Hi!

Usually playing fortress mode, I recently did play adventurer mode, and to be honest, I was very reluctant about throwing (it is simply too big an exploit for my taste). I did give my adventurer novice skill in it during creation, but then never used it, until one incident, which was also a bit bizarre.

When fighting a jaguar, I struck it but did not kill it. Instead, it was thrown backwards, flew over the edge of the slope - and landed on the top of a tree! And as you all know, cats are great at getting onto trees, but they simply can't get down from them. So there I was looking longingly at the jaguar sitting on the top of the tree staring back.

The tree was not directly next to the slope, so I couldn't attack the Jaguar directly.

First, I tried to burn down the tree, but that didn't really work (lots of smoke, but the jaguar remained where it was). So, in despair I gather some rocks from the ground. The first one missed because I didn't target the jaguar directly but its tile because the smoke blocked the LOS. But the second one hit home. It didn't splatter the jaguar, but did throw it down from the tree so we could finish our match.

Come to think of it, it is kind of surprising the jaguar survived the throw (^_^;;

After a prolonged fight with a giant...

quote:
The giant charges at You!
The giant strikes at You but the shot is blocked!
The giant collides with You!
You are knocked over and tumble backward!
The giant strikes at You but the shot is blocked!
You counterstrike!
You bash The giant in the right hand with your Iron mace!
The shot glances away.
The Ninja gives in to pain.
You stand up.
The giant strikes at You but the shot is blocked!
You pick up the loamy sand and put it in your nurse shark leather backpack.
The spinning loamy sand strikes The giant in the upper body!
It is battered!
The giant is having trouble breathing!
The giant's upper spine has been badly sprained!
The giant's 1st right rib has been badly bruised!
The giant's 2nd right rib has been broken!
The giant's 3rd right rib has been badly bruised!
The giant's 4th right rib has been badly bruised!
The giant's 1st left rib has been badly bruised!
The giant's 4th left rib has been badly bruised!
The giant collapses and falls to the ground from over-exertion.

He's been mauling the two of us non-stop for quite a while, and we couldn't get as much as a yellow wound to him. He suffocated after this hit, though not before finishing off the ninja companion and a few minutes after that.

Why do giants have ribs coded into their bodies? No-one else has ribs. I want ribs.

The spinning vomit strikes the goblin drunk in the upper body! It is battered! The goblin drunk's upper spine has been bruised!

Vomit is now my favourite projectile... Projectile vomit... Deadly. :P

EDIT: Wait, this is better...

The spinning vomit strikes the wolf in the head!
It is smashed into the body, an unrecognizable mass!
The wolf is propelled away by the force of the blow!
The wolf has been struck down.

Ninjas aren't in the normal game either, so this is a mod.

Well, the ninja isn't an indication, because you can custom-name any creature you find.

And ribs will be in the next update of the Martial Arts mod. On ALL creatures with bones.

On a similar topic, "Why is archery altogether overpowered".
The (dark elf) character had a rather fitting name, Nithani Nailhail. She was out killing kentaurs (damn buggers had two civs and three cities - in a pocket world), and had a certain degree of success. Many of the kills began with an opening shot akin to these:
quote:
The flying Steel arrow strikes The kentaur in the upper body!
It is pierced!
The kentaur's 1st right rib has been badly pierced!
The kentaur's 3rd right rib has been badly pierced!
The kentaur's 1st left rib has been badly pierced!
The kentaur's 2nd left rib has been pierced!
The kentaur's 3rd left rib has been badly pierced!
The kentaur's 4th left rib has been badly pierced!
The kentaur's right lung has been pierced!
The kentaur's left lung has been pierced!
The kentaur's heart has been pierced!
The kentaur gives in to pain.
The kentaur falls over.

quote:
The flying Steel arrow strikes The kentaur in the upper body!
It is broken!
The kentaur's 3rd right rib has been broken!
The kentaur's 1st left rib has been badly pierced!
The kentaur's 3rd left rib has been badly pierced!
The kentaur's 4th left rib has been broken!
The kentaur's right lung has been pierced!
The kentaur's left lung has been pierced!
The kentaur's heart has been pierced!

Stout this one was, didn't fall until he was dead.

quote:
The flying Iron arrow strikes The Guard in the head!
It is badly pierced!
The Guard's cranial joint has been broken!
The Guard's right eye has been poked out!
The Guard's left pointy ear has been badly pierced!
The Guard's nose has been badly pierced!
The Guard's lower jaw has been badly pierced!
The Iron arrow has lodged firmly in the wound!
The Guard loses hold of the *ŪCopper bowЇ*.
The Guard falls over.

Arrows as a whole are also powerful -
quote:
You stab The kentaur in the upper body with your Iron arrow!
It is badly pierced!
The kentaur's 4th left rib has been badly pierced!
The kentaur's left lung has been pierced!
The kentaur's heart has been pierced!
The Iron arrow has lodged firmly in the wound!
You drop the Iron arrow.
The kentaur gives in to pain.
The kentaur falls over.

I guess there is only one way to offset this power. Very Thick Armor.

quote:
The flying Iron arrow strikes The Guard in the right back hoof!
It is badly pierced!
The flying Iron arrow strikes The Guard in the torso body!
The shot glances away.
The flying Iron arrow strikes The Guard in the left hand!
The shot glances away.
The flying Iron arrow strikes The Guard in the neck!
The shot glances away.
The Guard charges at You!
The Guard strikes at You but the shot is parried!
The Guard collides with You!
You are knocked over!
The Guard bashes You in the left upper leg with his Iron flail!
It is mangled!
You give in to pain.
The Guard bashes You in the head with his Iron flail!
It is battered!
The Guard bashes You in the lower body with his Iron flail!
It is broken!
Your stomach has been badly bruised!
The Guard bashes You in the lower body with his Iron flail!
It explodes in gore!
You are propelled away by the force of the blow!
You slam into an obstacle!
You have been struck down.

Fare thee well in the afterlife, Nithani Nailhail the Radiance of Kings...

I get the impression that ribs aren't doing what you think they should be doing.  They aren't "soaking crits."  I suspect when a body part is hit, every one of its internals are checked for damage.  The game doesn't say "okay, the hit dealt two criticals and we'll randomly select a couple organs to hurt," but instead says "there are internal organs here, so we'll roll a critical hit check on each of them."

Ribs do soak criticals. I've hardly ever got a punctured lung or heart without some of the ribs damaged. Many times only the ribs are damaged, too.

At any rate, whatever the mechanics behind critical strikes, the ribs don't make the creature more vulnerable to them. These examples are probably just an indication of how overpowered archery is.

Hitting every upper body organ in one shot is surprisingly common plus your combat logs here show an awful lot of organ damage.  If, as you say, the vital organs tend to be missed in favor of ribs (i.e. you're not mistaken), then it must be rolling an excessively high number of randomly distributed organ hits (as opposed to giving every organ a saving throw).

Alright, this is surprisingly realistic, but I have found out several things.

The ribs I added do not significantly reduce the chance of an internal organ being hit by piercing damage. Sometimes they do, but that seems random.
When dealing blunt damage, however, I continuously got broken and mangled ribs, but no damage to vitals.
Slashing damage seems to be inbetween. Many times I've had damage to ribs only, but hits to heart/lungs and the ribs at the same time were also common.

Pretty realistic, now that I think of it.  :)
Alright, enough derailing the poor thread.

This didn't happen, but I think it is funny enough to still be posted here.

quote:
The coin strikes the Hobo in the upper body
The heart is badly pierced
The coin is lodged firmly in the wound
The Hobo takes the coin out
The Hobo takes the coin
The Hobo bleeds to death

Guess he really wanted that coin eh??
