Cannot equip looted armor
« on: February 20, 2008, 10:03:00 am »

I just killed a few goblins and after i took leather armor and some other armor pieces i tried equipping them with the W key while i was holding them. But for whatever reason the game refuses to acknowledge that fact i am holding the armor.
It just says "You have nothing to wear"

i know im able to wear earrings i have found but i am at a loss with this.

Goblins usually wear 'narrow' armor which can't be worn by other, bigger races.

Goblin armor is usually too small for dwarves (they should be refered as "narrow" pieces of armors)

By the way, armor sold in human shops are human sized and won't fit a dwarf either (too large)

If you are an elf, the size should be narrow, but I think that elves can't wear leather or metal armors.

Theres "small" as well.

If your a size 7 human it's both too small and too narrow since gobbos are size 6 and are narrow.

Dwarves are size 6 but aren't as thin as goblins meaning they can't wear it either.

And elves are narrow, but are size 7 meaning the armor is too small for them.

I found one more way of getting armor. In short:

Enter town, hire some drunks, find a monster cave.
Enter monster cave, sneak around until the Drunks die, grab their stuff, leave.

They'll drop Rope Reed and leather clothing, plus iron helmet / iron mask.

And, no, I don't usually want my drunken companions to croak, but....  :))

Goblin fortresses are even better, as goblins load up on tons of really-expensive giant cave spider silk stuff.  Plus, it's just fun to waste the buggers.

It took me a while to figure out how to equip stuff too, btw:

Walked into a cave, helped my Drunks beat up an Iron Man, picked up the statue. Saw an unusual white S character. Managed to Shift-T away (both Drunks passed out due to spider toxin on arrival). Then traded the amazingly valuable (but heavy) statue for *Greaves* and <<chain>> and whatnot.

This area may not be optimized for usability yet? :-)

e.g. I found that one can wear two chainmails, but only one set of Greaves.
e.g. you need to take off an item, you can't just replace something
e.g. equipped stuff can show up on the bottom of the list

... which promptly got me confused when I tried to switch from my (Iron Shield) to a well-crafted Iron Shield.

(r)emove the old one? OK now I'm shieldless.
Now maybe (r)remove the new shield from my backpack?

I must've made mistakes somewhere in the process. I wound up wearing no pants, carrying greaves, trousers, a Scimitar and the new Shield in my right hand, and a *rope reed sock* and my old shield in  my left hand. (1)

In the end, I dropped stuff and picked it up again until I once more had most items in the backpack, and the shield in the left hand.
The new Shield is now being held in the left hand, I hope that's all it takes for me to acually use it. (I can't seem to equip a shield using the w key?)

Note: Playing 0.27.173.38a
(downgraded after reading about traders getting killed by traps in 178)

(1) I only really noticed the sock when I started strangling a Leopard with it  :(.

Yea all a shield needs to do is be in your left hand.  Might work in your right hand too but I prefer an implement of death there.

And you can stick yet another layer of platemail or chain on for armor too.  That makes it pretty hard to hurt your upper body.  Yer still vulnerable to arrows and dismsmberment however.

Seems then entire UI for the game requires you to go through multiple button rituals to do simple things, much like the old native american rain dances.

Fun Tip: Your backpack has a limit on how much it can carry.  But if you drop what you want to put in your backpack and make sure that both hands have something in them(multigrasp isn't good enough) then pick the item up again, you'll stuff it in your pack anyway.
