This.  Other than that, I've had a few bad instances of losing experienced explorers to low height drops so I generally save it for my "Play Now!" guys, or as I call them, base jumpers.

I save scummed my glacier fortress then went in as an adventurer solely to throw myself down the pit of death. The drop happened a little bit too fast for my liking, but it was a worthy end for an adventurer who's only goal in life was to throw himself down a pit of death.

Eh, I was save-scum pissed when I had to throw myself down a 4 z-level cliff to reach a dark fortress and the adventurer body exploded into gore.

(And yes it HAD to be done, when I reloaded and explored the area thoroughly it turned out it was on this weird temperature cusp where the area would flood in daytime and freeze at night and the only other narrow path in was to trek it from a different world map tile.)

That peculiar instance aside, yes, who needs legs when traveling will fix 'em.

"When I grow up, I wanna be a pit of death tester!" Knowing Dwarven society, the boy would of found plenty of work. Sorta. =P

It's more fun to take very long but potentially survivable plunges to see if your character has guts enough to survive. My dwarven wrestler leaped off of a human temple, but uh... missed the pool in the center by a square. >_>

Of course, being a dwarf, he got over it.

I like going to the top of temples, get outnumbered by priests fighting me, then jump into the pool below. 4 floors below.
