Some 50.12 ASCII Newbie Questions
« on: February 13, 2025, 06:31:02 pm »

Hi Dwarven Fellows!
I am quite new to this game (after I have heard about it for years) and begin to enjoy the first steps until first migrants and caravan.
There is a lot of great help out there - in the Wiki and obviously right here in the Forum. I appreciate this very much.
Buch I still dare to ask a few short newbie questions:

1) Building Bridges
Are raising or retracting bridges better for a bit of safety at the entrance floor?
Is if enough (for a bit of security) to channel a few tiles before building the bridge or do I need to remove the ramps as well?
And, most important: How do I control and see (in the building command, at an existing bridge) to which side a raising bridge raises and where the visable wall will be formed when it is up.

2) Barrels and Pots for the Still
Can I reserve some empty barrels and pots directely for the still?

3) Goblets and Mugs for the Tavern
What is the best way to have them available to all the thrirty dwarfs?
Can dwarfs have personal goblets or mugs?

4) Work Menue - Carpenter
I can select dwarves to be miners, woodcutters, hunters, planters, ...
But now can I select a dwarf mainly or only for carpenter work?

Any hints and help would be very much welcome.

I am afraid that more questions might come up.
I will try to find answers myself first of course.

1) A raised bridge will function as a wall, blocking off whatever entrance it's guarding entirely on that z-level - for that reason, it's generally more secure if you're trying to restrict enemies' horizontal movement.

- Ramps will allow creatures to walk out of a 1-deep channel, but not if it's 2 levels or deeper.
- The direction a ramp raises/retracts is determined at construction; you should see a menu for it when you're designating the bridge.

2) You can instruct a still to take pots directly from a dedicated stockpile, though you'll have to make sure it's taking from a food stockpile as well. I'm not sure off-hand of an easy way to designate pots exclusively for brewing; I typically just try to have a lot of barrels and pots available for all the food-related tasks.

3) I believe if you build a chest/coffer/box in the tavern, dwarves will store a certain number of mugs in it based on the settings of the location (as designated in the (z)ones menu.) Not certain though; I've not looked at that system in awhile.

4) There's a little icon by each dwarf in the (u)nits screen that you can click; it determines whether that dwarf will do general labor or just the stuff they're assigned to/skilled at.

I don't know when it got fixed, but you can see the bridge direction and barrel/bin/wheelbarrow assignment UI elements in Classic 51.05.

So you probably want to upgrade to the latest version, saves are compatible, though worlds generated before 51.01 will be missing some adventure mode stuff.

Dear Superdorf! Dear Ziusudra!

Thank you very much for your very promt and very helpful answers.
I think the only issue I still struggle with is the construction of the raising bridges. It is very difficult (for me) to set the construction marks and am afraid that I do not understand the arrows (up, down, left, right, both directions). Which arrows I have to choose if I want to have a raising bridge which ends up in a wall on the right/eastern side when raised and which one I have to choose if I want it to end upas a wall in the upper/northern part?
May be I really should install 51.05 in order to see if I can handle it (better) which that version.
But may be I just missunderstand or miss something.

With the four red-circled buttons, the arrows point to the side of the box that will turn into a wall when the raising drawbridge is closed.
The yellow-circled button turns it into a retracting bridge that will disappear instead of turning into a wall.

If you cannot see the red-circled buttons, you either need to make your game window larger or open the video settings window and increase the "Desired grid height for scaling (default = 64)". I think "80" is a good value for a 1080p display.

Well, I checked and those UI elements are working in 50.12, so updating won't change them. But there's no reason not to update anyway.
