Hold ALT while on the cliffside, trying to walk off. It'll ask "Where do you want to move?" and "Open space' should be an option. Do. You'll fall.

I had a swordsmen just now who fell three Z levels, broke both legs, and then defeated four regular priests and a gobbo high priest before Travelling to safety.

Speaking of lemmings...
code:

The lizardman has fallen into a deep chasm.
The giant toad has fallen into a deep chasm.
The lizardman has fallen into a deep chasm.
The lizardman has fallen into a deep chasm.
The lizardman has fallen into a deep chasm.
You have discovered a large chasm cleft through the mountain.
...
You hack at The batman in the head with your Iron long sword!
The head flies off in a bloody arc!
The batman has been struck down.
...
You hack at The batman in the upper body with your Iron long sword!
It is cloven asunder!
...
The troglodyte attacks You but You jump away!
You have fallen into a deep chasm.

Aw, there's no satisfying smack into the bottom if you fall into a chasm  :(

You can allow or stop your dwarves from eating these mushrooms, but it's entirely optional and doesn't turn Dwarf Fortress into Dwarf hookah-smoking pad.

One time, I got a mortal wound from a sturgeon, my left lung or something, and so I climbed out of the river and travelled, and then.. Fully recovered magically.

And then I decided "I think I'm gonna save and go to bed."

And then in the middle of saving, dwarfort.exe crashed. Didn't survive my mortal wound after all.

The times I've had "MORTAL WOUND" come up, I haven't been able to travel.  Either I can't catch my breath long enough to spell "breathe" or there's some complaint about how I'm some kind of bleeding-heart liberal.
