Wait... Snakemen?
« on: December 02, 2007, 10:24:00 pm »

I was playing my first (reasonably) serious adventure game, and suddenly I got a collapse warning; this was shortly followed by a string of "The snakeman is no longer unconcious" messages. Were they mining out their own fortress, or what? I desperately want to find them, but I have only barely figured out how to steer my character around, let alone actually find something interesting.

EDIT: Also, what the heck is an olmman, and why the heck did my game suddenly start lagging without drawing any extra CPU power?
ALSO EDIT: Just got me first quest. Arrived at "Spinehollows" but now I can't find the bleeding cave. This game reeheeheeheealy needs a mini-map.
EVEN MORE EDIT: Neeto. Just found a cave swallow flapping about and he led me straight to the cave.

Adventure mode is good w/ the world map, but to get the map of the local area it just takes a few extra steps  :p

Olms are a kind of blind, albino cave salamander. Olm men are those except... bigger...

The map generator is imperfect and sometimes it generates tiles unconnected to anything, which instantly collapse. Usually this happens on maps with chasms, magma vents, or underground rivers/pools (which it probably was if you had snakemen).

Olmmen are humanoid versions of Olms which are also in the game. They tend to live in underground rivers/pools.

You can get a sort of minimap by checking the quest menu (Q) then picking sites, then picking zoom on the one you are at. The cave is usually in the middle tile. It's not perfect, but it's better then nothing.

Olms are awesome.
After seeing them on Nick Bakers Weird Creatures I would have modded them in.
Except Toady did it for me.
Yeah.

There is a mini-map if you press tab until it shows up.

I say this every time they're brought up, so I'm gonna say it again. Olms creep me out. The concept of GIANT OLMS makes me want to fill every cave complex on earth with piping hot magma, just to be safe. And OlmMEN? Just no. No reasonably merciful god would allow that.

Funnily enough, I've never seen any of them on any adventurer. Usually just iron men, giant cave spiders, and rat/bat/ant/cave swallowmen. Speaking of iron men, do those seem way too easy to kill to anyone else? I always thought that they should be semi-megabeasts like minotaurs and ettins, since they drop those expensive statues...

They're made of iron! They ought to be incredibly hard to kill.
