Stealing - I assume I am doing it wrong
« on: February 18, 2008, 12:32:00 pm »

So, after reading that Toady fixed the stealing bug, I was all excited to try it out with this new version. Here is a brief tale of my experience, then maybe someone can tell me what I did wrong:

---------------------------------------

I started in an inn (as usual), and the mayor ran over and asked me to kill a giant for him. A drunk jumped up and offered to come along, and so we set off. We decided, since we were doing a favor for the town anyway, that it made sense to borrow some weapons and armor for the task. I waited until nighttime, snuck into the shops, grabbed the gear, and left.

No problem so far, and the only person who saw me was the drunk (not that I think that is being modeled currently). Upon leaving, I tried to travel away (since the update notes said I could, now) and I could not, but I DID get a different message telling me that I just needed to be farther away from town. So I left town (until the minimap disappeared) and tried again. No luck.

I kept moving away, until I hit a cliff wall (about a screen farther). Still no luck. It was a two-story drop, so I knew there would be some damage. I jumped anyway, since I failed to find any other way down. It hurt, and the drunk didn't follow me.

I ran away probably another screen-width or two. I still wasn't allowed to leave with the goods, and I hit another cliff. I was pretty sure this second fall would kill me since I was still wounded from the first, and I couldn't heal by traveling since I had stolen items, so I decided to try resting.

I figured I was fairly safe, since I had to leap off of a cliff to get where I was, and if I was near enough to town that I couldn't leave, it wouldn't be swarming with monsters.

During the night, I was killed by a crossbow bolt. After I cleared away the battle-spam, I saw my killer.

A town guard... who was, apparantly, omniscient and sensed that I had stolen the items in the night, and that I had gone east, and had thrown himself over the same cliff to find me, and then decided, when he came upon my sleeping body, that the punishment for theivery was a crossbow bolt to the head.

He didn't even take back the items I stole. He just murdered me, and left. I have no idea how he got back up the cliff.

----------------------------------------------

So, my first attempt at thievery was a failure. I was wondering if anyone else had any pointers as to how I could pull it off. It doesn't seem like stealing would be all that useful if it means all of the humans auto-agro on you because they all know you're a thief - but I had hoped that making it away would have cleared my deed from their records.

The town guards had heard rumors of the Delton clan's many deeds of thievery and had dead or alive posters posted all across the kingdom.

You have to move FAR away. Not one or two or five screenlengths. You have to move what seems like a full world map tile's distance away from the town. You normally see the direction to the town on the compass. When you're close it shows the direction in bright green. When you're far enough away it's dim green.

Well isn't that kinda the same bug but lessened to the point where at most the clinically insane can accomplish it instead of being impossible?

Gah... Have you even tried to get a couple local map-tiles away without traveling? Takes FOREVER.

You don't just want stealing to be possible, you want to be EASY? The system's broken enough as is, you can travel away from a raging pack of wolves by hiding behind a tree so they don't see you.

You can also get ambushed in the next map tile and land on top of one.  Scared the heck out of me, I wasn't expecting them to start so close.

Ideally, I would want the townspeople to care about property, lock their doors, and have guards on the lookout for people skulking around at night. I assume these features are so far down Toady's bug list as to not even be on the list yet - though.

If the alternative is guards like in Oblivion that automatically know the moment a crime is committed and will hunt you to the ends of the earth even if they never saw you do it, then, yeah, I guess I'd have more fun being allowed to steal a longsword, even if it was a little easy.

I am glad to see that Toady had at least had this bug in mind, but I have to agree with firecrystal. If my character dies of dehydration before traveling the full 100 miles he needs to go to lose the guards, and then can never go back to any human town again without being killed on sight, then stealing has hardly been enabled.

Its kind of like saying you CAN kill the mayor - so long as you never want to do another quest again (since you're KOS in every human town, forever). Even then, when you kill people, I think you can leave town just by moving far enough away to make the minimap disappear. Murderers can escape justice easier than thieves?

I call 'shenanigans'.

You don't get a profit out of murder. Not currently at least, and not unless you're questing for an evil civ. And the distance you need to go is not THAT great. Yeah, it took me some three-four minutes to get away, but I got a bloody great battleaxe out of it, and some armor, too. Losing the guard(s) is less of a problem. Things like infamy and proper crime registering are on the list, but waaaaay down the list.

No profit out of murder???  PAH!  Obviously, you've never strangled a sleeping guard and snagged all his stuff!

For that matter, neither have I...   I do believe it's adventure time again.

More fun to strip all your clothes off (metal armor is fine) and go steal the guard's food barrel. Walk outside near a tree and ignite the tree. Drop the barrel and walk away.

Wait until the meat catches fire the barrel will emit its own smoke now and you can see the !!fox meat!! or whatever by looking at it. Then go and drop the barrel on the sleeping guard. Sleep or wait around for a while and the guard will drop his weapons and die.

Pah, I just strip my clothes off, catch them on fire, and throw my !!thong!! at the sleeping guard. That's what a real man does.
