

I see grouping up for achievements on special servers as no more "cheating" than getting 24 friends together to play WoW with you in certain instanced zones. I just find it horribly backwards that you are essentially forced to do so, or otherwise trust to dumb luck to get many of them.
