Observer skill in Fortress mode
« on: February 20, 2025, 03:30:38 am »

It's evidently very important in Adventurer mode, but apart from spotting ambushes, avoiding surprise charges, and reducing the likelihood of penalties from flanking attacks, does it have a major influence in combat in Fortress mode? Training it passively for civilians is relatively very easy compared to training dodging, but I'm wondering if the defensive benefits are substantial.

In fortress mode, I have always set up barracks near taverns and temples for that passive observation training, and believe it has influence on seeing other creatures at a distance and on noticing stealthy creatures. There have been many times a dwarf would cancel a job because they have seen a creature but that creature didn't see the dwarf, so the dwarf successfully runs away in fear, calms down, and walks back to be frightened again. I never checked their observation skills, but when the other creature is an undead who would have charged if they saw the dwarf, I can only assume the dwarf's observation range was better than the undead's. I have no idea if it effects combat in fortress mode.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.
