Story: Guardians of the Momentous Realms
« on: February 17, 2025, 08:23:28 am »

Greetings fellow strikers of the Earth!

Since the new Adventure Mode update hit Steam, I've started a new game and have been documenting it as a combination adventure mode/fortress story. The rule is that I can only start a fortress in a location that I've first visited as an adventurer.

So without further adieu, let me introduce...

Guardians of the Momentous Realms

Prolog - The Hidden Paradise

Far across the sea lies the Momentous Realms, a place of mythic beasts, whimsical elves, ambitious humans, scheming goblins, and industrious dwarves. Two major landmasses define this realm, with the larger one (the Land of Pregnancy) embracing the smaller one (the Continent of Gallows) from the west and south. Legends say the larger one birthed the smaller one. Numerous islands surround these two landmasses.

In the northwest portion of the Momentous Realms lies a hidden paradise. Secluded from the rest of the world by the impenetrable Crest of Guarding mountain range, this valley shelters a great many mythical creatures and waters blessed with holy goodness (and one lake cursed with vile evil). The land is rich, nuggets of gold sparkle in the rivers, and beasts both big and small are plentiful. Most of the valley's iron ore, the metal of war, was locked away on an island in the southeast corner of the valley, surrounded by cursed water that tolerated no boat.

It was here that Queen Kogsak Primeplank founded the dwarven kingdom known as the Brushed Glaze, many centuries ago. In the beginning, the beasts of the valley sought to drive away the dwarves. Rocs, dragons, hydras, and many more titanic beasts attacked, and though the dwarved did not win every battle, they earned their place in this forbidden paradise. By the kingdom's 100th birthday, the Brushed Glaze ruled the valley and guarded it from outsiders.

Peace reigned for the next three centuries, until it was shattered in year 439 by a surprise invasion by hordes of undead monstrosities, lead by the dread necromancer Omon Gorgedchasms and his dread army. They killed the dwarf king Eral Spattercudgels and many, many others. One-by-one, the hillocks and fortresses of the Brushed Glaze fell to the walking dead. The mindless yet calculated brutality of these undead soldiers earned them the name "the Mechanical Dimensions".

The new king, Mosus Boatbasins, declared an end to the era of peace and beginning of an era of war. He rallied the dwarves to defend their sacred valley and defeat the necromancers who had despoiled it. But the Brushed Glaze was no match for the Mechanical Dimensions, and with each war against the walking dead they lost even more of their kingdom. After a particularly painful defeat in year 494, king Mosus Boatbasins began to despair. It seemed fate had decided his people would be annihilated and this secret paradise destroyed forever...

A sacred valley, an undead invasion, a dying civilization, a desperate king, and a clueless hero. What could possibly go wrong?

Some typos fixed in Chapter 1

Chapter 2 still in progress...

I just realized that I should add a secret entrance to the fortress so that I can enter in adventure mode if I retire the fortress with the gate up. Is there any risk of leaving a lever outside? I assume the enemy AI isn't smart enough to pull levers to get in, but I don't know if wildlife or other baddies might accidentally pull a lever. I'm open to creative ideas for a secret entrance  ;)

Wildlife can pull levers if it has the [MISCHIEVOUS] tag, which gremlins currently possess.
You could make a kind of combination lock to stop this from happening: Wire some floodgates, levers, and pressure plates to make the gate only open when some levers are flicked and some aren't. It could tie in with the story for a cool puzzle.

More updates: Guardians of the Momentous Realms - Chapter 2

It's time for DWARF SCIENCE! With the cave floor exposed to the sun, will the cave fungus be replaced with grass? Or will it stay fungus? Time will tell.

Also, secret entrance is done. You'll see it in action when I eventually switch back to Adventure Mode :)

More updates: Guardians of the Momentous Realms - Chapter 2

The dorf science experiment results are in: if you expose cave floor to the sun, the fungus is (slowly) replaced with grass.

Now I have a challenge: how to secure cursed caverns that raise corpses as undead?
