So I noticed there is a new bugfix version. Great! I deleted my old world to have a fresh slate, set up the new version of DF, generated a world. Things are looking good! This ought to be fun, I think.

Start an adventurer, leave town, go into the nearby Dark Fortress...

Yes, that's my whole announcement log. New world, new adventurer, the first fight I get into and look what happens.

oh psh.  Its just an eye, and look on the bright side, at least you have one more.

My view distance was one square in every direction after that! Goblin children could kill me with ROCKS.

Edit: Oh, creepy. It must be psychological but now my right eye hurts like hell. Just incase I'm staying away from the water...

Well actually you can be killed with a sock even if you have both eyes so I wouldn't worry about it.  Anyway dying frequently in adventure mode is part of the game.

Oh, sure. I've died a GREAT many times, I assure you! But losing my eye from the first attack (to/from anyone) on a BRAND new world is just... ouch. I'd never lost an eye before without already being as good as dead.

I can imagine some adventurer(read medieval hobo) with nothing left to wear walk at the setting sun while the wind is blowing.
Then he walks straight into a city wall and stumbles around until he tries to sneak into the town, but is noticed by a guard.
He tries to punch the guard and escape, but instead he gets his eye slashed out.
