Alright. All players who have sent in a PM with an application are accepted. (Sorry Funk, this basically means everyone except you. Feel free to send in a new application via PM if you want I guess).

For this game, turns with be asynchronous. This means that not all players will take their turn at the same time. You won't actually know which player (or players) took at a turn at any given time, and I might occasionally switch up the order as well. Each time anyone takes a turn, and possibly even if nobody does, there will be a news article in the main thread that you and your faction will have access to.

When you get a PM from me starting with the words "Turn Start", you may take your turn. You do not necessarily need to take your turn immediately though. It may also be possible to get "Mini-updates" if you are just talking with people or something.

Clarbyville Gazette
January 1, 20X5

Top Story: Clarbyville Rings in the New Year with Fireworks and Community Spirit

Despite the lingering snow and icy roads, hundreds of residents gathered at Lake Haven Park last night to celebrate the arrival of 20X5 with a dazzling fireworks display. The event, organized by the Clarbyville Chamber of Commerce, featured live music, food trucks, and a countdown led by Mayor Betty Hargrove.

“This is what makes Clarbyville special,” said Mayor Hargrove. “We may be small, but we know how to come together to welcome a new year.”

The highlight of the evening was a 15-minute fireworks show that lit up the night sky, drawing cheers and applause from the bundled-up crowd. Volunteers handed out free hot cocoa, and local musicians performed holiday classics until the clock struck midnight.

Economic Update: Local Shops Report Strong Holiday Sales

Clarbyville’s downtown merchants are starting the new year on a high note, with several reporting better-than-expected sales during the holiday season. Gino’s Pizzeria, Murphy’s Hardware, and the Dusty Shelf Bookstore all saw increased foot traffic in December, thanks in part to a “Shop Local” campaign spearheaded by the Clarbyville Business Association.

“December was one of our best months ever,” said Sarah Miller, owner of the Dusty Shelf. “People really came out to support small businesses this year.”

The boost is a welcome relief for local shop owners, many of whom faced challenges in recent years. The association plans to expand its campaign in 20X5 to encourage year-round support for the community’s businesses.

Sports: Coyotes Start 20X5 with a Victory

The Clarbyville Coyotes boys’ basketball team kicked off the new year with a decisive 52-39 win against the Timber Falls Trojans in last night’s away game. Senior guard Marcus Evans continued his stellar performance, scoring 18 points and leading the team with five steals.

“Starting the year with a win feels amazing,” said Coach Rita Flanders. “The boys are finding their rhythm, and I couldn’t be prouder.”

The victory brings the Coyotes’ record to 4-6 in the regional league. Their next game will be at home this Friday against the Oak Hollow Owls.

Local Politics: City Council Swears in New Members

Two new members of the Clarbyville City Council took their oaths of office this morning at a small ceremony held at City Hall. Newly elected Councilmembers Anna Morales and Todd Fisher join the seven-member council, promising to bring fresh ideas to local governance.

“I’m excited to get to work,” said Morales, who campaigned on improving public spaces. Fisher, a retired teacher, emphasized his commitment to supporting local schools and families.

The council’s first meeting of 20X5 is scheduled for January 8, where the agenda will include the much-debated stoplight proposal for Maple Street and Elm Road.

Entertainment: New Year’s Concert Wows Clarbyville

Clarbyville residents welcomed the new year in style with a sold-out concert at the Evermore Theater, featuring performances by local favorite The Prairie Notes and special guest singer-songwriter Ellie Dane. The eclectic lineup included folk, country, and a few surprise pop covers, keeping the crowd entertained throughout the evening.

“This was the perfect way to start 20X5,” said attendee Jack Porter. “The music was amazing, and the energy was so positive.”

Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Clarbyville Arts Council, which plans to fund more community events in the coming year.

Happy New Year, Clarbyville! Stay tuned to the Gazette for all your local news in 20X5.

(OOC note:  and I hope it's okay to say this.  This is me speaking as a player only.

I'm really excited about this game and thrilled to see how the first news post was shown.  I love the humor, the feel, and the little subtle stuff I may already notice and surely don't fully understand either way.  Yay yay yay yay go Coyotes go!  I love Clarbyville already.  :-*

I'm also comfortable and interested in the asynchronous turns and other neat details.  Really looking forward to seeing how this all plays out, and it's hard to express how extremely interested I am.  But oh, I am  8)

If this isn't okay to comment on... I apologize and will edit it out.  I hope indicating player enthusiasm.... might help and not harm this subtle and fascinating game.)

I'm going to say that it is perfectly fine to post OOC stuff in the thread. Try to avoid any spoilers though, as you may discover intel that other players don't have.

Are player to player PMs permitted? If no, how would two players wanting to work together go about it?

In my imagining, we may not get to know who is what character for a long time, maybe not until the game's over.

This is all made up, read only OOC into it....

But if I signed up a 6 year old who wants to play basketball, you may have no way to know how to talk to me yet even if you really wanna talk to Imp's character.

The mayor exists, we know that because of the news post.  It could be a player's character or ran by Supernerd.  We could probably try to communicate with the mayor.

The Coyotes probably have an equivalent of a coach.  We dunno who (unless it was discussed privately with the mod) because we haven't been told in public (yet, maybe never).  But we can probably try to communicate with that coach or whatever the equivalent is.

I could tell Supernerd I am telling my parents I want them to tell the mayor I want there to be more basketball stuff for the town and more ways for little kids to start playing and free tickets for everyone.  Or I could even write a 6-year-old level letter myself if that's fun for me and gets me into flow states:

Quote
deer mare

I LUV BESTIBAL it is the BEST SPRT and I WIN it we shud hav MOR BESTIBAL games for us al like MORE HOPS MOPE BALS MORE CORTS and FRE TICTS FOR AL so FAMELS can al go and BIG LOD FIRWURKSSS fur al games and SPESHUL ICCREM for al

LUV BESTIBAL AND YOU
CLARBE

and PM that to Supernerd and describe the red and yellow crayon it was written on paper with and describe the scribbled drawings on the side and all that and how I'm trying to get my parents to mail it to the mayor.

I bet if Supernerd decides two of us should know we're talking explicitly to each other, Supernerd will set that up.  Otherwise I bet it all goes through Supernerd, and if your character/faction/whatever would do something now that's like trying to communicate....

why not?  It may not even be considered an action, if it is I bet Supernerd just delays it until it's part of your next action.

I presume we're all from different dimensions and therefore none of us are the mayor or coach as I presume they both existed prior to the portal.

Clearly the mayor's been replaced by an extradimensional changeling.

Yeah, I'm not making any predictions if any people present are changelings or robots or robots who are changelings.  No bet, and yeah, I don't know if we're ever going to find out.

Although I suspect that when the Green Lizard People tear down the main drag shooting off radioactive fireworks to summon the Gore Beasts of Krall, that it'll be one of the other players involved.

I'm going to discourage players from discussing this game with eachother via PM, though I have no actual way to enforce this.

In the event that two players would have a reason to discuss things such as tactics in detail, I'll arrange something.

Clarbyville Gazette
January 2, 20X5

Immigration Policy Sparks Local Debate

The recent announcement of changes to Dominara’s immigration policy has stirred discussion in Clarbyville, where a small but growing immigrant community contributes to local agriculture and small businesses. The Federal Immigration Reform Act, set to take effect in February, streamlines visa applications but also tightens border enforcement.

Local farmer Clarence Miller voiced his support for the reforms. “The streamlined process means we can hire seasonal workers more efficiently. It’s good for our farms and our workers.”

However, others expressed concerns. Reverend Angela Moore, who runs a local outreach program, said, “We must ensure these policies remain compassionate and fair. Immigration strengthens our community, not weakens it.”

Mayor Hargrove plans to hold a town meeting next week to discuss the new policies and how they might affect Clarbyville.

Police Issue Warning About Pickpockets

Sheriff Tom Henson has issued a warning to Clarbyville residents after a string of pickpocketing incidents were reported over the holiday season. While such crimes are rare in the town, at least six reports of missing wallets and phones have been filed since Christmas Eve.

“These thieves are taking advantage of the busy holiday crowds,” said Sheriff Henson. “We’re asking everyone to remain vigilant, especially in crowded places like the grocery store or downtown shops.”

The sheriff recommends keeping valuables in front pockets, using zippered bags, and staying aware of your surroundings. Authorities are reviewing security footage and ask anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office.

Odd Fashion Trends Emerge in Clarbyville

Clarbyville’s quiet streets are suddenly home to a curious new trend: prairie-core chic. Inspired by 19th-century farmwear, residents—particularly teenagers—have taken to wearing bonnets, embroidered aprons, and high-button boots as a statement of rural pride.

“It’s about embracing where we come from,” said Clara Phelps, a high school junior and self-proclaimed trendsetter. “We’re making the old new again, but with a modern twist.”

Local shopkeepers are divided on the trend. Betty’s Threads has seen a rise in demand for vintage-style dresses and accessories, while Murphy’s Hardware is puzzled by teens repurposing burlap sacks into fashion statements.

Whether this style is a fleeting phase or a lasting movement remains to be seen, but for now, Clarbyville’s streets resemble a living history museum.

The snowstorm reminded us how neighbors come together in tough times. From volunteers shoveling sidewalks to Mary’s Café handing out free coffee, our town showed its heart. Let’s carry that spirit into the year ahead.

Whether it’s lending a hand to someone in need or simply sharing a smile, small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Let’s make 20X5 a year of connection and compassion.

Stay safe, stay warm, and stay kind. Check back tomorrow for more updates from your trusted Clarbyville Gazette!

How does Mafia do it? I think they just say you'll be banned from playing future games for awhile if they find out, if I'm not mistaken. You can definitely have rules that require player integrity. The two thread system of Arms Race only works because of the honor code.

I remember on gamefaqs I once went overkill on trying to make it so players couldn't cheat. I used some kind of code system, it was a nomic I believed. It killed the game pretty fast.

Near as I can tell, mafia here - every mod sets their own rules.  Our most commonly used rule here seems to be that once the game starts, don't talk privately to the other players in the game - that kinda presumes nobody's like in the same household or dating or has some other daily regular interaction that wouldn't work to pause, and guess talk to the mod if that's an issue and get permission or whatever to talk about non-game things.  "Seriously, I gotta ask the other player to pass the mash potatoes at dinner tonight.  We're roommates."

Generally folks here that wanna play mafia don't want to ruin the game.  When we find out who the members of a faction are, generally game ends on the spot, and if it's an accident that's handled gently and we just move on.  Never saw it be intentional.

Mafia on another site - don't talk about the game at all period once it starts.  Uber period, it is a modkill if you are known to.  That is mishandled in my opinion, if you're playing 2+ games at once you can't even say you are or explain something like, "Gonna be EoD for my other game tomorrow, so expect me to not be here until after 6" or whatever - is forbidden and modkill worthy, though maybe the mod waives the kill.

I'm comfortable with however Supernerd handles this game.  I bet since we write history and stuff ourselves, 2+ players could have talked to Supernerd and asked to write a history that entwines.  There might already be group factions, if groups had wanted to do that; some people might already have group chatter with permission if they had wanted it and thought ahead.

It probably doesn't benefit you to be known (Yes, Imp, it does!  One player submitted 'I have power over those who know what my role is!' they planned for this! - I'm making that up, I speak fully OOCly of course).

So, each of our own self-benefits probably means we all want to be secret to some degree until we act otherwise.

If you have means and intention to proclaim yourself, I recommend communicate that to Supernerd.  Maybe 'Ima skywrite across town at high noon in flaming red - 'Mepa protects this town!'' or 'I take out an add in that paper, full back page.  "The Talamaska, we watch, we know, and we were here before the rest of you"' or whatever.

We surely have means to do whatever we wish; I don't think anyone wants to rush and ruin the game (or just their situation) to mess up the infohazard balance.

I expect anyone concerned could share whatever with Supernerd and let him handle it.

Smooth and good play, I predict.  I don't see overkill here, I think we're fine. :)
